Charlie & Dali

Charlie and Dali are infant Moustached Monkeys who were surrendered to the Zoo in Cameroon's capital Yaoundé, just 48 hours apart from each other. Charlie was left on their doorstep in a filthy cardboard box. Dali was handed in by a well-meaning man who had purchased her at a market to save her from being eaten. had purchased this tiny girl at a market. Both babies are recovering in safety at Mefou Sanctuary. In the wild, Charlie and Dali would both still be with their mothers, but at least now they will have each other for comfort and support.

The work you do for these unfortunate primates is commendable, but could you, in your opinion tell me the reason why bushmeat is eaten? Is it hunger? or do people just prefer it to a farmed animal? or is it cash?

Bushmeat is traditionally eaten as a source of protein by forest-dwelling people in Cameroon. Over time, with population expansion and deforestation, more and more people have moved into forest areas to take advantage of hunting. Many people who have grown up eating bushmeat prefer the taste to farmed animals. As larger wild animals like gorillas and chimps have become more rare, and illegal to hunt, bushmeat has become a luxury item, demanded internationally. That drives the prices up and increases the money that can be made by local hunters who otherwise have very low incomes. Babies are taken and sold for significant amounts of money into international wildlife crime rings where money most definitely is the motivation.

Ape Action Africa the international criminal aspect of this makes me so angry! You can understand the cultural eating of bushmeat although if the government has made it illegal perhaps they should take action and eventually perhaps the locals would get the idea and in the end their tastes would slowly change. You can see how complicated it is though because if you introduce farmed animals that introduces forest clearing which destroys these gorgeous apes and other creatures habitat. It seems there’s not necessarily an easy solution. However the trade in animals does make me really angry though, again, in a poor country you can understand the attraction that that amount of money would have to a poor family or local community a local would get. It’s the people who WANT and buy these babies as pets who are the vilest in my opinion. Without someone to buy them the trade would die out. They are horrible, selfish, egotistical people who have no thought for the pain and suffering they cause! 🤯🤬 Having said that, even though I only live on a pension with little left each fortnight, I would love to be able to help and support the incredible work you do with these beautiful, darling though sadly lost and motherless babies and youngsters. Do you have some way I can directly donate to you? Are there other things that you could use other than money? Is there a less public way to communicate with you? I have watch a number of your videos of several different species of ape orphan babies this morning, here in Brisbane, Australia and am so impressed by the dedication and love you all have for them. Bless you all for the work you are doing and the love you are giving and the trust you are teaching these precious little spirits !! 💝💖

Hi d garcia! There are lots of different ways to help us, but the most effective way right now is to join us for Giving Day for Apes - a global giving day where donations not only help us provide care for rescued primates like Charlie & Dali, but could also help us win amazing bonus prize money. Giving Day for Apes takes place on OCTOBER 17, 2017 but is open right now for those who want to make early donations. Our giving page for the event is: givingdayforapes.razoo.com/organization/Ape-Action. Thank you so much!!

So wrong! I will never understand why people are cruel to monkeys or apes. Any animals honestly.
