Landscape and Leica M is definitely an underrated combo. Most Leica M conversations revolve around street, travel, and portraits, but the compact form factor, glass, and resolution are great for landscape. Love the simple techniques you outlined, and your landscape shots are gorgeous. More content like this would be awesome. I shoot Sony but one of these days I hope to incorporate some Leica gear into my kit.

I agree with your point about the 135 for landscapes and it led me to purchase a 135 Tele-Elmar for an incredible $270. Incredibly sharp and fast enough at f4. A much easier carry for long hikes. I don’t know why so many folks are afraid of using longer glass on Ms.

I need to get a 135 for my M. I rented the APO 135 a few months ago and was unimpressed. Even at f8 nearly every shot was soft. Maybe it was a bad lens?

When I migrated from Nikon to Leica one of the items I hated to depart with was the AIS 135 f2.8. That was a great lens but I like my Leica equally. Can’t say anything about the lens you tried but have to think something was wrong with it. I did have a CLA done by DAG after I got mine simply because of the age.
Great video - practical tips and some really beautiful images. I like your approach to simplifying the gear you take and post production. 🙏👏

Look up the 90 Summarit. It's super affordable, sharp, and unless you need lower than f/2.4, all you need.
90mm is a super underrated focal length on Leica. I got the 90mm f2.4 Summarit a couple years ago and it absolutely blew me away. Super fun to punch in on a subject and get some good depth and separation from the rest of the scene

Don't take my advice... I just hope for the best! I carry it inside my jacket often, or in a bag, and only pull it out for the photo and wipe it off and put it back in. If it's raining or snowing too hard, I just don't do it. But that's only happened once when I was out taking photos, and it was in the Hoh Rainforest, ironically.
Stunning images Dave. There is just something about the colours in a landscape shot on a Leica M.

I rented that lens and every photo I did (focused at infinity) was soft and looked awful. Told Lensrental and they checked and said it was fine. To their credit, they refunded my rental, but I was really disappointed in that lens. Maybe it was a bad copy.

@@davidherring thanks brother think ima have to swing the m11 route 😂😂 won’t lie after using it I did fall in love with it and the whole experience of using it think my Fuji opened the doors for me getting into the Leica ecosystem and your videos pushed me thru the threshold 😂

@CineVinci happy I could help! You won’t regret it.
I bought my M11 mainly to do landscapes/travel and to have the 90mm f4 Elmar (which I haven’t yet been able to afford) plus a wider lens as a two lens combo. I’m not sure whether 28mm or 35mm is the better wide angle lens. In the meantime I bought a 50mm Summicron to make it easier to stitch together panorama pics as a 50mm is likely to have less distortion at the edges than wider lenses.

@@davidherring I live in the wilderness of Oklahoma and all I shoot are landscapes with the Leica M. The photos are mesmerizing on my computer. I will now take the M to Italy instead of my film camera for photography, X-Rays are a bummer...!
This was really inspirational. I have an M6 and M10 that I almost never take with me for landscape photography. I always think of them as better suited for more small-scale photography (portraits, street, etc). But this has me excited to take them on my next road trip. I also noticed you have a uv on your lens. No concerns about image degradation? Most of all, thanks!
@davidherring
Ай бұрын
You definitely should take them with you and try some landscapes. Here's the thing about UV... if shoot with it on/off and looked for any degradation, I could probably find it. But I also am jumping in/out of my car, driving with the strap around my body and the camera on my belly so I can jump out easily if I see something I like, and sometimes put the M11 in the cup holder on a roadtrip. The UV is worth protecting my Summilux lenses, even if I take a bit of a quality hit. All the photos in every gallery I have (including this video) had a UV filter on. I think they're just fine. Hope this helps!
@botant500
Ай бұрын
@@davidherring Thanks for the reply! I use a UV - they make a great substitute for a lens cap on a rangefinder to avoid forgetting you have an actual lens cap on - but always wondered if I was losing a little something IQ-wise. But your shots tell me to stop worrying. Again, thanks for the reply!
If 35 mm is not enough, simply take 3 pictures in portrait format next to each other and join them later. This will give you a wider angle of view. You can then crop the resulting panorama as you wish, as it has a very high resolution anyway.
@davidherring
Ай бұрын
I know this is common in landscape photography, I've just never felt like 35mm isn't enough (except in rare cases where, given the planning I had done, I brought the lens I'd want to use).
