This video hits the mark. Authenticity is the way to truly connect. Personally, when I lie and agree with people for the sake of being liked, I become boring and lose my personality. When I agree for the sake of being liked, I withhold my truth. Withholding my truth prevents me from sharing my opinions and stories- so I shut up afterwards because the only way to retain this fake mask is to hide more of my thoughts. This short 13 minute video contains so much value. A lot of what Julien talks about here can be found in his HVC course, so enjoy the free content folks and take lotsa notes.

This is such great advice! For a long time i worked to try to be someone that was well-liked (to get external validation), so i started to be more enthusiastic, more funny (i.e., the one liner guy) etc., but the problem was that i lacked substance and authenticity. I was too fearful of being truly polarising, and I struggled to really know who i was, what i stood for, even what i liked. I also felt a lot of shame about my lack of achievements and other things about myself so i kind of locked away my past and my personality. Once i realised this, i started to stop pretending who i was and be more honest. I felt better, more confident, but pretending (to be someone else) for so long took its toll - i felt empty and didnt really know what to say in a conversation and how to connect with people since i didnt really know myself. Auditing my past has helped remind me of who i am so i can express myself authentically. Btw love your content Julian - your videos on self esteem are truly life-changing.

I agree with your view. back in high school I felt like I had no personality, I wanted to fit in with everyone and that made me no one. I would force my self to like what I thought other people liked so that i feel accepted by them and that made me forgettable. I didn't even get the friendship and approval I hoped I would gain. and for a long time I could not form any meaningful relationship with another person. either I feel like I'm not being myself or there was an invisible wall between us and they wouldn't understand me.

Learn from the Discworlds Monks Of Cool. Listen, it goes like this..... The Monks of Cool, whose tiny and exclusive monastery is hidden in a really cool and laid-back valley in the lower Ramtops, have a passing-out test for a novice. He is taken into a room full of all types of clothing and asked: Yo, my son, which of these is the most stylish thing to wear? And the correct answer is: Hey, whatever I select. From Terry Pratchett's Lords and ladies. Read it, and thank me when you've finished the book. You won't regret doing this

don't handle it. Plain and simple. You're unlikely to succeed at getting people to like you by trying to get people to like you. You can try understanding them and their hobbies, talk to them, take curiosity in them, but if you're going to pretend to be someone you're not, it's not going to work out well for you. I suggest reading a book called how to make friends and influence people. Great book.

What seems to be working for me is just having a bit of confidence and also being humble at the same time. Refrain from judging people too early, give them an honest, real chance at being friends and if your interests differ a lot, acknowledge the fact that interests are subjective, people like different things and thats completely fine, you don't need to become best friends or anything. Usually if the person you're dealing with is mature enough, regardless of age, they'll acknowledge it as well and you'll have normal, friendly and respectful relations. Realistically speaking, no person out there has a real reason to *actually* dislike or hate you unless you harmed them in some way, which is rarely the case anyway. If you're worried that somebody dislikes you just because you like different things and have different hobbies, that person is almost always an immature idiot that is mentally still stuck in middle school, they'll never start liking you no matter what you do so you're not doing yourself any favors by dwelling on it. You'll notice that their "friends" are the same as them and they tend to talk behind each other's backs constantly too. If such a person doesn't like you, it means you're doing something right and you should be glad they're not in your circle. Thats the easiest way to handle it for me personally and once I realized that, I started growing a thicker skin and the best part about that is that you simply start forgetting these people even exist, your mind truly becomes at peace.

I love that you made the distinction between the actor and the humor with the whole Borat thing, it's great to see people feeling free to stand up for themselves, and being willing to piss people off. Honestly, if he watched this, he'd probably understand it himself, he's just a guy like us, except he has to work in Hollywood. He's enslaved, as consumers, we have the power to free him and the rest of our brothers and sisters by proper use of our consumption choices. I sound like a hippy, but I'm a hippy and a ninja, that's my lineage after all. ⚡️⚡️👌🥷☝️❤️‍🔥🙏
