Known Errors:
1 - In the video, I mention that in the previous turn the German tankers were all spotted by random spotting. However, the designer has clarified that tankers do not roll for random spotting. This apparently must be a post-release change, because the rulebook has an example of a tanker rolling for random spotting. (This is hugely important, as it makes the tankers much harder to sink for the allies.)
2 - To the best of what I can glean from Board Game Geek, it looks like neither individual ships nor task forces may move if they conduct a Naval Patrol. I was under the assumption that Task Forces can move and patrol, while individual ships cannot, but this appears to be incorrect.

I mean, this is most definitely a 2-player game, and I'm playing solo mainly to create the videos (which would be super hard to do while playing 2-player), but I'm actually surprised at how enjoyable the single-player experience has been.

The way this game mechanics work make’s solitary play very difficult I would say, this is a game really made for two players. The FOW aspect of this game really make’s it interesting and just like the real Bismarck chase, the German player really need’s the weather to be in it’s favour to have any hope of getting a win. I’ve read a few books on this battle and this game truly help’s understand just how much of a underdog the Kriegsmarine was during this operation. Yes they did sink the Hood but they really could not afford the trading loses of BB against the British. Sure the sinking of the Hood was a moral issue for the British but in reality what was the lost of one BB to them? What was the true advantage were the two CV and the air power the British had. A full game would be fun to see with the weather favouring the German player and some luck to see just how much damage could be done but overall it’s probably a very hard game to win for any German player :-)

Absolutely. I'll comment a bit on the the experience of playing it solo in the upcoming video, but I'm doing this solo in order to make the videos. It's most definitely a 2-player game. But making a good video to show this game while playing it 2-player would be brutally hard and take forever. :)

Thanks, Boomer, I'm glad you've enjoyed it! Once I dug into playing the game it turned out to be a lot easier than I imagined it was going to be. It looked complex, but at heart it's pretty straightforward, and the good rules help a lot. Part 2 should be up this weekend, I'm looking forward to seeing how it turns out too. (I haven't played/recorded it yet.)

Played my first game of this today as the Germans. Scooted north along the Norwegian coast and across to the fog-laden banks off of northeastern Iceland to rendezvous with a tanker. Weather was keeping visibility nailed down and all looked good. Then, as Bismarck and Prinz Eugen were heading west across the top of Iceland an Allied submarine appeared and pumped three torpedoes into the battleship, slowing her and worst of all, jamming her rudder. Then the seas became smooth as glass and the fog burned off. For much of the following day she hammered away at the wayward rudder and actually got it fixed! But it was too late. The Royal Navy had closed in. Still, Bismarck had a lot of fight in her, or so I thought. Only the Prince of Wales, untroubled by any fire control issues, had other plans and laid 5 criticals into Bismarck in one turn, blowing her hull apart in the process!

Aha! Good to know. Thanks, Mike. That must have been added post release? Because there is even an example of a tanker rolling for random spotting in the rulebook on page 21. :) That's hugely influential, as I was wondering how the Germans would ever manage to keep them alive long enough to use them. If I weren't making a video on the game where I wanted to show naval combat, I might have been tempted to keep running northwest with the Germans, but to be honest those tankers are key and likely going to get wiped out. Apparently there has been a rule modification about the tankers post-release, which I think makes a German hunting strategy more feasible. I'll talk about it in the next video. I'm looking forward to the epic battle, hope to play on Wednesday and post on Thursday/Friday.

Wehraboo alert. The Bismarck was a very powerful ship. But not as uber powerful as you fantasise about. She was essentially a modern First World War design. The Germans got lucky with Hood (that battle should have been very close) and unlucky with the rudder. But when it met KGV and Rodney it got absolutely demolished. Didn't even hit any of the British battleships (some light damage to Rodney from near misses and the blast of her own guns). Bismarck was reduced to burning wreckage in return.

Ok as an overview - but quite a few mistakes made that will confuse new folks. Might be worth redoing the video once you get the game down better and change the title from Gameplay on this video to something else like - (Initial Learning Play or something that suggests you are playing and learning as you go - expect mistakes). Mistake example not mentioned was the use of Naval Patrol Markers for the +3 search bonus - the "penalty" for doing this is that the TF or Ship many not move.
