Cheap and Easy DIY Automated Roller Shades

In this video I show you how I used Rollertrol motors, Insteon I/O links and an ISY 994i home automation controller to create smart home motorized blackout blinds in my home theater. These automated curtains are a great addition to a home theater with windows.
Hope you find this helpful. If you have any questions, please leave them in the comments and I will do my best to respond. Thanks, Tim

I think this is going to be the solution! Thanks for the information so I subscribed. Your home theatre is simply amazing!

    Hey man, a little late to seeing this, but good job. I am a huge fan (and user) of the Insteon system with the ISY 994i. I really like this setup. I do want to automate some roller blinds that I want to install in my living room. I have seen these Rollertrol motors before and I like their simplicity of them. However, their price is what is killing me, $120 a piece and you have 5 windows, whew. Still cool though, really good job at it. Hopefully you were able to get the room completed. And if you don't already, I would suggest to also get a Harmony remote with the hub and you'll be able to program it to the Insteon system (you'll need the 2411R) that'll take things to the next level, I promise.

    Thanks! I like the Insteon stuff too. Their older, pre-dual band stuff wasn't as reliable, but I have had pretty good luck with their newer stuff. I have over 100 devices in my house currently. Yeah, I love the ISY too. It's probably more for advanced users, but it is so powerful and has a great user community. The blinds weren't cheap, but still WAY less expensive than purchasing them. The ones from the big names are crazy expensive. There are tubular motors available on Amazon too, like these amzn.to/2JC2yD7, but I have never tried them. My room is pretty much complete from a construction standpoint. I still need to get all of the final electronics, my seating and my Atmos speakers installed. Using an older projector and receiver right now. Thanks, yeah, I have used Harmony remotes before, they are nice. I'm thinking about using iRule. Any experience with that?

  • @Franklyn7895

    @Franklyn7895

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@smarthomeMASTERY No, I do not have any experience with iRule. I see what it can do, but, with my wife also using the system, that's why I stick with Harmony. Having that Insteon IR receiver, I just set up a scene inside ISY, program Harmony to send an IR blast and that's how I get all to work together. With Harmony, I have set up scene where when I turn on the TV, it'll turn on TV, turn on Receiver, ramp down lights. Pretty seemless for my wife not to complain. As far as devices, I have about 50, I have a smaller home so.. And I agree, the newer are better now..

    Thanks for posting this video it was very useful! It looks like I’ll be able to fully automate a blind for about $350 (~$200 motor/controller/misc, $100 Insteon 2450s, $50 blind). A few questions... 1. With this set up, are you able to have the shades only open a partial amount, or is it only all the way open/closed? 2. I’m assuming that this whole set is specific to a single room. So if you had your theater room AND you had blind(s) in your living room that you wanted to control independently, you’d basically have to duplicate your setup for the living room blind(s). Is that correct? 3. Looks like the 12V 10A transformer power supply is for the blind controller (Rollertrol) and the Insteon 2450’s just plug into normal 120V. Is that correct? Thanks!!!

    Hi Juan, The process should work, but I don't believe the motors are IP rated for outdoor use. That said, if they aren't exposed directly to the elements (no water can get to them) and you use outdoor rated wiring and connectors, they would probably be fine. I know that isn't a great answer, but I've never used them outdoors myself.

    Actually, I already have made the blind on a motorized roller. The blind is behind a picture frame and covers a cut out in my kitchen that houses my coffee maker. When I lower the blind I catches on a shelf. I would like it to be up against the frame so it doesn't catch. The only way I can think to do this is if there was some kind of channel behind the frame that the blind would slide into. Does this make sense?

  • @smarthomeMASTERY

    @smarthomeMASTERY

    I think I understand what you are saying. Some thoughts I had are: You could build a little box frame so that the picture frame sticks out further and makes room for the blind and motor; you could cut the shelf back a little; or as you said, you could notch the frame, but is the frame thick enough to do that?

    I'm still looking for a solution for an exterior sunshade.. The mechanism is already in place, and it just requires a switchable turning device, like an electric screwdriver motor to turn the mechanism. I'm surprised I can't find anything... Only ways to rotate the tube for indoor blinds.

    Hi Bev, The motor I reference has a 12lbs lift, so as long as the blind weighs a bit less than that, then you should be ok. It is only lifting the full weight of the blind if it is fully extended, but you need to add some wiggle room for the weight of the tube, etc. There are other tubular motors that have a higher lifting capacity, so if the blind does weigh close to or more than 12lbs, then I would go up to a bigger motor. It looks like Rollertrol has bigger motors, but I'm not sure if they have any that are wired. You could still use them, but you would have to automate them differently than the way I show in this video. Amazon also has a lot of different options. Just look up tubular motors. Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any other questions. Happy to answer what I can.
