    The nickname Che was not acquired by Guevarra as a child, but during his travels in America. This emphasized his Argentine origin. In his childhood and adolescence he was called Tete, short for Ernesto.

    @soulsaproductions2024

    That's absolutely right. He acquired it while he was in Mexico with Castro and the other Cuban revolutionaries he met there. 'Che' is very commonly used in Argentina. It's the equivalent of 'mate' in UK English or 'buddy' or 'dude' in US English. The Cubans were so amused by Guevara's frequent use of the word 'che' that it became his nickname.

    Being a great nephew of Ernesto, i concur, this tube is complete nonsense, he got the nickname in Bolivia because ché is what he'd use as a greeting when entering guerrilla camps. It's an Argentine verbal tick, more common in Buenos Aires. I can allways spot Argentines in Europe, it's similar to 'like' for brainless valley girls, only it also serves as 'hello', 'ciao', and occasional expletive, as well as 'dude', 'wow', 'damn', et c . Toptenz, his other channel is even more idiotic.

    I studied Cuban history in college, and it turned out that one of the Spanish professors was a Cuban lawyer who spoke to our class. He related how he grew up with the Castros and fought with them in the mountains. After the revolution succeeded, he said, he was made a judge by Fidel. But - it turned out - that he was expected to sentence "enemies" to death on Castro's orders. With tears in his eyes, he spoke about the betrayal of his ideals, and of leaving Cuba on one of the last possible flights.

    I think it’s so important for us to look at the early lives and how people such as Ché grew up. It tells so much more about them than the later parts of their life when they actually did the things they’re famous for. Like for example, Ché going through rigorous schooling for years in order to become a doctor to help people in his country. Knowing all that just adds a couple shades to everything else he did in life. It just kinda legitimizes him as someone who was genuinely trying to help his people. As opposed to many of the other leaders out there who just use the system to become an all powerful dictator with an endless supply of power and money.

    An interesting side-note not mentioned are Che's Irish roots (Lynch family). His ancestor had fled Ireland to Spain and then to what would become Argentina after a losing the fight with Cromwell's forces in the 1700's. As Che's father said, “the first thing to note is that in my son’s veins flowed the blood of the Irish rebels”. On his 100th birthday, Ireland had a postage stamp with his image. And the iconic two-tone image of Che is by Irish artist, Jim Fitzpatrick.

    To me it is amazing how what used to be a powerful Spanish Empire was disintegrated and all this countries created a story of their own influenced by Great Britain (old enemies of the spanish empire) and the USA, a whole world forgotten at the south of Anglo America that has, in its own rigth, the most unique history and it seams to be still a resounding voice of the global Spanish Empire. A guy like Che traveled almost the entirety of this huge land and felt nothing but sorrow and anger towards the USA, that lone fact, to me... speaks on its own.

    The Spanish are not the victims here and Spain has got to be one of the least marginalised nations on Earth. On top of that, Britain wasn’t just the enemy of Spain - Spain was hated across Europe during the 16th century up until the Peace of Westphalia at least - largely due its attitude regarding its new world trade routes - and the Netherlands are the ones who came up with the “golden legend”. Che did not feel anger at the USA because the Spanish Empire disappeared ffs. Promoting neo-colonialism will go do soooo well with the indigenous peoples of Latin America!

    Also, “Anglo-USA” ?! Have you seen the influence Irish and Italian Immigrants have had there? The Scots-Irish? You’re extremely ignorant of the legacy Britain had in America - the UK has had no colonial influence outside of Canada there since 1815 (war of 1812). The Founding Fathers deliberately went about creating a new historical culture for the USA, which is why Columbus is revered there and why Americans no longer play cricket. Post-1865 the US underwent rapid change that made it even more distinct. You’re using your xenophobic hatred of Britain (due to events 300+ ago) to try and explain away why the US has such a poor reputation in Latin America…

    @@XellosMetalliumYour intel was obsolete before you were even born, mate. Here's a fact check: The guy was born in Argentina, where most people are white or white-ish, so his way of seeing things was initially influenced by that. Before becoming a Marxist, at the age of merely 24, Guevara said this in his diary: "The blacks, those magnificent examples of the African race who have maintained their racial purity thanks to their lack of an affinity with bathing, have seen their territory invaded by a new kind of slave: the Portuguese. [...] The black is indolent and a dreamer; spending his meager wage on frivolity or drink; the European has a tradition of work and saving, which has pursued him as far as this corner of America and drives him to advance himself, even independently of his own individual aspirations." He was clearly racist then. However, after gaining class consciousness and maturing, he became staunchly anti-racist. In 1964, while adressing the United Nations, he said the following: "The final hour of colonialism has struck, and millions of inhabitants of Africa, Asia and Latin America rise to meet a new life and demand their unrestricted right to self-determination. [...] We speak out to put the world on guard against what is happening in South Africa. The brutal policy of apartheid is applied before the eyes of the nations of the world. The peoples of Africa are compelled to endure the fact that on the African continent the superiority of one race over another remains official policy, and that in the name of this racial superiority murder is committed with impunity. Can the United Nations do nothing to stop this? [...] Those who kill their own children and discriminate daily against them because of the color of their skin; those who let the murderers of blacks remain free, protecting them, and furthermore punishing the black population because they demand their legitimate rights as free men - how can those who do this consider themselves guardians of freedom? The government of the United States is not the champion of freedom, but rather the perpetrator of exploitation and oppression against the peoples of the world and against a large part of its own population." In the case of whether he was homophobic or not, it's still up to debate; but he was undeniably anti-racist in the years when his opinion mattered, which is when he got into politics. Also, Cuba was reactionary at first, but they became more and more progressive over the years; just like Guevara, in a way. Castro regretted his homophobia in his final years.

    Right? What the hell. Usually, I don't take KZread comments to heart, but this one truly offended me. That guy is trivializing the brutal rape and murder of many millions of people by the henchmen of a deranged psychopath bent on thinning out the population of his own country, then Clown Asshat up there thinks he'll jump on the populace bandwagon and say that Che was more dangerous. Now I REALLY hope BioGraphics does a piece on Pol Pot, because obviously not enough people know the atrocities committed by him and the Khmer Rouge. And that's why I've been asking for it for so long. A ton of people died a horrifying, brutal death after having their lives stripped of meaning by their leader and not enough is ever said about it. It NEEDS to be more widespread. The asshole who trivialized the horror of it all is a prime example.

    I had to downvote because of the manipulation and lack of key information presented; the CIA involvement in his murder for one and the word choice when speaking of the prison torture for another. How do you fail to do the minimal research necessary to even get the story behind his nickname wrong? Also, the double standard of feeling the need to present him as a murderer in the title when in comparison to other historical figures, many of them presidents or generals, who were involved in and even instigators of war themselves. This isn’t the first video I’ve noticed with inaccurate and clearly biased information that helps portray western imperialist influences in a more positive light.

I felt the video idealized him far too much and found too nice a way to describe his brutal murder of innocent people in the name of a revolution that has, in the years since, led to the deaths of thousands more. His intelligence and compulsion to help people was noble, shame that the conclusion he came to was the subjection of the people and the murder of any who disagreed.

    I grew up in Latin America, although one of my parents is from the USA: for fun and extra cash she taught English as a second language to adults where we lived, including to quite a few Argentinian students. I got to know them very well, along with their Argentinian accent, syntax, and slang. “Che” was not just a childhood nickname for Ernesto, it actively was and still is a very common filler word in Argentinian speech, like in some conversations it might even be every sixth or seventh word… in English, although it means “pal,” it’d be more like a combination of “dude,” “bro,” and “like,” something you’d call someone but also the word you’d invoke instead of “um.” Also, if you’re calling Guevara a murderer, if you ever post a biography of US President George Washington I expect you to call him a murderer too, for the great number of extrajudicial executions he ordered, both of his own troops for infractions such as stealing food or threatening to desert, and of random civilians he encountered for infractions such as openly sympathizing with the British or being rumored to spy for them. Frankly, you have to call everyone who was ever involved in any way with any war a murderer… which would be sort of an extreme pacifist position for you to take, but I would not object, so long as you applied that judgment evenhandedly and realistically across all the revolutionary and wartime figures you cover, and not just selectively to those who fought controversial battles.

    If you found this interesting I would recommend reading Guevara’s Motorcycle Diaries, his account of his trip through South America as a young medical student with his friend Alberto on his motorcycle, La Poderosa II. It was before Guevara was heavily involved in revolutionary activity (as in Cuba for which he is best known) but you notice perhaps some of the seeds are being planted when he checks out some mines and plants owned by American firms, and the state of the very poor and especially the indigenous populations of South America. Che’s writing style is sometimes beautiful, and sometimes humorous. It’s one of my favorite books I’ve read recently (although I am a total sucker for Latin American culture so it adds up! lol) and I totally recommend it! (They also made a film out of the diaries but I haven’t seen it so idk if it’s any good) I’m interested to hear if anyone else has read this book or plans to.
