Chasing Smallmouth on The Great Miami River in May!

Спорт

River fishing is starting to heat up as we approach June. I took a couple days and spot-hopped around on my favorite river. The Great Miami River is a special place here in Ohio and you can catch trophy smallmouth throughout the entire 150-mile-plus-long fishery. As the smallmouth finish spawning they start moving into summer patterns chasing bait in fast currents and utilizing shady banks to ambush prey and stay cool.

I live just South of Dayton very close to the Great Miami and have never caught a smallmouth. I've got it on my to do list. I love watching your videos, they inspire me to get out and fish more. I recognized some landmarks in your vids, but I won't give away your spots, keep up the good work!

I love that you use a spinning reel and actually enjoy the peeling of a drag unlike every other fishing page that uses 50lb braid on bait casters that just horse em in!

The flatheads in the Great Miami love the smallies too, not that I ever used them for bait but I have caught flatheads from the Great Miami with the tail of a smallmouth sticking out of their gullet and they their still looking for something else to eat. But I’ve caught some decent smallies at different places in the Great Miami, along with decent Saugeyes too and walleyes. There are some walleyes in the great Miami but more Saugeye. Pretty decent rockbass too. You should go down to SE Ohio and hit the Scioto river, it’s got decent fish in it too. Southern part of the Scioto.

This is why I try my best to collect any broken line I find while fishing. I know sometimes line snaps too far out to do anything about it, but I've been places where people just cut and leave their tangled line either on the banks or just below the surface. It's such a danger to wildlife.

  • @thecreekcrawler

That's great work brother. Started this banger with 19.5 fish. Appreciate the commitment level to get that fish landed off the snag. Smallies are pretty amped up in Illinois. They and other fish are gorging on cicadas and midge flies right now. That combined with the full moon gave us a 52 fish wading trip Saturday. Lost 2 between 16-18 inches (that's the SWAG-ometer from the jumps and visual) that came unbuttoned from the custom painted cicada lures I made. Blessings B
