I wasn't happy that Gaethje fought in AZ. To many distractions being in his home state and family ,friends, cousins all over the place. 0-3 fighting here. The crowd amps him up too much then forgets the game plan wanting to try and please the crowd swinging and gassing. He needs to be the Gaethje that fought Tony. But he won't get another shot again. He's going to retire soon.

And I think Charles surprised him by standing toe to toe in the pocket and trading from the start instead of using a grappling heavy approach fixated on takedowns like he thought would happen.

There was a time when Gaethje looked unstoppable in the division. Oliveira made this fight look easy. It was a prime example of a good fight camp in action. Gaethje's leg kicks are like a fundamental part of his gameplan. But Oliveira was so well prepared and able to dodge them in a way that perfectly set him up for a counter, Gaethje's leg kicks turned into a liability. The more he threw them, the more damage he would take. And without leg kicks, Gaethje is mostly a wreckless brawler that Oliveira could pick apart in the first round. It was amazing to watch.

It works so well because he is so good on the ground.Nobody wants to take him down.If your jiujitsu and grappling are not high level muay thai stance can be very dangerous in mma because it makes you prone to takedowns. For charles it doesn t matter.I feel like his skillset is one of the best ever allaround. They merged into one.The only thing missing is a bit tighter defence and headmovement

Worked because Justin wants nothing to do with Oliveira on the ground due to how lethal his BJJ is. I don’t know if he can keep this stance against islams since it provides easier openings to takedowns. Will be interesting to see what happens on the ground since both fighters are so dangerous on the mat

Chute boxing finest...i think Brazil does not get enough credit for evolving some of the finest strikers martial arts in general have seen. They produced some of the greatest Kyokushin, kickboxing champions...Oliveira's chute/muay thai boxing is technicaly really clean and provides him with several ways to pressure his opponent. I was amazed how he used the thai clinch to neutralize the boxer in Dustin Poirier. His blend and transition from striking to grappling is the best the sport of MMA has seen so far. In my oppinion this is where he outshines Khabib, based on the range of attacks he uses. If he becomes more stellar at anticipating punches (he gets hit himself a lot, could be an issue with his eyes though, I think he talked about it himself) he will be become an icon of modern mixed martial arts and how to incorporate all eight limbs into your standing attack while being able to transfer into grappling and submissions effortlessly.
