Sure is a fancy way to apply sand on dirt roads. I remember ol' Bill Ward backing up the road with two guys in the back slinging sand using just a shovel. Ahh the good ol days!

Thanks Jim. My Dad plowed roads for years and I was fortunate enough to be his literal wingman. He had a Secord and loved it, loads of power for the Mountains in Quebec. Thanks for posting these, brings back fond memories of watching the wing throw back snow. Oh and of course a few long nights waiting for another in the crew to come pull us out.

Nice rigs that company definitely spends the money in where it needs too meaning good opertors, good trucks and good equipment and it shows in the work you guy's do 👍👍👍. Now if only British Columbia could figure that out and hire companies that can actually straight up get the job done because our roads and highways even after being plowed and Saulted they still look like garbage and can see where they missed or didn't try to get and i know many will disagree with me but i know as well many will agree with me on the matter.

I was down your way last weekend to Salt Springs (Jan 21, 2023). The roads were slushy and saw lots of plows on the 104. I was impressed with the 4 axle, double wing piece on the Cobequid Pass.

Was out with the so called big storm last week and spent 3 1/2 hours sitting at the shop. It started snowing and sticking and then they let us hit the road. Plowed ONE road and then they said let the salt trucks hit them so spent the next 5 hours driving around working the salt in driving in circles 🙄. Been out twice this season and both times the same thing. We need some snow to plow here!

I agree completely that freezing rain is the worst out of all the precipitation. Had some a few weeks ago down here on the coast in Maine. Great video as always Jim!

Just came across your video. What part of Nova Scotia are you working in. I have a niece that lives in Annapolis Royal. I'm in Southern Ontario and we have had a mild winter as well. Had a bad storm at Christmas but January has been open.

Greetings Richard! I live in Pictou County in the northern part of the province. It's been quite mild here too all winter, but went down to minus 25 Celsius overnight. We still never got any big storms yet.

That makes for an easier winter. I retired a couple years ago from the municipality that I live in. I worked on the roads dept for 34 years and seen my share of big snow storms.

Yes, we can salt or sand as we plow. Thanks for the question Kevin!

Are you dropping salt at 60 km/hr? Doesn't a lot bounce off the road? We're getting another 10-15 cm in Ottawa today.

Yes, with the e-poke spreader and I can adjust the spread of the salt to put it where I need it on the road. The salt is also being sprayed with brine as it comes out and helps to keep it from bouncing as far and also activates the salt to make it work faster. My truck holds 3200 litres of brine and the spreader puts out about a litre of brine to every 5 or 6 pounds of salt. Thanks for asking Grace!
