Cheap 6-Ton Hydraulic Bench-top Press Unbox and Review - Garage Extra Part 7

I bought the cheapest 6-ton hydraulic press that would get here in a reasonable time frame from Amazon and when it arrived the box was in shambles. In this video, I unboxed it and gave it a quick review while also making it do some work. What I got was not exactly what was pictured in the sale page but nevertheless I was extremely surprised by the results. Vevor, "manganese" springs? I use it to press the bearing off the old pinion gear and check the spacer thickness. Also tried pressing out a wheel stud from an old ford foxbody mustang gt front rotor.

Just chimmin' in to thank you on your honest review of the EXACT one I'm eyeing for occasional use on replacing wheel bearings & all. Being stored in the shed, I wanted a small foot print. This one fits the bill!

Np bud, it's a decent unit for the price and you can definitely upgrade it. Not without it's faults of course but even expensive stuff has their trade offs.

I made my own 10 T shop press about 2 years ago. Works great whenever I need it. I store it under my work bench. Too bad we can't post pics of the tools we build.

That sounds handy, I'd love to see it. I'd like to bolster this one a bit, I've had it get a little bendy in some sketchier presses. Did you follow plans?

I have a similar press that's a bit taller. Im surprised how much I use it. I've probably had it for 20 years, and a few days ago i finally mounted it onto a small flat dolley cart. Now it can be easily moved away from the wall for use, or even just to clean the floor. I would be lost without my little press!!

That's a great idea, having it on wheels sounds like it'd make it easier to fit larger parts in. Definitely a super handy tool to have in the shop but I'm getting about to the end of the lifespan of the bottle jack that came with it. Luckily it's an easy replacement.

Well..., I've been doing the research-thing and found you. We need a light-duty press for processing small electric motors, transformers and other random stuff. I found it at the Vevor online outlet. Then I got a Honey Coupon for $10 off and free shipping at $98.00. I'll probably make a video and of course I'll give your channel a shout-out. Thanks for the review.

Awesome! I definitely think it's worth it at that price. I wanted to do a follow-up video about some of the quirks I had with it, but really the only one worth mentioning is that you can over extend the pump throw (at least on mine). It gets into a weird state where it doesn't pump the jack and just bounces a bit. I forget how I fixed it but it was something easy/silly like over extending it again. Either way, the jack is the easiest part of it to replace if it ever becomes a problem. Good luck!

So what you do is you use your bearing tool kit with your harbor press. Somtimes you might need to use the manual tool to get a stubborn bearing started. Then use the harbor press to finish up.

I bought similar in 8 tonne flavour some five years ago. It’s not square either and it didn’t come with much in the way of accessories or press blocks but I have built up a few now and it’s ‘ok’. That’s as far as it goes and I would now like something better. I think you might find yourself in a similar position wanting to upgrade in time. Thanks for making this video and subscribed 👍

Awesome thanks! I think I'm going to do a follow up on this one because it ended up letting me down a bit and the bottle jack is very temperamental. It got me over the line but definitely feel like an upgrade will be required in the future as you mentioned.

I was surprised to see the bottom channels didn't bend. That seems to be the primary complaint for this model. I ordered this press today. It will be interesting to see what it can do. If need be, I can weld and reinforce whatever.

I bought it expecting the same thing tbh. I'm sure with an upgraded cylinder it 100% would. I did take a lot of care to make sure my presses were going in straight to avoid adding stress to the support channels but I'd probably do that with a stronger press too. Good luck with yours, let me know if you end up bolstering it at all.

I ordered the exact same unit from Amazon for about $95.00... Just so I could install some basic pinion bearings... Like you said... If I need a better unit later, I'll justify the cost then...

Yep it's great for small stuff like that. Also still happy I purchased a bench-top press rather than a floor unit for the space it uses versus how frequently I use it. Can always upgrade later.

Did you have to weld the jack to the plate?

  • @SleazysGarage

Nope, it's held in place by the spring pressure. Also I plan on replacing the jack at some point because this one has a few idiosyncrasies with the pump mechanism that make it annoying to use.

Thanks for the Video, I would recommend to rotate the "Bearing Splitter Tool" 90 degrees next time you use it with your Shop Press, the way you have it orientated could possibly bend the "Bolts" of the Bearing Splitter. Randy AKA randog311 (Retired Professional Wrench)

When I bought it it was $136.98 but they seem to go for less than $100 now. The exact item listing on amazon isn't available anymore but the other ones like it are basically the same item.
