A while back I watched a video on male heros and the creator pointed out that it's really hard to nail down traits they all tend to have in common the way you can with female heros, until you pick a race or sexuallity other than white and straight allosexual. It's like we can build any character we want on the "straight white man" foundation but the moment we switch out one of those elements we panic and start reaching out for any stereotype we can cling to. The weirdest thing is that this seems to happen regardless of who is writing. I've definately found plenty of women authors who can't write reasonably complex and believable women characters.

I'm writing a book where one of the main female leads (there are two) has a darker color skin (I'll call her "V" for reference), and the other has a lighter color skin ("R" for reference. Sure, they don't act the same, but that's because of social status and just their overall personalities. V is from a much higher social status while R appears randomly one day with a lot of blank spots in her memory, so she doesn't really have a social status at all. Of course, then the two girls meet and their personalities compliment each other. V is more calm and composed and prefers making a quick yet sensible and logical plan and then immediately acting while R is more shy yet energetic and overthinks things _way_ too much. V can calm R down and R makes sure that V, despite how perfect her plans seem, isn't rushing into anything without all crucial information necessary. There's much more to the story that comes in later, but if anyone actually sees thos and reads it all, could you give me a bit of feedback?

“And this will offend no one”😅 yes, generic main character and generic love interest totally have nothing in common just because of their skin color
Meanwhile my black bf “You like anime?” “YES FINALLY SOMEONE I CAN TALK TO!!!”

Because black ppl don’t like anime and manga? 😂 yeah ok 😅 Next you think black ppl don’t listen to country music or metal. 😂

@@LilithsCosmicLounge They do. This was about stereotypes and how different the white MC is from the black boyfriend. I’m just commenting on how inaccurate those are. Because nerd shit transcends it all
Am black girl, can we have some nerd characters please help im desperate!!

@@flowerwreath-lif3r you'd be my goddamn hero. o7 I intend to write a book starring a character with terrible mental health as there aren't enough people overcoming traumatic experiences and mental illness while still being badasses.

Y'all did so well I was scared to like the video
"in case the audience hasn't made that connection yet" lmao.

Woooo!! Thank you!
I just found your channel, love it. Could u do a continuous series where all these characters written by men/women go to school together 😭😭 thatta be so fun!
Lmao i can't 🤣 This is so true!!
Oh no! Save the last dance is one my favorite movies and it’s totally this 😭😭😭
This is SO 2000s romcom as well!
I'm sorry, but I really like that matcha drink on the table.
I can tell they're great actors bc they didnt cringe once
Literally Teddy and Ivy from Good luck charlie
Slang go out of date before a book is published.
Wait i need a part 2
I thought we were going Psych or Scrubs at first but then I remembered we are talking books.
It’s giving Save the Last Damce🎉😂
As a black man, I approve this message.
It's giving save the last dance
You're both so pretty
So a step above hallmarkesque movies where they only meet at work (sassy black bestie underlining) or via zoom for 30seconds (sassy black friend)
The black bffs are always my fav ❤
HA HA HA!!!! 😂😂😂😂😂 As my people would say Giiiiiirrrllll you hit the nail on the head!!!
I just saw like 10 different Disney show flash before my eyes 😂😂
Didn't dare play both characters in this one, haha.
Save the last dance, this is about you😂
sighs in Shameless
This is simultaneously accurate and gag worthy
I feel like this is how the icarly reboot is
Reminds me of the movie save the last dance.
Oh my gods a new Hallmark movie just dropped!
im the suspiciously quiet character that nods in approval when you're done with the transformation
I was buckled in as soon as she said 'hi white main character, what's the emergency' 😂
save the last dance i lowkey rly love that movie tho
It's sad cause it's true, in almost every book I've read it's been like this
As a black man, I will say yeah this is so on point.
As a mixed person, I can confirm anyone who isn’t the most hypnotically Caucasian person, speaks in slang. *ahem* Wassup dawg, u lookin for a ride round mah hood?
So true as a black women i “totally” do all of this 😭
"Bc were so different... bc we have different skin colors so obviously we cant have anything in common" 💀
This was great, lol.
She can also cover her face in black paint to really bridge that gap
and I come in as the pansexual best friend to give my opinion on love and make the white character convinced that their love interest is the one and to leave the toxic one behind
It’s giving Save the Last Dance
Why was I seeing the entire plot of "Save the Last Dance" in this? Lol
Like you! Incase the audience hasn’t made that connection yet.😋👍🏽
That gurls sass is suppa hot fiya🔥
SAVE THE LAST DANCE
The white character looks like she denies being white
AND I EAT UP THIS STEREOTYPICAL DINAMIC ALL THE TIME
It’s Giving The Hayden Paniter Bring it On movie.
Oh no. Now i cant not see the mammy trope 😭
😂😂😂😂
There's much more to the story that comes in later, but if anyone actually sees thos and reads it all, could you give me a bit of feedback?
oh shit i think i have a new crush
Omg that's so good and so true 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Yay more m4m!!!!!!!
I wonder if those make sense for north americans, balck and white people being complete different even tho they live like, in the same city, I mean it definetly doesnt for me as a brazillian lol
As a generic white middle class girl, I can confirm that this is what we are like. We have no idea how to date and we do dress like that.
BROOKLYN!!! ❤
DAMN!
Just make all characters white at first. Then do a rewrite where you randomly change 10% of them to black. Just like their physical descriptions
Save the Last Dance 😬
Save the Last Dance, anyone?
Maybe he likes her as she is and by changing herself she's gonna scare him off? Just a thought... 🤔
oh wow this is hilarious
"and this will offend no one." Plot twist: Karens watch the movie, knowing about the plot, have seen the trailers, and post a negative review about it anyways just because of ✨stupid ignorance✨
I'm nither black nor white and this still triggered me lmao. Tho as an middle eastern we have our own share of annoying tropes.
