The problem is, if you look at the rest of the film, the man's shadow also becomes lighter as he walks past the zebra. Lighter shadows can be caused by a secondary light source. Also, there were hearing devices at the time that were more box-shaped so the woman could have been hard of hearing. It does make for an interesting theory though.

Amazing there are so many views and so many dislike on this comedy / joke video. Odd, just plain odd. It seems people either love it or ? hate it ? but at least they checked it out :-) Thanks to ALL of you, even ETs :-))

There was hearing amplifiers during the 1920's that fit the size of what that lady or dude is carrying. Which worked as like a 2nd ear drum. Just type 1924 Siemens hearing device on the net and you will get to see a picture of a dude with the device there. But I still I agree that it is pretty odd how that dude or lady is like holding a conversation with either herself or someone not in the camera shot. You can see her lips move; like she is having a conversation. She must be crazy, too.

Maybe it's the dude from Reservoir Dogs who got his ear lopped off, he's stumbling around trying to get help, falls into a black hole... as you do... turns up in 1928 and is like holy sh*t better dress in drag and hold my ear on while i look for help? It's pretty much the most sensible explanation I can come up with after a bottle of wine!

The only possible way of going back in time would be if you could somehow branch of this universe you live in, and travel to a parallel universe that is an exact copy of your universe (but this is highly unlikely).

The thought of drag lady talking on a cell phone in 1928 was already overwhelming enough... my brain hurts.

I don't get the "fade" effect from 0:56 to 1:00 Why does it cross fade to an elephant???????? The man with the cell phone vanishes in to that fade... but the man coming across right in front of the camera keeps there, walking.. confusing!

That's exactly what I thought. It was only the bottom part of her shadow that was lighter; the dress part, light was passing through the dress. No big conspiracy here xD

People don't know what's going on in 2010, let alone 1928. So as far as I see it, nothing surprises me anymore!

What no one seems to notice is why does that mysterious Woman dressed in black holding what is believed to be a mobile phone fade away so quickly it appears that there is some sort of overlap with a different film just at the moment she fades away which leaves a few questions Did they run out of film just at the moment she fades away? If not is there a continuation of her walking away just like the other people in that 1928 video footing?

your job today is to go back in time and pretend your on a mobile phone whilst doing an extras job in a film. im so glad they invented time travel just for that reason

SOLUTION = It is a bakelite phone - in production since 1914. Pause at 4:56 and you can clearly see the shape of the handset - a circular top and the arched handle that the actress is holding. This is an example of visual humour - early black and white movies are full of gags like this - it would have been very funny at the time, because it was of course impossible to speak on the phone back then! Note there is no cord and she is not holding the phone - just the handset. It's a visual pun.

No body reads the description under my video here. Quote: "it is a Western Electric Model 34A "Audiphone" Carbon Hearing Aid made in 1925"... Also, the person sure looks like a man (a Chaplin prank I guess)... and women did not wear that type of watch etc...

Since I'm watching this just a few days before Halloween, I was waiting for some horrible creature to jump onto the screen screaming in my face.....so I turned my sound down just in case! lol

Buuuut. If you're coming from the future, like he said, "our great great granddaughter" maybe in the future we can talk without needing service which would explain how she's able to speak in the past with no cell phone towers. Who knows :o

first thing, the guy is actually a female, and shes using an early model hearing aid, which incidentally is held up to ones ear (like in the above film) the fact that she seems to be talking to someone is that she might be testing the hearing aid out to see if she can indeed hear her own voice, simple explanations are usually the truthful ones. But i would love to see a time traveller with a real mobile phone go back to the 1920's :)

It is theoretically possible to transmit radio waves through a wormhole. However, your right about the hearing aids of the time and she could also have been testing the device as they had micro phones at the end. It is unusual though that she is holding it to her ear as the aid was hands free even back then, but again it could just be because she is testing it. Whilst the theory of time travel is very possible it seems hard to imagine that we wouldn't have more evidence of it.

She's using a 'Hearing Trumpet', that's why she looks like she's on a cellphone talking to someone. She's probably hard of hearing, and someone off stage is like: "Get your ass over here." And she has to turn and face that person in order to hear them. If you Google 'Hearing Trumpet', and find one from Chaplin's era, they are 'small' enough to be held and hidden in one hand. Mystery solved.

The shadows are normal. I'm a photographer and if you notice, when the sun hits a building with glass, the glass reflects a certain amount of light back in the opposite direction. Creating either two shadows or a very beautiful multi-directional light. The light the reflects back from the glass can also hit the ground causing it to become illuminated even when a shadow is present.

She had a swollen gum and she was icing it. Move on guys!

In my opinion i wasn't sure if i liked your voice but know i find it relaxing gives my brain those tingles you should produce more videos in my opinion you have a great relaxing serene voice.

from my opinion and from testing it with my self how far can you hold your ear if we say that she/he holding it for hearing? and the hand and also the fingers are having the same space between them in whole scene and the last fingers are in the air and not on the cheek something that would make anyone hear better.and is to talking to what? an ear-microfone? if we can say that is not holding something like a cellphone?

I love pondering these theories. However the "cell phone" and shadow are least of my worries and easily just visual tricks. The scary thing is the size of this person's feet/shoes. Could be the DEVIL xD

if you look at both of the people's shadows, you can clearly see BOTH of their shadows fluctuate from light to dark then again to light as they pass the zebra. This would imply there were variations in lighting around the studio. which makes infinitely more sense than a 75% real hologram.

I think it's someone testing his/her hearing aid. Holding it to their ear and speaking out loud to hear their own voice. I don't think it's a time traveler but I do think time travel is possible, just not now. In the future it'll happen but great precautions will be taken to prevent detection. No self respecting time traveler would risk taking out their cell phone. They wouldn't need cell phones, because with that kinda tech it'll be built into their brain or something.

Oh, well I guess it makes sense now...

As for the voice: Needs compression and high-end trimming on the EQ. In regards to the time travelling, it could be a directors reference to Jules Verne. Who wrote about mobile communication devices (as sci fi) back in the 1800's.

When I first started taking theatre a practice we all did was to take our hand and push our ear forward... That way you could hear the sound of your voice as others hear it. It actually works...So Before monitors and sounds checks came about that was how they did it..Or you can just believe its some time traveler from the future.,., what sounds more legit???

Maybe you could look at other black-and-white films and see if you can spot another one that has two people close together, with one person having a lighter shadow than the other. Then, you could present this as further evidence of holodeck-using time travelers. Very good video, btw :)

if you watch the original size video of this. you will also see that the shadow of the first man has become shallow at edge of the clip. so i say video editing was not really done in this clip . but i would like to have the original copy of this to find the authencity of the clip. hope i could find one.

its a hand held radio, she was listening to a radio show, not talking. when she turns she is stopping to laugh at what she heard. most likely at this time it was Amos 'n' Andy. a lot of people carried a small radio with them and it was normal to walk around town or on the bus with a radio to your ear.

With the technology of time travel there most likely wouldn't be people still talking on cellphones.

the guy was saying the vid was edited a bit to make the woman's shadow darker to make it appear like she is holding something in her hand. In fact she might merely be shielding her face from the camera and talking to herself.

Notice how the top of the second shadow is dark, but it gets more transparent as it goes towards the feet?. Considering tis black and white that dress could be a number of dark colours. Now im guessing that the dress thins out therefor being transparent. Hold a thin piece of material in the sunlight, for instance the skirting of a 1928 style dress?

The shadow might be a good explanation, with the exception that you're looking at someone wearing a full length coat, following someone who is not. The shadow only lightens in places where the legs part, letting more light come under the coat. The man in trousers who entered the scene before also had his shadow lighten slightly as his legs changed position. I'm not suggesting that this is the genuine article, but that's not a good explanation.

It's not a cell phone, it's a hearing aid. Seriously, look it up, that's what hearing aids looked like back then.

NO NEED FOR A NETWORK: Who's to say it's a cell phone, and not some more futuristic device that can communicate without a network, or even communicate through time?

@defundthewar - actually, hearing aids CAN unintentionally act as antennas for nearby radio transmitters if the the wiring/chips within are not well shielded. I'm not saying that's what is going on here, but it is possible for hearing aids to unintentionally pick up radio transmissions.

Everyone keeps saying that this footage is probably doctored and looking at it with computer software to try and tell... well, why not just look at the original movie and see if it's the same? Then you'll know if someone changed it. Then if it's not you have to take in to account that people sometimes pull on or scratch there ears while in social situations and she might have just been doing that while talking to her husband (AKA guy walking in front).

@TopTributeBands I think it's less "sliding" into and out of parallel universes and more "being" in one of infinite parallel universes. You are still in the same universe, just one that happened differently than all the others...and no matter what action you take or thought you have, every other one is happening at the same time.

Light does pass thru material. like a dress right? where as pants it wouldn't. Look at the lower end of "Her" shadow compared to the upper portion! You'll notice the upper portion of her shadow IS dark like "his" is. Look at how long the shadows are, meaning the sun is low and passing thru her dress.

Duhhhh, it's obviously someone listening to the sea in a seashell... lol

It's a woman with an overcoat over her dress. Her thick overcoat does not allow photons to pass through, so the top of the shadow is darker. However, her dress allows some light to pass through, allowing her shadow on the bottom to be lighter. Come on now, reality check for the PURPOSE of these videos, as joy in these videos are found in speculating. Speculating to some people is fun. I like to speculate :D Sometimes D:

First, GREAT DEBUNKING because it is either a hoax timed out for this guy's video release(s), or it is quite simply a woman who may be holding something even as simple as an ice pack (as in in ice wrapped in a cloth), to her mouth if she had a "sore," tooth. She could be holding anything but the video transitions JUST AS she turns & APPEARS to be talking. She could very easily be talking to someone we don't see. It is either as easily explained as this or a hoax. Does anyone have the DVD?
