In this video I'm going to walk you through my experience using Klutz GPT, an After Effects extension that allows you to access Chat GPT directly inside After Effects and is tailored to writing, applying, and debugging scripts and expressions. I have no script writing experience but was still able to use Klutz GPT to successfully create 3 useful, completely working scripts for After Effects. This blew my mind. Even better, through the process of working with the AI, I was able to start picking up on how the javascript code was working, and actually began to understand it and make my own modifications. The AI literally taught me how to code. If that doesn't get you excited about AI, I don't know what will. I've made all three dockable script panels available to download and even converted them into Kbar scriplet versions with custom icons. Try them out for yourself and let me know what you think!

This is cool from an After Effects perspective, but this is mind blowing from a AI assistant perspective. This is the first time I've seen someone model how effective using an AI assistant can be, from iterating on an idea, to actually helping us learn specific concepts. It feels like a glimpse into the future. Wild.

Ohh man this is so good!! I've been using it to write expressions and/or explain what certain expression are doing. Outside of useful KZread videos from you and some others It's been a huge learning tool. I'm now more interested in expressions and they don't seem so daunting anymore. But to have this all inside of AE is incredible!!

I went through this exact same process with macros scripts in google sheets a couple of days ago and found all the same challenges and workarounds in terms of starting new chats when it seemed to be an endless repeat of errors etc. I’m definitely going to see if I can add an undo group to my macro scripts too though. This is a super useful tip I totally hadn’t thought about! Great video. Thanks!

I'm loving this so much. I don't use klutz GPT (as I didn't get the API key to work) but I've been creating little scriptlets with chat-gpt for a couple weeks now almost on a daily basis. This combines so well with kbar it's insane. The tips you gave are top notch and I can't stress the "start over" point enough. I'd even go as far as saying you should ask for the same thing 5 times before continuing with the best version (unless it already works of course). I can see the excitement in your eyes and the hype is justified. This tool is a game changer! I personally use the "expressionist" code editor in after effects, pretty handy too!

I asked to write a script to convert my illustrator file to vector and delete unused paths without deform shape and colour, as json files have some limitations like it won't work with merge path etc.😅 I tried for a couple of hours and finally gave up. I knew it's complicated and i don't know how scripts work but it was fun.

I frequently make animations in dual language (English and Te Reo Maori). Being a native english speaker I do the english first. Te Reo is usually about 30% longer, so I often have to extend a hundred layers to the end of a new timeline. When ChatGPT first came out, it amazed me when I asked it if it could write an AE script and it said yes, so I asked it to write a script to extend every layer to the end of the new timeline. My first ChatGPT script did this without errors, but didn't work on pre-comps, so with a single amendment (hey chat GPT, can you make this work with pre-comps and video files?), the script also adds time-remapping and moves the keyframe to the end. worked the first time! Getting this script working took me less than an hour. To hand code it would have taken me a week! Game-changer indeed.

At least to such an extend that, unless i'm doing somethign very repetitive on a daily or at least weekly bases, it's faster to just do it myyself than to try to steer chatGPT into doing what I need it to do, and doing it by hand is also less frustrating. great development in tech, but it's not there yet
