    Nice video guys. BTW I actually fitted those seat covers last year after spending a few hours cleaning the seats after they got pretty dirty. For info, the van died on a roundabout going from 2nd to 3rd gear at around 20-25mph.

    Chris on camera! ..... 👀... It doesn't happen often, but it's gold when it does! He is a great fountain of knowledge that hopefully we will all tap into as the channel progresses, He is a great problem solver and a back street enginerd par-excellence... I loved the rotisserie, that was some great 'on the fly' thinking, but the idea is only half of it, you have to bring it to reality, and he does that so well

    It will be the vacuum pump on the end of the exhaust cam rob, there are common pal, the vac pump breaks and can cause the camshaft to lock up and that’s probably wot as ripped the teeth off. Good luck with the rebuild! I’ve know some people get away with just a new vacuum pump.

    Thanks for keeping the videos moving. If the video is 25 minutes long but has loads of content then I'm happy to watch them in full. There are some people who would spend 25 minutes a piece on half a dozen videos of 'Collecting our new van', 'driving home with our new van', 'getting our new van in the workshop' etc. which whould be an absolute drag. Keep up the great work, it's always good to see you working on something new.

    That was the quickest 26 minutes I have ever experienced. I really do like (Both) your attitudes when you do this work, because a lot of mechanics would decide “sod it, that`ll do!” You two, decent blokes, really do “stand out a mile” with your honesty, integrity and determination. If you don`t know about something, you openly admit it and don`t try to bulldoze your way thtough. “Absolute pleasure to watch and more power to your elbow, both.”

    The first diesel engine I worked on was a snapped cambelt. A Bedford Midi, which was an Isuzu. It sheared the rockers and did no further damage. 50 quid for replacement rockers from a scrapyard, new head gasket and oil seals (oil had leaked on to the belt, which caused the breakage) and new belt. Timing tools were just bolts to lock the sprockets and a small piece of angle iron to lock the camshaft and it was sorted. Other engines can be totally wrecked once a belt snaps. How sensible to design an engine with brittle rockers! Looks like this one isn't too bad either, even though it wasn't the rockers. If only people changed cambelts when they should be changed.

  • @rickconstant6106

    @rickconstant6106

    The old Transit 2.5 Di used to break belts quite a lot, but you could usually get away with replacing a few bent pushrods, the occasional rocker and the lower belt cover where the belt had wrapped around the crank sprocket. Even after they went out of production, Ford was still introducing modified parts to try to make them more reliable.

    That's a pretty good catch. The long wheelbase is a lot more unusual on the Transit Custom, pretty much all of them you see around are the short wheelbase so that could make it a much more desirable vehicle when it's all fixed... The engines on these are a bit notorious for issues, but I understand that the issues have been sorted out now. Time will tell... The old Vauxhall Family OHC engines used a separate cam carrier on top of the head too. In a lot of way it makes sense as issues with the camshaft won't kill the, much more expensive, cylinder head...

  • @desmondmcdonagh9667
    @desmondmcdonagh96673 жыл бұрын

    With the cam lobes pressed on like you say and if the valves are able to push the cam lobes having give in them at a certain pressure rather than bending the valve when piston makes contact from stripped teeth or a broken belt etc . I’d rather change the cam box assembly than pull the head off . Providing like you said you dodged a bullet with the valves and there seating etc . It’s still a lot off labour for a belt . Considering mileage I’d nearly keep going and whip the engine out . Check the clutch flywheel and rear main seal . And you’d have access to see and repair and weaps and potential leaks that are a pain to get at with everything reinstalled . The long way round is often the shortest way home . For the peace off mind you can confidently give warranty on resale

    We’ve got a couple of those Transits on the works van fleet. Been nothing but trouble, brake failure, new gearbox, belts, constant DPF problems - luckily all the vans are leased so the lease company picks up the tab!

    My cousin was always having DPF issues with his Transit due to nature of his work (short local trips). Luckily we never had any issues with this one as it was mostly doing longer journeys on the motorway.

    Cam-belt change interval 144k/10 years, they never make this as belts not man enough due to diesel in engine oil deteriorates the belt, you were also lucky to get injectors out, as normally seize in.
