(June 19, 2021) Jermall Charlo retained his WBC World Middleweight title and improves to 32-0 (22 KOs) following a dominant unanimous decision victory over rugged Juan Macias Montiel.
Undefeated WBC Middleweight World Champion Jermall Charlo successfully defended his title with a unanimous decision shutout victory over courageous challenger Juan Montiel in an action-packed night of boxing Saturday night live on SHOWTIME from Toyota Center in Houston, Texas in a Premier Boxing Champions event.
Charlo and Montiel both played an equal part in the electrifying main event that capped off a special Juneteenth Day boxing celebration. Charlo threw a career-high 769 punches, yet the gritty, relentless Montiel refused to go down. Instead, Montiel continued to walk forward despite taking incredible punishment, earning Charlo’s respect in the process for his guts and character.
Charlo landed more than twice the amount of punches as Montiel (258-127), including a career-high 201 power punches. Montiel miraculously survived a grueling sixth round, despite being on the receiving end of 36 punches landed, a majority of them thrown with malice behind them.
In the eighth round, Charlo suffered the first cut of his career as Montiel continued to return punches and opened up a gash over Charlo’s right eye. Still, Montiel was far out-classed in terms of boxing ability and athleticism. Despite being unable to close the show in front of the raucous hometown crowd, Charlo displayed his well-rounded game, using a variety of punches to deliver shot after shot on Montiel.

Charlo had the better skills, but Montiel had power in his left hand with everything he threw. There’s a reason Montiel’s wins were all knockouts. A battle between two wills who don’t know how to quit. Great fight!

This was a lame asss fight and the only fight he took that year. It ain’t hate, who is Montiel and who’s radar is he on. Stop ducking. Meanwhile, his brother is undisputed and Jermall ain’t even got two belts still to this day. GGG, Canelo, Benavidez, Plant, Saunders, any of the other belt holders..? Nope. He’d rather go to jail.
Jermall is soo skilled I don't understand why he doesn't want to fight top level competition he probably could beat them all. He obviously has some serious confidence issues, he is the polar opposite to his brother who has bucket loads of confidence

I couldn't believe it when I first saw Montiel. No way could he stand with Charlo. He looks much smaller and nothing about him looks like he has any power. I have to say that he fooled me a bit. He has a better punch than I expected and he's tough as hell despite that he took a lot from Charlo. He's the kind of guy that would embarrass the hell out of you in front of your girlfriend if you were a big bully and challenged him in a bar some night. Don't let a guy fool you because he's thin, some guys can knock your head off and their size can be deceiving.

I don’t like how Jermall looked in this fight, didn’t look special. I think he’s plateaued skill wise, he was the better Charlo at the beginning but now You can tell he’s not getting better like Spence and Jermell.

I’ll give it to Montiel, he’s one hell of a fighter. His durability was insane this fight. Charlo outclassed him in every single way and that lead to the victory, but I gotta give Montiel respect for going all 12 with an amazing fighter.

But much to my surprise, I find increasingly that “boxing fans” are amongst the most fickle, bigoted, ignorant and horrendously prejudiced people one can ever meet! I began to notice that the audience in the arena would quite often root for the white or Hispanic boxer , especially when they fight Black American boxers ! From Ali to Mayweather to the Charlo brothers, they have all suffered boos and jeers from boxing audiences! In fact, the more successful the Black boxer is, the more hate he has to deal with! This trend disappointingly spreads to the social media fora ! Since Korobov lost to Jermall Charlo, he has since lost two more fights, both stoppages! Charlo, on the other hand , has won all four more additional fights since! So who is a fraud then?

Charlo was gassed after the 5-6th rounds, no way Montiel should have made it past the 7th. I can't honestly rank Charlo on par with Spence and Crawford. Either of them would have been smart/strong enough to finish him when he punched himself out...
