Maria Theresa of Spain (1638 - 1683) was Queen of France and Navarre and the first wife of King Louis XIV. She was famous for her virtue and piety. Five of her six children died in early childhood. Her marriage with Louis XIV was rather unhappy because he had but little affection for her, and he had many mistresses.

Thank you for posting, but you got mixed up in the order of the pieces: Luctus de morte is the second piece, and De profundis comes third. Schneebeli quotes Louis XIV as saying after the Queen's death: "C'est la première fois qu'elle me cause du chagrin" "This is the first time she has caused me grief". I think this is a wonderful funeral oration. And as a listener, it's impossible not to darw a parallel between Charpentier's music and Purcell's for the death of Queen Mary. Nothing superficial or circumstantial here, but deep feeling and compassion.
