I'm not sure how to emphasis this especially for us non-korean speakers, but IU sings with so much clarity, with proper enunciation but without losing the emotion. There's just a handful of her songs that are sung differently like BBI BBI.

She doesn't have the ultra-high volume that Diva should have, The reason why she is loved all over the world, including Korea, is because of her excellent sensitivity to move people's emotions through her lyrical voice and songs. Sometimes it should be rated higher in terms of art than in singing skills.

That's very true, no matter how good you get at singing skills, if you're singing without soul, or trying to impress people with your singing skills, it's just an incomplete performance that's easily forgettable, the emotion you convey will stick to the listener for a long time if not forever. IU understand the song she's performing, that's why she's able to make changes to her songs and able to elevate emotions, it's better when you understand the lyric and the choice she made in her singing, such as the beginning of Through the Night, she begin with using her talking voice to get a more intimate feeling, because it is a really intimate song that the listener (lover in the story) can listen to her heart.

IU is an experience singer, but what makes her exceptional and beloved by Korean are her public image in Korea, and her attention to detail in her music. Putting IU's public image aside, her talent in creating expressive music and understand how to craft them for her listeners are what a true artist should be. Talking only about IU's singing skill doesn't do her justice, any skilled singer can sing her songs, but not every singer can perform her music and create the level of sensation IU was capable of.

Something that should be pointed out to a lot of vocal coaches reacting to Korean singers is that Korean is definitively a breathy language, with heavy aspirations built into certain consonants and speech patterns. Korean pop music kind of favors singers with breathy or even raspy voices (maybe as a result of language influencing culture preferences), and its usually a stylistic choice even if perceived as imperfect technique by western standards.

two or three things : 1.that list of songs is special, bcs they are VERY well known song in S.Korea, like "people's song". Especially Friday, Meaning of You, Through The Night, and Autumn Morning. Palette and 23 are the song ppl listen on their bday on 23/ 25 years old. Blueming, Through The Night, Lilac are awards winning songs ... In short, its a golden list, even non-fans in S.Korea will know them. 2.IU is an example of real "idol" in japan/ korea music industry. Japan - S.Kor idol's definitions are a bit different, in Japan people love the sincerity and effort more, so as long as they are lil bit cute, but have a endearing persona and potential, people will love them. In S.Korea people/ fans give more emphasize to "skill". Idol need to have better skill to debut, to dance, to sing etc. IU is somewhere in the middle of that concept, she has that sweet spot of being "perfectly imperfect" and "imperfectly perfect" entertainer, and has that sincere - lovely personality since the start of her career. 3.IU is a hardworking artist. She has a career on music, songwriting, actress, model, and MC (at least). Its a miracle we still see her active now, its a miracle she still works so hard right now. In this setting, she's not on her 100% bcs she got a bit of flu/ rhinitis (her voice is a bit different), and she's on a very busy schedule. In short, she's not an exclusive singer - "singer", and yes, maybe this is not an excuse, but I think seeing iu is like seeing how much you can push your limit as a celebrity/ entertainer. She doesnt need to try this hard, actually she already beyond success since 2017 maybe? She can retire in 2017 and still considered a legend in industry ... This back to my point no.2 above : she's idol/ artist and there are so much context behind her "performance" and fans seeing her as an "existence" and "memory". Ofc, I understand you are music/ vocal teacher and you video is indeed abt this VERY moment in Killing voice, but I just want to add those context(s) :) Anyway, thank you :)

Please do react to Taeyeon and Ailee's Killing Voice as well!! T-T And I think these two (Taeyeon & Ailee) will give you two a different perspective of how different IU sings from the way Taeyeon and Ailee sings, as Taeyeon and Ailee are such powerful vocalists and yet more like pop classical where they use their head voice without going into a whispery territory unlike IU. You're very much right in the sense that IU does a lot of these very stylistic whisper-singing in a lot of her songs, she's a very stylistic singer due to the type of songs she often composes and writes, which aim to speak to an audience intimately hehe : Like, for example, 밤편지, which was written to be almost like a diary exploring how love would truly be like or what defines love. She does all these very introspective songs, and speaks a lot to herself and her audience, which is probably why she chose the very stylistic way of singing

I love your analysis of her use of consonants & vowels, and her use of breathiness. It is not just style though. You can tell songs with her own lyrics because the sounds she choose form an element of the music in themselves - they'll be flowing or rhythmic, hard or breathy as appropriate. But, even more important, she chooses them always to express the emotion/ideas she wants to put across. It's never accidental or for show.

Thank you for doing an honest review for IU's Killing Voice. I love how to explain her vocal techniques. Honestly, she's well loved in South Korea, and other parts of the world too. The reason why we love to listen to her is that, you don't need to know the lyrics translation for you to feel her songs. She will deliver the emotion 1000000% -- and like a warm embrace in a cold night, you'll know that she's there, knowing your emotions in a totally distant way possible, but also hearing and listening to your life sentiments. She has never missed a chance to make her UAENA's (IU's fan's club name) feel loved, and heard. I am personally been saved by her music every time I am feeling lonely. But when I listen to her, all I know is that I have someone who is willing to encourage me to keep going, and that life will get better if I hold on a little more. I've watched her concert when she goes on her Asia Tour in the Philippines -- I literally cried countless times because listening to her singing live is a dream come true. Thank you for reading until here.

I think u guys misunderstood what IU was saying when she said she was awkward. I'm sure for someone like IU who has sell out concerts every single day... she has the confidence to sing for her audience no matter how she felt that day... What she meant was singing songs which she wrote in her early twenties; about her early twenties, when she was approaching her 30s that was awkward.

When I think of IU I don‘t think of her as a singer first and foremost. I think of her as a storyteller. She writes her own songs and she uses music and singing as her medium but it‘s all to convey a story. And to me her singing reflects that. It feels like listening to a story. It‘s not „look at me and my belly high note“, it‘s more subtle and she not at all trying to be this type of singer from what I can tell. I believe that’s what makes her endearing and different to listen to than other artists :) Her stories and her singing feel relatable.

IU IS THE QUEEN OF KPOP. She's a singer song-writer and mostly famous for her diverse genres, (especially korean music from the 80s and 90s), and emotions as well as very ambiguous, poetic lyricism. Also, she wasn't feeling awkward singing a song she wrote in her 20s I think because of the language barrier you guys perhaps misunderstood the atmosphere. It was more just nervousness of starting, I believe. She was the one who made Killing Voice very famous and after her, more famous artists started to appear in the show.

In terms of sustainability i can totally see what you guys mean with that hiss of air being there often. she has had 8 concert tours so far in her career where the longest had 13 shows. Her concerts are really long. The last concert she had called the golden hour under the orange sun lasted for 3hours and 30 minutes. she performed around 30 songs on that concert wich is a normal amount of songs for her shows. she once in one of her pallette interviews that she does not strain her voice while singing. anw loved you video and thanks so much for reacting to this queen.

Might be fun to check out the songs “Through The Night” and “Palette” again. I’m slighty biased as that are my favorite songs or hers tho😂 The whispy, airy voice she has is basically what she’s known for, but i would be interested to see if the huskyness(?) in her voice is the same as in Killing Voice in a different performance of hers

She has soft yet powerful voice. No one can tell at first she was suffering a bad cold that day. Why didn't you have turned on English subtitles. You have missed a beautiful journey of lyrics in through the night song. As a uaena thanks for reaction and I'll come back for part two.

I'm only two third into the vid so i might end up eating my words, but hey, it sounds like you guys came in with expectations of popular singer = powerful explosive voice. Thats why you guys kept mentioning about "waiting for something to happen". She's popular in korea and in the kpop community not becos of the common western type of scream-shout voice. Her voice is great, her pronunciation is smth older folks love to praise, but most importantly it's the person she is. She's famously a very kind person and well liked not just by fans but also by the industry. Her songs' lyrics touch hearts of many. She has built a good reputation throughout this more than 10years of career. She tops charts not becos she sounds like adele or someone else, but becos of who she is - IU.

Please react to Forestella, they are crossover quartet group from Korea. They are created through a audition program called Phantom Singer 2 and won the season. It consist of 2 classically trained vocalist, 1 musical actor, and 1 amateur rock singer. They create a lot of cover stage and their renowed cover are: Bohemian Rapsody, Bad Romance, Champions and Shape of You. I really hope to hear your opinions about their technique since half of them are trained opera singers. Thank you Here are the member usual standing position (lef to right): Ko Woo-rim (고우림) - bass Kang Hyung-ho (강형호) - rock, tenor~soprano range Jo Mingyu (조민규) - leader of Forestella, tenor Bae Doo-hoon (배두훈) - musical actor, baritone~tenor range
