Chasing Giants Episode

Live from the 2022 Master Class, Dr. Bronson Strickland joins Don and Terry to discuss his research with managing and understanding whitetail deer. A lot of time is spent discussing antler restrictions and key management practices like supplemental feeding. Great questions from the live audience.

In regards to the mushroom question I would venture to say that in a low forage quality environment mushrooms may be the highest in protein and nutrients. I know that’s one of the reasons I select them for my diet as a good source of minerals and nutrients.

Question for Dr. Strikland. Last year the farmers combine was not set properly where I hunt and littered a 30 acre field with whole ears of corn everywhere, the deer never fed in that field all winter, not once, I have noticed the past 10 years especially, that the deer no longer feed in shelled corn fields. It seems the deer just dont like the corn anymore. The gmo grains have caused negative side effects for humans, too much gluten. Do you think the deer are also having issues with the gmo corn sense they no longer eat it? Also, here in Indiana, the DNR and regulations on deer are pathetic, like Kentuckys, but Indiana would absolutely be the top 1 or 2 states with regards to boone and crockett entries if the Deer managment and regulations were pro deer instead of pro kill.

On the very last question on no brow tines. I think the obvious answer would be to not shoot a good brow tine buck if you have the opportunity. and this would be something you might want to get the neighbors on board with.

Big fan of Don and Dr. Strickland. I think Doc was being as diplomatic as possible when discussing state DNRs. Here in MS, where he works at MSU, we have a “wildlife commission.” They aren’t biologists and for the most part have zero knowledge of our natural resources. They get recommendations from the biologists and ignore them if they affect how liberal our hunting laws are. They are the reason baiting is legal in the state, crossbows are allowed from 10/1-1-31, 2.5 months of high powered rifle season and not having a tagging system. One of the old commissioners had a high fence property and that has a lot to do with the more liberal regulations/laws we have now. We need physical tags and check stations. The biologists catch a lot of flack, and it is far from fair. Crossbows and baiting have had a huge negative impact on the quality of hunting. Folks just bait all summer and hop in a tripod or ladder stand on opening day of archery and put a bolt in a mature buck. Plus the woods are getting pressured WAY more than they used to be before the rut. Our woods are slap full of hunters for 2.5 months BEFORE the rut begins. Let that sink in. And then add in the fact that MDWFP has no clue how many deer are actually killed. NWTF, DU and Delta Waterfowl look out for the ANIMAL. No whitetail organization down here does anything for the animal, only the hunter. QDMA has great recommendations, but they aren’t very vocal about laws that hurt the overall quality of the animal. We need to ignore the folks who like participation trophies, not worry about hurting feelings and places losing business because they can’t sell as much bait, and start thinking about not ruining the future of hunting.

I would like you guys to touch on the topic of having a piebold buck or doe in your herd sometime. These genes can be bad in the antler/body growth correct? Would Don or Terry shoot a doe or small piebold buck if on their property just to keep those genetics at bay? Obviously you cannot eliminate the gene without taking out its ancestors but would it be best to cull piebolds as they appear in the management for large deer? I wish i could have been there to ask this question with Dr Bonson in the room.

Daylight buck movement was not addressed in regards to the moon. Nobody is saying they run around celebrating the moon. They get on their feet during daylight. Bronson says weather doesn't matter either. Do you agree with that?

Virginia has the worst seasons and rules because we are a dog hunting state. They kill everything. It sucks! When it starts to get good , the let all the dogs out and run then to the next county

Great deer talk. But, mixing politics and religion along with it is, to me, disturbing. So I’m out.
