Cheap $119 Chinese Pump Shotgun BURNDOWN

The Stevens 320 Security is a Chinese-made Winchester 1200/1300 pump shotgun clone imported by Savage Arms. At just $119 street price, it's one of the least expensive pump shotguns you can buy in 2023. It's also got desirable features for a home defense shotgun like a short 18.5 inch barrel and 5+1 capacity with 2.75" 12 gauge rounds. But for $119, is this gun actually worth owning? James subjects this shotgun to the world famous 500 round shotgun burndown to find out.

@tfbtv - I have that same shotgun but with a pistol grip. For the money it is RELIABLE and for home defense it is good. It will also shoot those mini shells which kick about 60-65% less than normal 2 3/4 shells. And you can do 9+1 of those. If you are on a budget then yeah get this one.. but be sure to spend some range time to limber it up and do what I did. Before I assembled it I lubricated it some then limbered it up at a range, cleaned it and re-lubricated it.

Several years ago I was working at a gun shop while attending college. I remember these Stevens 320's were good sellers, right behind the Maverick 88 7-shot Security models and the 18.5"/28" combo kits. The Stevens 320's at the time had different furniture than the one in the video. Some versions came with pistol grip stocks as well as there were field/security combo kits. I bought a 320 4 years ago. It's got a conventional butt stock with a pistol grip. Also has nice ghost ring rear sight with a green fiber optic(I think that is what it is called) front sight. It has a ventilated barrel shroud also, mostly for cosmetic purposes I think, but if you are doing extended firing like this guy did I guess it could save you from being burned. It works great, I think its a nice package. I don't remember how much I paid for it but I think it was some where between $150 - $200. I am perfectly happy with it and would trust my life with it, using quality ammo that I know works well in it, of course, but that holds true with any defensive firearm.

Just a theory on the bioammo, if the shell itself is made of a softer material than normal plastic it may be jamming up because the chamber tolerance is too loose and it's allowing the shells to expand more. Could be an issue with the brass as well, but this is just a guess because I've never used the stuff. Side note, some grip tape on the fore grip would be a cheap and very useful upgrade

  • @ryannieva442

That being said the very first time I shot one was on vacation when I was fourteen at Callaway Gardens and I got to shoot trap with my father. I personally over that and the following five days put almost six hundred rounds through a single shotgun that I got to pick from the rack. Little did I know at the time that I was beating the tar out of gun. By the end of the vacation my shoulder was a "bit tender" but I fell in love with trap through that outing. I have read of folks taking birding trips to south america where they shoot five hundred plus shells per day for a week or more so I guess a "real" shotgun is supposed to last tens of thousands of rounds. I had no idea a shotgun could fail with fewer than five hundred. That is just crazy cheap manufacturing. Learn something new every day. Cheers.

@@Sig_P229 They were during that time if I remember it was Freedom group. Just got into hunting that time and bought a 870 super mag. The chamber wasn't cut right and like Mitsurugi2424 said I had to hone and polish the chamber. On the bevel where the case head would flow into after shooting there was a ring right in the middle that would catch your finger nail. On hot days or when the gun got hot, especially the cheap hi-velocity copper washed steel case head dove shells would get stuck in the chamber. I had changed out the extractor to a machined one and not the MIM one to help with extraction. Shells would get stuck soo bad the upgraded extractor would rip the rim of the case head mortaring it on the ground. Sucks on hot 100F+ days and doves just blowing by you left and right. Didn't help that the ejector broke at the very front of the front rivet, and would sometimes cause random hang ups. Found this about 10 years later finally replaced it. It had broke the first time I took it to the range. I know this because I had always thought the ejector looked funny from a non super magnum action when took the shotgun to breakin the very first time. Just assumed because it was a longer action it looked that way, when in fact both use the same exact ejector and spring.

I have two of these 320s. I have just under $100 on each one. One is a pistol grip and the other is a traditional stock Both have been good runners once broken in, My biggest problem is the shape of the butt stock. They both hurt, but the pistol gripped one isn't as bad. The best part is that I don't worry about scratches when I put them in the truck or car.

As the owner of another knock-off of the Winchester 1200 design (Ted Williams 200 in 20ga - sears house brand in the late 60s) I can agree with some things in the video: TO fix the sticky - keep clean and lube the locking lugs of the bolt and the rails of the bolt carrier. Failure to lubricate the bolt will cause more jams (it also just needs alot of lube and cleaned often - it is not a AK, do not treat it like one or you will have problems) and failure to lubricate the carrier rails will cause wear in the receiver. TO fix the recoil - mine lives with a limb saver on it (BTW - put duct tape or similar on the inside of the limb saver or the sticky nature of the pad will ruin the finish of a wood stocked gun). But any good recoil pad will do. Ruins the svelte lines but saves your shoulder (esp with 3" magnum shells) Mine has the varichoke which I actually quite like and is effective as a screw in as far as I can tell, and with a +3 tube extension it is a nice fit. Other than that mine has been shot so much the bluing on the tube is gone where the forearm reciprocates and I would add that mine is as smooth as glass....the old ones at least earned the "speed pump" moniker. Maybe it is a combination of break-in, chinese machining, or the fact that mine has a nice squared checkered wood fore-end, but instead of doing a "push/pull" technique try pre-loading the forearm rearward (i.e. pulling it in tension toward you while firing) and the action springs open with the recoil in one VERY FAST motion. I don't even think about "opening" the action anymore - I just focus on recovery and reload and you can be very fast with a follow up shot. It does not slam fire though.

I ran 3 Gun Heavy Metal for years with a Winchester 1300 which is the same action, and I took the entire bolt out and polished it with Flitz then used a 12 gauge bore mop chucked into a drill to polish the barrel locking lugs. It was hot buttered tiddies after that. I shoot trap with the full size 320 now and did the same to it and it runs equally well. Back in the day at 3 Gun I used the same technique you're describing but I practiced punching the slide forward and onto the next target after each shot. So I would pull the forearm like you describe, ride the slide back under its own power, and then punch the slide onto the next target with my slide hand and press the trigger. I hade a Choate stock and mag extension on that one and it held 11 shells so I would frequently clear stages faster than guys with Benelli's because I didn't have to reload.

I figured it would survive. Up here in the frozen wastelands of Canada we used to get Chinese 870 clones called the Dominion Arms Grizzly. Those things are built like tanks, if memory serves the short barrel variant weighed about 8 pounds. I sold mine off when I got a 590, but occasionally think I should have kept it around. One thing to note about these - Some of the early production had a critical issue with how the slide bar assembly was welded and it liked to break. This issue was an identical copy of an issue with very early Winchester pumps. When that happened to me, the support was good about it and they replaced it immediately when it broke. This issue was supposed to be resolved several years ago now though so you *probably* won't see it on anything you buy new today. They beefed up the welds and installed a stiffer slide release spring. You do have to look out for it on the second hand market though. If you're going to get one second hand, be sure to look up how to spot the difference. You can tell by the welds. You definitely don't want one that might totally break when it matters.

I had an old Norinco 870 clone that was imported as a "pardner pump." Once I installed a volquartsen extractor that thing became fucking unstoppable and I easily ran over 800 rounds through it before I ended up having to sell. I honestly regret selling that thing.

James, I did some research on the manufacturer of this shotgun...and found something interesting. The Stevens shotguns (320 and 301 series) are made by Sun City Machinery Co Ltd (山东日照兄弟机械公司) in China. According to the registration info this company primarily produces sporting goods such as treadmills, barbells and bicycles; making firearms for American importers is merely its "side job". It kinda explains the flaws during the torture test...if the workers over there only make guns on a part-time basis while spending most of the time making bicycles. By the way I'm pretty happy with mine...was torn between Mav 88 and this sucker & ended up with the latter one thanks to its shorter LOP. 500 rounds of down the barrel & no hiccups so far!

On that topic the JTS X12 is made by sub-beam precision which is an airgun factory in China. What makes that strange in particular is the other offerings by JTS are made by the chongqing mikitary factory.

  • @clothar23

Doubt it. The problem is likely caused by the bio plastic being softer than normal plastic. Which combined with the looser tolerances of the gun caused the shells to over expand and thus stick. In fact the problem would likely be worse after the break in period. As the tolerances get even looser.

My first shotgun was a stevens 320 with a 28 in barrel. Put about 100 rounds through it with no issue. But sold it because the coating was starting to rust in about a year and thats with maintenance.

I've had similar issues with Bioammo in my 1956 870 Wing Master. Everything else I've shot feeds perfectly. The Bioammo seems to be a touch bigger than it should be and jams up a little bit

Like many, I got this as my first shotty on the cheap during the pandemic. $250 for the security version with the FDE and heatguard that does, something, I guess. It's never skipped a beat. A couple hundred rounds of Federal target rounds from Wally World and a few dozen of 2 3/4 and 3 inch slugs later, hey man, the thing is cheap, it'll remind you that you can take a little recoil for the 'tactical weight,' when you're swininging it around for targets. It eats rounds like a hungry horny hippo without ever stuttering. No complaints; I'll ride or die.

My first shotgun 😂 Paid way more during covid for it. Not a good shotgun as you said but surprisingly durable enough. Also, yeah, the recoil is absurdity more than most others due to the light weight and hollow stock and the hard as F butt pad. I'll stick with my 1897 winchester now but the 320 isn't the worst choice

I love these videos. Interesting, I think a lot of the Stevens designs are made off old US designs, and some are OK even being made in china. But they are CHEAP in every sense of the word... I had a Savage/stevens 301 .410 break action, and it felt like a toy, but ran great.

I bought the pistol grip 12 and 20 gauge version of this gun for 300 total. They came with ghost ring sights and a picatinny rail. I threw some grip tape on the forend, which made a huge difference. They're not great guns by any means, but the run. I've got a 590, 500 20 gauge and 1301 tac for myself, these are inexpensive loners for family and friends.
