Even rappers in the Korean hip-hop scene often answer "IU" to the question, "Who is the best in Korean hip-hop?" Agree, this has to thanks to her initial 6 years debut period that her company has put her into all kind of different genre of songs, so that she pick up a tons of different technique throughout the journey. Then when she renew her contract at her 23 after she finish her initial 7 years debut contract, she has accumulate sufficient skillset for her to produce her own song and planned out her discography And even start her age series songs like Twenty Three(23yo, P.S she got another song called 23 which ain't her age series, instead used as her OST song for her to sing in the drama called Producer where she play as an idol too), palette(25yo), and Eight(28yo) and perhaps (i'm not sure because she never confirm this song as one of her age series too) Lilac (29/30yo not sure which because Korea just change their age counting system this year).

plus, she writes song since she was around 18-19 years old. the first song that she writes is "Hold my hand" release in 2011.

If you have noticed, the encore song is a song from 2011. At that time IU had a far more "technically correct" way of singing with the support and the fuller voice you talked about. So she can absolutely sing that way whenever she wants to. The songs she made in her 20s were mostly ones she wrote herself and the breathy style of singing she has throughout the video is a completely artistic choice she made and has also stated that she worked hard to develop that style for herself. Regardless of her technique there is something about her voice that really speaks to me and even if there are obviously way more "powerful" singers out there, she is my absolute favorite one solely for that reason.

To think that her encores last another 1-2hours after the concert is over, is mindblowing to me. How doesn't she strain her voice?!?!?

Actually IU sounds better live than the studio recording and she rearranged the songs to suit the band as she performs live with her own band. The last encore song was an ost song she wrote for the drama The Greatest Love when she was 17. It went viral recently when the concert performance was released on KZread because of her cute action. It charted again😄

IU is the best example of how "Best Singers need not be best at singing", It is not about having great range, belting, support etc , but how smartly one uses the voice to present the song in the most evocative manner Her "Love Poem" has been covered by some fantastic vocalists like Sohyang, Ock Joo Hyun - when they sing, it is their vocal mastery that's prominent, but when IU sings, the song & its emotions are prominent. And since she writes most of her work, she does customize the lyrics, the consonants, enunciation to fit her own unique delivery

In one of her interviews she talked about how she intentionally uses "Fricative" sounds, which singers typical tend to avoid. Hence her style of "breathy singing". She talked about retaining a bit of saliva to achieve effects etc. So yes, whatever be the opinion about her singing, it is definitely planned to sound that way and not an accident or limitation.

The lyrics are an important part of IU's art - she chooses the consonants and vowels to make the melody sound natural, to make a rhythm, and a mood - it's like having an extra musical instrument. And there is the meaning, poetry, and cleverness in the actual words. Following the lyrics (which is possible in English too) helps you see why she makes the choices of different vocal tones for different phrases within a song. It is all deliberate, which is why it is so consistent.

If you want more technically amazing vocal of her, plz listen these songs: - Lost child - Secret - Dear name - Above the time - Rain drop - Good day IU's songs are easy to listen to, but there are many songs that are very difficult to sing. This is because it is very difficult to create a way of expressing the content and emotions of the lyrics and the color of the vocals.

You are right, sometimes it's not about how powerful or technical the vocals. The reason why IU is so love especially in Korea is because of how she sings which touches the heart with the lyrics she wrote for all her songs and Koreans appreciated how poetic her lyrics is as someone has pointed out.

Everything IU does with her singing (and acting, for that matter) is intentional. When she breathes, when she hits a certain consonant, or holds a note. Everything is very, very specific to delivering the intended feeling to the audience. She's not trying to show off her pipes - she's telling you a story and inviting you, guiding you, along for the ride. Easily my favorite vocalist and one of the best songwriters in South Korea. EDIT: Ironically, the song she sang as the encore is one she wrote and performed when she was 18. So it predates any of the other songs she sang during the video. Once again proving that she isn't trying to impress you... but it doesn't mean she can't. Please react to more of her songs, as some of her best songs weren't even included in this. Dear Name and Love Poem, in particular, are stupidly good.

Hi, guys... Now I recommend you see it live on stage... Tour love poem or My sea which was the last video he uploaded of his Iconic recital last year. Soloist from the beginning with no one to support her. Only she in that demanding industry... The IU Legend. Many may come who leave their groups looking to be soloists later. Honestly that Taylor Swift comparison is apt. It's not that IU has this crazy amazing voice, but because she writes and is involved in the production of her songs they fit her voice perfectly. IU’s My Sea live from her Golden Hour Concert is also an amazing performance. The last song she sang was actually a soundtrack for a tv series. She has a history of singing soundtracks for a number of Korean dramas and those usually does a better job at showcasing her vocal ability and range.

She is not retired from singing! But she is a little bit more careful now, since she went to a doctor and they figured out something when she said everytime she sings a higher note that forces her vocal chords, IU said her ears would start ringing, and the doctors said that her eardrums were getting irritated, and could even explode if she kept singing with no treatment!!! (I'm pretty sure this was an IU's vlog, but I do not remember if in Vlive, KZread, or she only posted on tiktok and such, I watched a snip of it on tiktok, in a fan account of hers, and she really seemed in a lot pain, that was, I believe, a little after her album Lilac)

you guys are honestly so insightful! you mentioned about knowing and understanding yourself as an artist instead of comparing yourself to others, but that’s actually one of the things iu said to one of her fans when it comes to writing your own music: do something you like, and find people who like that :) also about her being meticulous, one of her closest producer friend said that iu is so good at hearing every bend and sigh, and she knows why something sounds good. it’s a shame she developed a hearing problem recently and had the risk of hearing loss, but she said she’s feeling better so best wishes to her!

What i absolutely adore about IU is she has such a complete mastery in her voice. Every song she sings and produce, she sings it w ease because she knows what the song need. Her technique and methods in singing is amazing, she can change techniques in a heartbeat. I've noticed both the videos you have reacted to have not had IU in a good condition (for Good Day, it was the last song she sang after a full day of recording; for Killing Voice, she had flu on the day of recording but still turned up and gave her best). And also I love her "hissing", she is literally known for that. I think it's absolutely beautiful and what made me fall in love with her. And obviously it did her no harm because she is singing like that since 2008. We all know what she is capable of and how developed her voice is in all the areas. She could easily leave out the "hissing" but that just wouldn't be her. No hissing = no IU.

I really love IU and her music, so when my sibling said IU's voice didn't stand out to her, at first I was flabbergasted, but I think after watching yalls video, I get what she was saying. I think what makes IU stand out to me is how she changes her voice tone to emote- the emotionality in her songs are so strong, fluid, heartwarming, and can be so sorrowful. Her songs bring out emotion, and her voice conjures that emotion from herself to all of us. (esp in her concerts!) TLDR... its a vibe. lol
