    Had same fault ( crankshaft end float) with low mileage 1.4 Mokka. Vauxhall dealership quoted £7,000 to replace engine after trying a set of shells. Low miles, full Vauxhall service history, customer had car just over a year : no warranty or contribution. I bought accident damaged Mokka from Copart & swapped engine, had customer back on road for under £3,000. Common fault on 1.4 Vauxhalls.

    Crank walk is the thrust bearing failed. It's not a dead engine. It probably wasn't aligned properly OR it has been abused by the driver riding the clutch. The garage obviously changed the clutch and the problem was still there so they opened the sump and found the thrust bearing has failed. Rather than removing the crankshaft or being honest with the customer, to keep the money from the job they packed it up and sent it down the road. A bit of a shitty move by the garage.

    Crank thrust bearing wear is a known issue on those Rob. Have you guys checked the excess end float on the crank, and what's the rest of the engine condition like ? I wouldn't just assume some engine work has been done because of the new sealant. It may have been a quick check once the clutch wasn't found to be the cause, and they've replaced the friction plate as a matter of course. The owner may have decided they'd spent enough already, especially as most of the job would be a repeat of the parts stripdown already done, again. Depending on its potential resale value, and how much you're in to it already, you could just be looking at a new oversized main bearing set to fix it, possibly a crank dress / grind and big ends too. If it's a genuine mileage car, then it should be worth spending a bit, but maybe not to the extent of an engine swap.

    How is oversize main bearings going to fix end float

  • @brianwhittington5086

    @brianwhittington5086

    4 ай бұрын

    @@garyevans9509 Depending on the design, many engines have just a centre main bearing with shoulders, that are the thrust bearing face. They have different thickness of white metal coating. It may , or may not need a crank grind to get bearings with the right combination of diameter, and thrust face thickness. Whoever stripped it down after the clutch was found to be OK, may not have even taken a main cap off. They may have not wanted the hassle and frightened the customer that it needed an engine rebuild. The guys could get out of it with the simplicity of a new main set, depending what's there regarding wear. It's the sort of car that attracts abuse of the clutch on full bore standing starts, so putting excess wear on the fore/ aft thrust on the crankshaft.

    From what I have discovered on KZread is in fact the end float on the crankshaft when operating the clutch is in fact the thrust bearings need replacing. So now with all in situ, drop the sump and replace them. Years ago my big ends went, so drained the sump. Laid on my back under the car removed the sump, dropped the crank, and fitted oversized bearings. Put it all back together and drove it it for many miles. Hillman Minx 1968..

    My daughter had the same thing luckily her car was under warranty. She ended up with a new engine & the Vauxhall dealer said there was a batch of engines that the thrust washers feel apart.

    I served my apprenticeship at Opel/Vauxhall dealers in the early 80s, the old school front wheel drive clutch changes were a doddle, didn’t even use a ramp ! By the way reference the spigot bearing, I seem to remember we were told to bin it and not replace it !

    I bought a 1982 3/4 ton Toyota pickup with that problem overly aggressive transmission installation can knock the thrust bearing loose. My engine detonated after 30 miles. Great looking car. Thank You so much Gentlemen for being so genuine not everyone shares the failures.

    Triumph sixes were notorious for crank end float. There was a C shaped thrust washer that often fell into the sump. once this happened if you operated the clutch the crank would move 1/8" forward or even 1/4". This forced the pistons into the sides of the bores and ovality was the side effect ........ a rebore and new pistons the cure. Sometimes the crank land was so worn the crank was scrap as well. I've not known the problem with any other unit.

    It could potentially have been done by the garage the old chap bought it from if it had had warranty issues, maybe? I don't think a subscriber would sell it to you knowing that, or you'd like to think so at least. They could've sold it on FB marketplace if they were kicking the problem down the road. Anyway, interesting video!

    Had similar on a Landrover TD5 engine, harmonic balancer failed and owner kept driving it (before I bought it) the vibration shook the thrust washers out, I imagine a failed DMF would do the same... Ended up rebuilding mine with a good used crank and all new bearings etc. Great content as always 👍

    those small turbos get real hot,termostat 105 celsius and all the cooling issius, but the block and the crankshaft and rods is very good for that heat.

    The old ways were the best... boy came to replace the clutch on my Mk1 Astra... did it on the driveway, he used a jack, 2 axle stands, took him all of 45mins, had a cuppa, and was on his way. There was an access plate on or near (I can't remember, it was the 90s) the bellhousing, practically changed itself.

    @@JJSmith1100 that's probably right enough... It was more than a few moons ago, when I had my old, beloved Mk1 Astra. I just remember he was finished and away in less than an hour (including his cup of tea). Lol.

    As far as I recall that was a feature on the F12, F14 and F16 gearboxes and likely many others where 80s and 90s Vauxhalls were concerned. Fitted a high compression Astra 1.4 Family 0 to my ex's Nova in the early 2000s and in my haste to get the car back in one piece I actually forgot to fit the throwout bearing (I'd hired a lovely big engine hoist from HSS and it was due back in the morning and already back in bits in the back of my 16v Maestro). Thank Christ the CR Astra F14 'box fitted had the access panel and the ability to displace the input shaft, clever Vauxhall/Opel!
