I work in the heating and plumbing industry in Ireland. My work brings me in contact with close on 200 plumbers what I've noticed down the years the best plumbers I know have no papers (Fas craft certificate here in Ireland) and the worst quality plumbers i can think of have ever bit of paper can be had. Quality and workmanship a trades of person is almost purely down to individual and to a lesser extent knowledge and mentality of them that train these apprentices..

I agree, lots of guys think qualifications make them the best, but it’s just not true. I’ve been a large Employer & an employee. It’s down to personality, lots of guys can talk a good game, but when it comes to getting their head down & arse up, they just moan & whinge. Depending on the type of work of course, but making good money in any walk of life comes down to working hard. If you run a Plumbing & Heating company, it’s 100 times more difficult than you’d think. As Chas said; to get anywhere in the Trade, you need to employ people. However, Man Management is the hardest part of Management. I’m 50 years in the Trade, still working & loving it. It’s the best Trade on the Planet. You learn something new every day & you’re paid handsomely along he way. Chas is a fantastic guy & it’s always great to listen to him.

'Transferable skills' from other related jobs, and an aptitude based on genuine interest in the work, seems important. Personally I think I'm a good plumber (obviously not gas), but it's self taught. I don't work as a plumber, but have done my own, and done it for friends houses.
