I don't know what impressed me more, the bass skills or the videography, because holy crap with the one camera panning. Is that a robotic arm? Green screen with AI? Ultra rendered 3D animation? How the heck did they do that!? I'm blown away. 🤯

Robotic arm. I think there was an interview where he said that he had trouble keeping composure when it made such sudden sharp movements

Can't help but love the music of Charles Berthoud. One of the top 3 bass players in the world, no doubt. Check out his channel!

Meh some definitions.. If you're playing the whole song on bass, you're not playing bass? What arbitrary nonsense - an arbitrary definition - like "he's good - BUT"... followed by a list of diminutive qualifiers. Hmph!! A little bit of comfort for those who can't accept that this guy is in a different league and he could "play bass" as described while simultaneously drinking a beer, playing a game of cards, juggling a cat and doing a crossword... Ascribe away, dear bass wannabees, and you will learn a ton of good stuff along the way.

Well in the classic sense, the bass was designed to be a support role, but that's only because Charles wasn't born yet, LOL.

love charles, but this is clearly his Le Fay bass being used in the audio, why not plug him in and record him actually playing the signature for the promotional video? Its misleading because these EMG's don't sound like jazz pickups in any sense, you've gotta be careful with this stuff when you're selling a product

If you're playing the whole song on bass, you're not playing bass. Playing the instrument isn't playing the roll. I'm not hating, love this dude, but this isn't what most bass players should ascribe to be.

"Playing the instrument isn't playing the roll." Well, yes... you've solved the issue your comment seems to pose. He's playing bass, the instrument, not the role of the bassline (though, to be fair, the bassline is included within his playing). This isn't really some major issue. There are all sorts of bassists out there-most play in your conventional band-centric bassline role, some few explore other facets of the instrument. There's plenty of room for all. People, as ever, will do what draws them, and they'll output more genuine art as a result.

Why limit yourself to the “role?” Advancements are made by thinking and doing outside the box.
