Ray Dalio is clearly the GOAT when it comes to investing so I take his advice as gospel but no one ever gives good examples of a diversified portfolio and its returns over say a 40 year period. Nearly every asset is correlated now as they are all heavily influenced by interest rates and the economy and with the rise of algorithmic trading and machine learning most arbitrages are now gone. People say gold goes up in a recession - nope - gold goes down (everything goes down) it just bounces back quicker. People say diversify into property property takes multiples longer to recover from crashes than stocks.

And I have a follow up question. What does Ray think of Charlie Munger’s philosophy of not being diversified? He calls it diworseification as you might get a good enough rate of return to generate wealth.

I am Brazilian and I only invest in Brazil. My portfolio is divided into four classes, namely Fixed Income, Variable Income, Exchange (30% each) and Speculation (10%). I make monthly contributions in the class most outdated in relation to the original percentages. When a class hits 50% I sell the surplus of that class (20%) and balance to mirror the original (30,30,30,10). This is indeed the Holy Grail of Investments.

Diversification is 100% right, but don't look for just uncorrelated assets. Correlation only covers linear dependence. You are looking for statistically independent assets with positive returns, ones that have extremal independence. Many funds got that wrong during the financial crisis.

@Joe from chatGPT: One of Munger's famous quotes on diversification is "The idea of excessive diversification is madness." He believes that while diversification can help reduce risk, it can also dilute returns by spreading investments too thin. Munger argues that investors should focus on a few high-quality investments rather than a large number of mediocre ones. However, Munger also acknowledges that diversification is necessary to some extent. In a speech at the 2008 Annual Meeting of Shareholders of Wesco Financial Corporation, Munger stated, "We think diversification, to some extent, is a very good thing. But to the extent it causes you to be negligent in your top holdings, we think it is a very bad thing."

But again speculation hard to predict the future, and if it would happen institutions would shake it down and determine it as dead before getting it back into new bull cycles. Be careful of following even the great investors, if they fuk up (and they certainly do...Alibaba etc) they just offset their capital gains with the loss and do something else. That's not often an option for beginners. I'm slowly selling individual holdings into ETFs. I'll keep around 10% of my portfolio now in individual stocks only. Remember 90% of active investors fail to beat the market over the long term. Are you really better than them?

@Joe S&P 500 include only stocks, and it is diversified by the best available way, why i should think of investing in 10-15 companies? I did not get his point.
@pistopitpit Жыл бұрын
I maybe know and have access to 5-6 different asset classes, so finding 10-15 of these assets and uncorrelated sounds like impossible task. To me there is just one asset - equities. And diversification comes from over 7000 companies held in global index fund. I am not sure if this is the same diversification Ray is talking about.
@antoniobacic5674
Жыл бұрын
To some extent - yes. The key word in his presentation was „uncorrelated“. He carefully searched and skillfully found uncorrelated and probably even negatively correlated assets (doesn’t matter if within the same asset class or not). This is what made him rich. In lays terms, uncorrelated means that a person is “always“ going to perform well, if he has two sources of income that don’t work in tandem, so that when one doesn’t work, the other does. Example: a person, who, when it’s sunshine, drives his boat for fishing or tourists, and when it’s rainy, he gives lessons in his other profession he’s very good at. An index of global stocks is probably the best one can get without performing correlation analysis among stocks, sectors, asset classes and economies.

I’d love to see Ray answer this for 5 people with different experience levels: a child, a college graduate, a professional with one year of experience, a professional money manager with 20 years in the industry, and a retired professor of economics (like those Wired magazine videos from a few years ago). And I have a follow up question. What does Ray think of Charlie Munger’s philosophy of not being diversified? He calls it diworseification as you might get a good enough rate of return to generate wealth.

I used to think everybody went broke during the Great Depression and other major crashes but they didn’t… Some made millions, I also thought everybody went out of business during these times but they didn’t, some went into business, there's always depression/recession for some people and there's always a good time for others, it's all about perspective.

"Uncorrelated Investments" needs a bit more development. At large, all investments are correlated to some extent. I suppose what is meant is sectors as unreliant on each other as possible.

Hi. What is the fundamental unit Ray call an investment? He's talking about 10-15 specific assets that should have a low correlation between each other, or 10-15 different asset classes (with more than one asset on each class)?

As someone currently saving to become a investor. I must ask…is it important/beneficial to know what’s going on in the world? In terms of what’s being built, the “new” trends, who’s doing what, where and why, maybe even government investments like whatever is up for debate at the moment (like green energy atm)

That is why investing in broad based index fund is important
Diversification is 100% right, but don't look for just uncorrelated assets. Correlation only covers linear dependence. You are looking for statistically independent assets with positive returns, ones that have extremal independence. Many funds got that wrong during the financial crisis.
What is diversification? Is to invest in different things not related each other?

It is really mind boggling how Charlie Munger would be on the other side of the coin : "What you need is an investment that you wouldn't need diversification"... But he means it more in a practical way Ray DOES say it: you need *good* bets, but munger has seen it to often that people thinking about diversification buy 15 times crap and end up with a crap portfolio.
Diversity , physical gold & silver in your own possession ✌️
How do you define “diversify well”?
Risk managment is the most important. If you don't know how to do that then find an ETF that has that diversification and rest easy my friends.

If you don’t know what you are doing and want mediocre returns, then diversify. If you know what you are doing, pick a handful of companies that you understand inside out, and believe in for great returns.

ChatGPT is amazing, I am going to ask it how the goldman sach is pillaging the world :). Yesterday I asked it to write a table of 25 , solve an integral problem of int(sin(2x)tan(x)), amazingly it solved it step by step like humans.
I like how you don’t give an answer like a silver bullet, instead ask us to ask ourselves better questions about what we need to find out.
Deworsefication as Charlie Munger says. Other great investors also say that finding one or two great opportunities is all you need to be great investor

@@arron911 I am a pro Bitcoin also, and it will be adopted heavily with the monetary war. But again speculation hard to predict the future, and if it would happen institutions would shake it down and determine it as dead before getting it back into new bull cycles. I would be surprised if we dont hit lower than 10k next year before adoption. Goodluck out there.
Most important principles is to have millions and be patient..
So, what If construct my portfolio and it will be lying on efficient frontier, i am gonna be good investor with a stable good return? And what about investing in index? There are a lot of stocks in SP500, so it is already a good diversification, why I should think about 10-15 companies to reduce my risks if I can just buy an index?
@denisplotnikov6875
Жыл бұрын
@Joe S&P 500 include only stocks, and it is diversified by the best available way, why i should think of investing in 10-15 companies? I did not get his point.
@antoniobacic5674
I don’t think chatGPT would have said anything better than that.
If everyone diversifies will it work?
