Cheap and Easy Tire Rub Fix on a Jeep JL Wrangler or JT Gladiator when Making a Full Turn

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Slightly larger tires on a Jeep JL Wrangler or JT Gladiator can cause minor rubbing of the frame or suspension components when making a full turn. As in, having your steering wheel turned to a full lock. Fortunately, there is a simple fix for it and in this short video, you'll get to see just how easy it is to adjust your steer stops and with nothing more than a 15mm socket and a washer or two.
We hope that you find our Jeep tip to be useful and if you enjoy seeing our Ripley clips, be sure to keep watching till the end!

    Don't have a JL or JT, but a JK, and still love watching this stuff and learned something new. Also, let's not gloss over the way he always presents not just the fix, but what is actually going on to cause the issue AND he goes over other options (wheels, spacers) and then shows us a extreme budget solution. Love this shit.

    Thanks for the tip. The best solution, though, is to get the correct wheels with the correct offset. I hate the idea of increasing my turn radius and maneuverability. Before installing my front stubby bumper. I found slight rubbing between the bumper filler and the larger 35". Filler removed, problem solved. Thanks for the good tips!

  • @wayalife

    @wayalife

    2 жыл бұрын

    These are factory wheels and so they are the correct offset. Installing aftermarket wheels with different offset or less back spacing will move the steering axis inclination and that will adversely affect your scrub radius. They will also move the wheel center line and that will create more leverage and cause your ball joints and unit bearings to wear out prematurely. Clearly, with 35" tires or bigger, there are sacrifices that need to be made to clear components on your Jeep but that doesn't mean they are "correct".

I have the Toyo Open Country AT3's on my 2020 Willys on the factory 17" x 7" Moab wheels and they fit perfectly with no rubbing. Love your videos and really enjoy the Pippi series. Just offering info as I build my Jeep along similar lines. Oh, and for those with the automatic transmission, you'll need to have it re-programmed for the taller tires so it shifts properly. You are lucky your car is so high I have a lowered coupe and i'm trying to diagnose rubbing. To make it even more difficult it only does it when i'm not moving and holding the brake and turning close to or at full lock. I am not sure if it does it while driving because I would never turn that wide while going any significant speed but also it does not make this noise when I put the car in park and turn lock to lock. Only when holding the brake with some weight load on the suspension i'm assuming is causing this issue to present itself.

    I'd prefer not to. From what I have seen, the Mopar lift yields over 3" of actual lift on a 4-door and that means it'd sit even taller on a 2-door. That'd be a bit much for what we're wanting and a lot more would need to be done to keep her riding nice at that height.

    You are correct, not all measure the same and these are a bit bigger. Also, after making this video, we measured both the JL and JK sway bars and found that the JK ones are actually wider at the bend. So, that is a factor as well.

    I have seen jl sport owners with no lift put 315 70 on their stock rim which are 7.5 in wide. Is this safe? I’m looking into 305 65 on the stock rims if safe, otherwise I plan on putting these tires on a 8.5 in wide rim with about 5.25 inches of back space / 15 to 20 positive offset. Will both of these combinations rub? Not as an off roader, just as a daily driver?

  • @wayalife

    I think the bigger question is whether or not the tire shop you use will install them. If they do, you should be fine. If not, THEY will say it's because it's unsafe.
