Charlotte Shooting Latest: AR-15 & .40 caliber handgun found; 4 officers killed, 4 injured

Four officers were killed and four others were injured Monday in a shooting in an east Charlotte neighborhood. Three members of the U.S. Marshals Task Force died in the shooting, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Johnny Jennings, along with a Charlotte police officer. The four officers killed were identified as:
Charles Thomas Weeks, a U.S. Marshal assigned to the Fugitive Task Force
Samuel "Sam" Poloche, with the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction
William "Alden" Elliot, with the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction
Joshua Eyer, a 6-year veteran of the Charlotte Police Department
The Charlotte Police Department held a news conference about the shooting at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, featuring remarks from Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles, Gov. Roy Cooper, Attorney General Josh Stein and Ronald Davis, director of the U.S. Marshals Service.
"Today is an absolute tragic day for the city of Charlotte and for the profession of law enforcement," Jennings said. "Today we lost some heroes that are out to just simply try to keep our community safe."
Jennings said officers were attempting to serve a warrant Monday to 39-year-old Terry Clark Hughes, Jr., for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon at a home near the 5000 block of Galway Drive.
"When they approached that individual, they were met with gunfire," Jennings said. "Officers returned gunfire and struck the victim, who was later pronounced deceased in the front yard of the residence."
During Tuesday's news conference, Jennings said Hughes fired at officers from the upstairs of the home in both the front and the back.
Hughes was wanted for possession of a firearm by a felon and felony flee to elude (two counts) out of Lincoln County, North Carolina. Jennings said Hughes was shot down in the front yard of the home, where he died.

America has close to 2 million citizens incarcerated, more than any other country except China. High incarceration rates does not increase public safety. America is about funding the military industrial complex instead of funding schools. Lack of decent schools to educate all Americans is the issue.

This guy is a convict with a record for illegal gun charges and they just go knock on his door in broad daylight and take no precautions whatsoever. WTF

He was able to acquire them because of how non-existent oversight laws are for gun possession. Too much access and no requirements for proof of safe storage means that the illegal gun trade is flourishing. It's simply too easy for someone to turn 18 and start trading legally purchased guns on social media. We also allow people who are undergoing treatment for severe mental health issues, meaning there is a paper trail demonstrating that they have severe mental illness, to purchase firearms without any oversight. This is what happens when you treat a complex, nuanced subject with a black-and-white perspective. It's not "This, or that." The solution will have to be as complex and nuanced as the problem, but it DEFINITELY INCLUDES GUN LAWS.

VICTIMLESS alcohol-related traffic offenses eternally and forever remove 2-A rights. (By Nexus with Federal law) The Victimless DUI convictions I had received were nearly 50 years ago! (ALL, VOID OF ACCIDENT, INCIDENT OR VICTIM) ... After serving (6) years as a United States Marine during the Iranian crisis (1979) returning to civilian life was confusing … Many Marines at the time weren't as fortunate having decided to take their own lives. (23/Marines commit suicide every day, at that time!). Alcohol was my relief for PTSD nearly 50 years ago before having my own family, children, and grandchildren! (Never drugs) I served my country as a proud United States Marine (Honorably Discharged) and can no longer own or possess even a single bullet for life ... Victimless DUI laws allow taxpayers to keep their driver's license, vehicle, and voting rights but not the 2-A Right to protect life, family, wealth, and home! Texas & other states allow felons including "DUI felons" with injured parties, to legally possess firearms within their home 5 years after conviction. Without a victim, accident, or damaged party, the 2nd Amendment "Right" should never be eternally abrogated! (THAT'S JUST CRAZY) - USMC (Semper Fidelis) SGT E-5 (5811)

4 questions reporters won't ask and cops wouldn't have answered 1. Was the shooter a former sniper? 2. What do you blame other than the shooter for that many cops getting shot doing something they are trained to do and knew worse case scenario before they got there ? 3. After seeing the condition of the front and back of the house Isn't it possible that there was crossfire or was the shooter just that darn good? 4. Do you always form task forces from local and federal agencies to serve a warrant for a class D felony? 5. BONUS QUESTION Why wasn't Homeland Security and the CIA involved Are they still busy finding and destroying evidence at P Diddys properties?

For explaining the torn-out condition of the house, I suspect either explosives or a vehicle-mounted tool like a ram or a hook. About 20 years ago a guy shot and killed two Michigan State troopers at the front door of his house. Subsequently they placed a bomb at his front door and blasted their way in. The guy had previously jumped out a back window and it took several more days to catch him.

Felons and some people with mental health issues are not really big followers of the law, so expecting them not to try to get guns is moronic, surely it is up to society to make it all but impossible for people who have no right to have a gun from having a gun.

North Carolina state records show Hughes was convicted of breaking and entering in Person County, which is north of Raleigh-Durham, in 2010. He spent approximately six months in prison before being released in May 2011. Hughes was arrested in June 2012 after a high-speed chase in Alamance County, which is east of Greensboro and west of Raleigh-Durham. Deputies said Hughes led them on a chase at speeds over 100 mph after turning around to avoid a checkpoint. At the time, he was wanted on several warrants in numerous counties for failing to appear in court. He spent nearly a year in prison for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and speeding to elude arrest. Hughes was arrested by CMPD on multiple drug charges in May 2021. He was also charged with fleeing or eluding arrest with a motor vehicle. He was released from jail hours later, records show.

The way they get treated and the bullshit they have to tip toe around on a daily basis is fucking absurd and it will only get worse from here. I hope people are ready to keep hearing about these incidents because it's now inevitable. Rip to the fallen officers..

This is a perfect example of the destructive tactics of law enforcement in this country. There should be no doubt in anyone's mind this destuctive incident did not need to occur. Four men died because of the methods these law enforcement people use. This did not have to happen. One man could have been taken into custody in any number of different ways.

The Marshall is talking like this was a success. It's obvious they failed fatally to plan. The arrest warrant would have never allowed them to enter the house. What were they thinking? This is not an example of the best. This is an example of the worst. The best would have apprehended this man without a shot fired. The best would not have gone after him in his home. The best would have waited until he was observed outside of his house. There are too many things here that don't make sense. I would like to see the warrant in detail. who was the decision maker that decided to execute the warrant at the home?

This was a violent felon who was prohibited from owning firearms and ammunition. Criminals don't care what laws say they can't own, do, etc. criminals will always have weapons, magazines, ammunition they are not allowed to own. They will always do whatever they can to make certain they are well armed with weapons and magazines . They steal these weapons from law abiding citizens, by robbing gun stores, and by trading drugs on the streets for weapons with other criminals. Creating gun laws that make it illegal for law abiding citizens to own these same weapons the criminals have puts every law abiding citizen in danger. It puts families in danger.
