Today we have Bill Burr, Zach Galifianakis, Gabriel Iglesias, Jimmy Carr, Craig Ferguson, Cecily Strong … there's tons of comedic talent out there today. Maybe they're not your personal taste but I think their talent is equal.

Whats crazy is that i was his next door neighbor for so many years. He was the nicest dude ever- always made those silly noises whenever we greeted each other. Both he and his wife were such nice ppl. Rest in peace Charlie Callas

@Donald Kasper Franks cracking up so much he's crying, that was not fake, when you're laughing so hard you're eyes are tearing its real laughing. I'm guessing you've never found anything to make you laugh that hard, I'm sorry for you. Sitting with your friends cracking jokes like the Dean Martin roasts were all about, I'll grant you that there were several shows that were not too good and there was some fake laughter, but the difference between this hysterical insanity and a fake laughter show was so obvious even helen keller could see the difference.

If people are enjoying it, they'll pipe up with something about "fake laughter," or "the guy was gay" or some other inane thing, trying to get an argument going or just be a tool. Why? No clue, but it happens like clockwork.

Charlie Calas was DEFINITELY an original!!! Man oh man oh man, do I ever miss him! Wherever you are Mr. Calas, I hope you rest in peace! A little sidenote about Charlie Calas. He started out as a drummer during the big band days of music playing with such bands as Tommy Dorsey's, Buddy Rich's, Bernie Cummins', and Claude Thornhill's.

I believe I seen him play on Johnny Carson and he was a very good drummer.

If you are around my age of 55, you had the true privilege of growing up to see the greatest EVER comedians, performers, musicians, and entertainers of all types...These roasts were greatly anticipated, and they were literal events for my family, when I was a kid back in the '70's. And you regularly got to see absolute gold like this from Calas, or from Foster Brooks, or Don Rickles, etc., and it's was such a great gift to all our souls, from all of theirs...

Love the Pac Man sounds at 1:31. Charlie Callas--absolute genius. Unique comedy style that no one will ever duplicate.

I think Charlie Callas is one the greatest comedians in history!

Charlie Callas opened for Frank Sinatra. Saw the act in Philadelphia in the early 80's. OMG this man was hilarious! I don't think there was one empty seat in the old Spectrum.

Love seein' Frankie an' Deansy both in tears on account o' how hard they're laughin'.

@@MrCrowebobby That reminds me of the old talk show days, when they were actually talk shows. I saw one show where Sidney Poitier couldn’t even look at Richard Prior without cracking up. Sidney was dying laughing before Richard was even seated.

Sinatra laughing at the knuckle cracking gag is absolutely priceless. Sweet dreams old timers.

@@dzimidzimo, why use profanity? What about the man’s joke didn’t you either understand or find humorous? The joke is simple, murder and other criminal activity were everywhere such that he couldn’t walk 10 blocks without leaving the scene of some crime. That’s how tough his neighborhood was.

Charlie was the funest. I saw all the Dean Martin roast when they aired back in the 70s. I laughed so hard then it hurt my jars, when I watch them now on KZread I still laugh just as hard.

Here's the most amazing aspect ...... Charlie is friends with Dean and Frank ....... for him to do this routine and keep a straight face (never mind to not break into laughter himself) is beyond incredible..... recall the Carol Burnett Show, where Carol and her cast (especially Corman and Conway) would laugh uncontrollably during their routines....

OMG!!! Charley tore my guts out 40 years ago and he still does. I'm telling ya, it was dangerous to watch a Dean Martin roast... I was sore for days after one of these. God do I miss these days when you could joke to folks that actually had a sense of humor and thick skin.

What amazes me about these roasts is the panel. Just about everyone at the table is a legend. If they were to have made a film together you couldn't afford that cast.

A one of a kind genius. And an Excellent drummer. Most people did not know this.

I used to watch the Dean Martin celebrity roasts when they were first aired Dean had a lot of great guest. Charlie Calais was one of my favorites.

My father worked with Charlie Callas in a theater as one of the attendants. This guy was hilarious 🤣🤣

My jaw is sore from laughing so hard. No matter how many times I watch this.

Ohh what a great time to laugh in an early Tuesday morn with a good cup of coffee. It's so difficult to take a sip while cracking up laughing. Callas was one of those comedian icons we'll never have again nowadays. His stand-up appearances is unforgetable. Wherelse would I want a good laugh?

That moment when he cracked his knuckles made this roast!

This video was in the mid 70's and from what I heard it's from this show that Frank had Charlie start being his opening act in Vegas. I remember as a kid here in Vegas seeing the Caesars Palace marquee of Sinatra with Charlie Callas in 1980 and so on after that.

my just turned 18 yr old son LOVES these old 60s videos. Charlie callas... the CLEAN robin Williams.

Jiffy Jeff the boxer is a great Bob Nelson bit. His football lineup bit, I think, is great too! I know he was a huge admirer of Red Skelton. I see Skelton's style integrated into Nelson's humor. I DEFINITELY see where you're coming from with saying that Jiffy Jeff came from Charlie Callas' comedic style. However, I couldn't tell you whether or not it actually did, I'm sorry to say.

Just the comedians that performed on the Dean Martin Roasts are so far above most of those that pass for comedians today. Charlie Callas, Foster Brooks, Red Buttons, Jonathan Winters and the like were laugh-out-loud funny every time. You can tell how funny they are just by watching Dean and the person being Roasted. No need to use bad language, not when the material is as good as it was. We'll never see anything like this ever again. Thank Heaven that some of it had been preserved! It was funny then and it's funny now!

Charlie Callas never got the credit he deserved. My brother and his son David were the same age and were good friends in Fort Lee, NJ. They both went to Fort Lee High. I remember the time my brother told me when David and him were tossing the football back and forth on David's lawn, Callas' son. They were around 17 and Charlie lived right across the street from the high school. As they were tossing the ball back and forth. I'm laughing just imagining it. Here comes Charlie out the front door doing his silly faces and noises for my brother and his son. They were cracking up. I wish I was there. That had to be priceless. That was in like 75. I knew David as well being him being my brother's friend. The last time I saw David Callis last was August 9th, 1984. It was at the Marriott Riverwatch Cafe on The Fort Lauderdale beach. It was unlimited champagne. My girlfriend and I were there, her 16 and me 17. We were having a good time. Champagne glasses in each hand. I was very surprised to run into him. I asked how his father was doing and after a bit proceeded on. You may asked why the date? Why does this guy or how does this guy remember the date. Well when Maryann and I left the club she was to die no more than 3 hours later while driving my car and I was the passenger. We went off the road at 70 miles an hour. She was ejected as the car flipped over as we hit a the wall of a building. I was thrown from the passenger side to the driver's side as the car flipped on the drivers side before it came to it's final rest upside down. She died on the scene and I was rushed to the trauma center. Where after being stabilized I was informed that I was wrongfully being charged with her death. It only occurred to me now that other than myself. David Callis was the last one to see her alive. RIP Maryann, RIP. Your one and only true love. TS.

I knew him in fort Lee for a short time, only his funniest expression on his face In Burger King near his apartment . My nose, my nose in front of publicly in burger king, people [didnt know him] their expressions [he really belong in mental hospital. So, callas is the funniest comedian in his era.g-d bless him

I agree, this comedy would be attacked by liberal loons today as racist, especially Don Rickles, who was one of the nicest guys you can meet in real life. He was the exact oppisite of his act. The libs would try to destroy him today. RIP Don, Frank, Dean, Charlie Callas, Foster Brooks and the rest of the folks who kept us laughing even now, an eternal gift of laughter.

Miss the good old days ,cappuccino was one of my favorite.

The more I see these roasts, they appear to me like toasts to the finest comedians and artists ever assembled on one dais. Charlie Callas was a master of comedy. "In order to protect myself, I threw myself on her body." 😂😂😂

Ahh thanks for this. I watched some roast vids but I couldn't catch his name. His stand up seems a little flat, but this character stuff is one of the funniest things I have seen. I think they paid him to stay low key. For the brief roast appearances he had the top guns in stitches.

@@CanMav Very few of the old-school guys ever used profanity. They never had to rely on it for filler. Listen to Rickles, Dangerfield, they were brilliant and quick on their feet. They loved the art of comedy too much to ever cuss, even on tour. Absolute talent.

@@CanMav I did see them live... and no, very few of them cussed, and when they did, you remembered it because it was so rare. My original point had to do with their exceptional writing, talent and story telling. They didn't need vulgarity to get laughs. Whether a comedian cusses or not, doesn't bother me.

So funny, great act, great man.

Quality Comedy can't be beaten with foul mouth trash. Had old blue eyes, Martin & Rickles in stitches. Comedic Class from Callas.
