I never heard of Charley. I prefer Zez, James P. and of course Jelly. But they are all so damn good! Thanks for posting this.

I'm gettin' a brain cramp here, trying to analyze these chord progressions. In bar 110, it's A-flat7 (V7) which typically resolves to the tonic of D-flat at bar 111. But then, starting on on the upbeat of 2, there's a chord (inverted) with D-flat, F-flat and A natural. Just what the hail is that? An augmented D-flat minor? Uh, "slpain it by me, Kingfish.

Thanks for doing this and sharing! This makes a fine companion to Tom Brier's 1990s-era sheet music transcription of this piano roll. It appears you have managed to incorporate more detail and phrasing into your transcription, minus the 'impossible' notes (a 'third hand' octave tremolo in the repeat of the A theme, heard in at least one edition of the roll). Did you take this directly from a MIDI of the roll? If so it sounds truly hand played. The version of the roll I've heard with the tremolo is here.: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZqlkrrmFisvTlLg.html I don't own an original of this roll so don't know how many versions were put out, but QRS was notorious for pulling a roll master partway through production and either editing it or substituting another master, resulting in two or more 'versions' or 'editions' of the same roll arrangement issued under the same catalog number ! ! ! I am not aware of any other roll company that did this. I presume it was for quality assurance purposes as well as to help the rolls sell better.

Friend Robert Perry in New Zealand (www.pianola.co.nz) has in his collection an original QRS roll that was actually hand-annotated by either Max Kortlander or Lee S. Roberts (I forget who) in either red pencil or red ink (I forget which), where some of the perforations were circled, and notes written directly on the roll about which notes should be added, taken out or changed. So even after production, some of the head editors weren't always satisfied! I think that roll was either a ballad or a pop song. I seem to recall that the alterations were to the specific chord voicings, in order to make the voice-leading more 'correct' and smoother according to the rules of classical music theory.
