Point Blank V is for Victory Gameplay | Lock 'N Load Publishing | Wargame Historical Game | WW2 | E1
Ойындар
We play a tactical scenario, Canadians vs. Germans behind Juno Beach, with Point Blank V is for Victory, the World War 2 card-based tactical historical game (boardgame) from Lock 'N Load Publishing and designed by Sean Druelinger.
Known Errors:
1 - When Sgt. Tremlay and the Canadian squad move laterally, I should not have set them to "spent" status, because they moved from a road terrain. I thought the road bonus only applies when you move into a road, but it's when you move from a road, which they did. (Thanks to the designer for pointing this out.)
2 - I wondered whether the shaken Canadian squad would get the -2 DRM on their rally check because there were in smoke, which is blocking. The answer is no, smoke is not treated as terrain, so units don't get a -2 DRM on rally checks while in it.
3 - At the end of the episode, the Canadian infantry squad stuck in the wire deployed smoke to the sector to their north. This was incorrect, because you can only deploy smoke to adjacent areas when smoke is combined with a movement action. When just deploying smoke, it can only go into the sector you are currently in.

Fantastic work and MEGA thanks for getting Point Blank onto the table! I am looking forward to see who gets to spend the night in the farmhouse :)

Thanks, Sean! Thanks for making such a fun game! :) And yes, I'm curious to see how this ends up. If the Canadians can get off a good shot with the PIAT, I think that could tip the scales, but they might have to survive some machine gun fire first. That unresolved terrain between the Canadians in the wire and the Farmhouse could make a big difference too. If the Canadians could find good cover there, that'd really help. Conversely, if they end up in a stream or something, well, that'll be tough to recover from. So far, the Canadians have been a bit geographically challenged, too, unable to reconnoiter any of their advance. They need to take a few minutes to scout ahead, but Sgt. Tremlay's lack of skill in this area is really hurting them.

I think they are making good progress. If they get close enough with to maybe shake the German units they can finish them off with a melee. Looking forward to the conclusion :)

The Canadians are doing much better than when I tested this with US Airborne. : ) The paratroopers failed to drop smoke and got torn apart in a clearing. Couldn't rally, then got hit again for casualties. It was a mess.
I absolutely love this game. It's a great system, and the DYO Scenario system allows you to quickly set up whatever scenario you have in mind. The game constantly presents you with exciting situations, even if you are replaying a scenario you have played multiple times. BTW, I never even unfolded the map. After playing without the map, I realized that the game took up less space without it.
@ZillaBlitz

I'm really dialed into this one, too. And I totally agree on the replayability of even identical scenarios. The way the terrain and recon play out can mean that the same scenario is completely different the next time you play it. And that's interesting on the map, I might try that at some point, too. I tend to like the map for the videos, though.
I loved playing this game. It was on my table for 8 weeks and I played several scenarios. It's a keeper and is 100% one of my Desert Island Games

Ha, that's great! I can easily see this one staying on a table for that long. :) It's taken time and effort to learn the game, one of the more challenging games I've learned. I'll talk more about the complexity in the review, but it's definitely something to consider when approaching the game.
Love how you rolled your own scenario. This would be a great way to teach this game.

Thanks! It's so easy to create scenarios with this system. Additionally there is a DYO system where each unit has a point cost, so you can match sides by point total and use that as well. If I were learning the game now, I would actually just start with 2 squads vs 2 squads, no leaders or anything. Then add a leader to each side. Then add a machine gun. Lather rinse repeat until all the pieces are in place.
This is fantastic, you create an amazing narrative whilst explaining the game. Love it and thankyou.

I have been looking forward to this. I got excited about the game during the Kickstarter but I realized very quickly after I got it that it wasn't for me. Great video, Zilla! This game looks like a lot of fun! I will certainly consider it for my own collection. The Canucks will probably have to advance through woods next so I guess they’ll be getting a defensive benefit for that, plus dropping that smoke was brilliant. I give them a good chance at kicking the Germans out of that farmhouse! One note FYI. I think Sgt. Tremlay’s name is a misspelling. More likely he has the French Canadian surname of Tremblay (pronounced Trom-blay). It’s a very common name in the province of Quebec and many Tremblays served valiantly in WWII. It’s not important to the play of the game but I thought you might be interested. Anxious to see how our boys make out in part 2!
@ZillaBlitz

Thanks, Stephen! I'm actually wishing that as the Germans I had taken that other clear terrain instead of the woods, then they could drop that in front of the Canadians to give them no cover on the assault. But the Germans will have a bit of time while the Canadians sort out the wire, so perhaps they can still make things tough on the Canadians. Surviving an MG at range 1 in the open would be tough for the Canadians. We'll see how it goes though. :) And that makes sense, on the name, for sure. I think I actually added a B by mistake a couple of times because it seemed the more common name to me, although I had the pronunciation wrong in any case. I might switch it up to Trom-blay in the next episode. :) The next episode should get heated fast, not much space left, and the Canadians are closing in fast. :)
Great video! This looks like such a cool game.

Thanks, Peter! I was wondering how the level of explanation is, so I'm happy to hear that it seems to be at a good level. I feel like too much explanation and things bog down, but too little and it's hard for someone without the game to know what's going on, so hitting that sweet spot is always challenging. There are some concepts like Line of Sight that I'll talk a bit more about in the next video.
Thank you for the video. I have the game waiting to be opened... I had the impression that it was more procedural, but thanks to your playthrough I start to see its high narrative potential. Maybe I will spend these Christmas holidays in beautiful Normandy. :)

The fluid terrain system takes some time to get used to and wrap your head around, and when I was reading the rules about it, I was ... skeptical. But in action I really like the terrain system, for a lot of reasons, and one of them is how it spawns narrative.

30:52 Regarding placing the smoke I think that when you are using smoke (it was successfully placed) you cannot use terrain card at the same sector. Rules Page 51 Note: Smoke may be placed into the Sector where no terrain exists. Em I right?
@ZillaBlitz
Жыл бұрын
I'm on the road so I don't have access to the rules/game, but I believe you still drop terrain down in a location when you move into it, regardless of whether there is smoke there or not. You might be able to drop smoke into a hex without terrain, but when you move into a location you still have to resolve terrain. Smoke, per se, isn't terrain.
Ps: have you made an unboxing video about this game? I would like to see "what's inside the box of the core set" or if it has expansions; and if it has them, what each of its expansions do offer in terms of cards, mechanics and tokens or new rules and such

@ZillaBlitz
Жыл бұрын
Hahaha! Absolutely, Farming Simulator '44. 😂
Good game but I have a bit of a problem with the terrain dynamic. At the end you draw the wood and you could place it in front of the farm for defence, however that is a bit silly. This wood just appeared for that particular phase in front of the farm, then the previous fire from the farm in the other phase did not make sense…not sure if I am explaining this the correct way?
@seandruelinger1950
Жыл бұрын
Hello Yes terrain is abstracted and it represents a dynamic battlefield where units are continually moving around to different terrain, shadows or angles. If you are familiar with hex and counter games think of a sector as a collection of hexes and not just a single piece of the battlefield. Thank you Sean
@steveoverton7715
Жыл бұрын
Yes, terrain is abstract. Think of the terrain in relation to small patches and not a blanket. So, what you get when you have woods may only be three trees and not thirty.
24:35 when the infantry unit is incited the move order is it spotted? I think you should also add the spotted chip on the units in A2, is not it?

I'm traveling at the moment so I don't have access to the game or the rules, but I don't think you need to drop a spotted marker on that unit because it's in a road and therefore automatically spotted anyway.
