Traditionally back then, the guests would stay all through the show, sitting there on the couch, perhaps interacting a little bit with the later guests, but mostly just listening. Some guests, especially the Big Names, began saying they had to leave early (some other engagement, an air flight). Often this was true, but it became a habit with certain Big Names, and they practically never stayed for the rest of the show any more. Evidently Dinah Shore had been the earlier guest and left. CNR was saying, what is there to go to at 5:45 pm? The banks, dentists, doctors, etc. were all closed for the day, so where were they going? Also, there were services such as limo service and free accommodation at a nice hotel that some guests got. Charles pointed out that he'd been coming on as a guest for 16 years, had never left early, but he never got any of the perks. That's the background to, and the gist of, the main part of what he was saying.

Excellent!
Charles and Dinah were always very sweet!
He's the male version of my Aunt Jean. She'd leave you in stitches just talking about ordinary everyday things. I was always a big fan of Charles. Even as a kid, I would always crack up when he was on the Tonight Show. I miss the old entertainers of show business's golden years. It's all gone now for sure.

Pure gold!
I have no idea what Charles was talking about, but it was still oddly compelling.

Not to slam current comedians, because I do think there are some true gems out there, but they don't quite make comedians of this caliber like they used to friends

@Big Bill O'Reilly on average they're more polished, because the greats of the past made a blue print for how to do it professionally. But there's less uniqueness now. Stand-ups are more polished, but they're less individual.
That's Entertainment.
Thank You CNR Nuff said 😅
Bob Hope made the most appearances on Johnny Carson.
That man had zero edge to him, just so likable. It's not surprising he's a guest over and over.
❤ him
cute appearance. Reminds me of Jay Leno's appearances on the old Letterman show; Jay would just come out and start kvetching about stuff, Dave didn't have to do much of anything. It was all just an act of course. This was when Jay and Dave were still close.

Anyone else here to see what he’s really like after watching Alec Baldwin play him on SNL in an episode of Inside the Actor’s Studio with James Lipton (played by Will Ferrell)? That sketch is hilarious, one of my all-fine SNL favorites for sure.

@@thomasmagnum3588 ~ Comedy has different levels that people of every walk of life enjoy. Your statement is completely vacuous-it adds nothing and offers no insight. It’s clearly disproven by the continued popularity of the show throughout decades of television.
