Boy oh boy Dave this sure brings back memories for me. I worked with these 925 tie inserters plenty in my railroad career especially when our section crews would put ties in with the small utility crew. We had ties that were some bad that they would totally disintegrate as they would pull them out then we would have to turn the machine and try from the other side. I could go on and on with stories in this comment and write a novel LOL. The Kitty and I enjoyed watching the video. Have a nice upcoming Friday>(Steve)

Man does that take me back, I worked for Jackson Vibrators, Pandrol Jackson, and Harsco Rail for 50 years retiring 2 years ago June 2, I spent a lot of time building the 6700, Not so much time on the smaller machines, but they were always in sight, must of my time towards the end of my employment, for 12 years I rebuilt the work heads for the 6700's, thanks for the memories.

Refreshing to hear that tie inserter with a 4 stroke diesel. I can remember weeks at the steel mill when I'd spend 40 hours in the tamper with a 4-71 screaming behind me. I might still be vibrating from that, but, that's railroadin'!

I worked on a railroad in NY state for 10 years and loved it. I was a volunteer on a tourist RR but it was an FRA regulated line because it was connected to the CSX in Utica NY. It was part of the old NYC Adirondack Division that went up through Malone NY and into Montreal Quebec. The par we worked on came up from Utica NY and up to Lake Clear Junction and off to Saranac Lake and Lake Placid. I know very well what goes into much of what you present here but I loved doing it. I did it all, from selling ticket up to licensed locomotive engineer. Track work too, but we did that by hand much of the time due to lack of equipment. Ilove your videos. They show the day to day operations and the problems that railroads always seem to have. It's hard work, cold, wet, unforgiving too. We didn't get paid either because we were all volunteers on the line, but we still had to do the work. I soooo appreciate what you post. It's real, and genuine and it shows the true life of a railroader. It takes dedication to do it. Thanks for sharing this hard but gallant choice of work. I was proud to be a part of it for 10 years.

At the mill I use to work at, a speed swing would grab a new tie, and use that to shove the old tie out. The ties would only be changed after they had been turned upside down and respiked. Later, when when they didn’t even want to get new ties, and you could pull the spike out by hand, they would put in a wooden plug, the pound the spike back in! On day I was magnet sweeping with a locomotive crane, I sucked the rail to the magnet! I had sucked the spikes out of the ties.

Changing ties..... Once per year, before the traffic, the veteran railroad has a "track week", changing ties. During the most intensive years we changed some 800 ties that week. "We" have one Inserter Remover but borrowing another one from a near railroad we can use 2 machines. The first one pulls out the the old ties and the second inserts new ties that have been brought out to the line ahead of the work. Being some 10 or more people the track is nailed after that week. The hydraulic hammer sitting on wheels is pulled by pulled by hand. I'm surprised that a commercial railroad can afford a line to be down that long time. Anyway, an entertaining video even if You didn't show the nailing and how You maintain the cot'rrect track width.

I use one of these everyday at our refinery. Nice equipment. We pull our plates first before removing and installing ties. We keep the tie like 2 inches below the rail inserting the ties. Plates just slide right in. Takes a little finesse but there is a rhythm to it and works really good. Nice videos and very informative keep them coming! 👍

More than 20 years ago and before cell phones we lived in Framingham Mass next to a railroad that went north up to Lowell Mass. One day I watched a crew with very modern equipment replacing ties. One machine with a saw would cut a tie in half and push both pieced out the side. Then another machine would pick up a fresh tie, and swing it up in a big arc before jamming it under the rails, aligning them, pulling the tie up tight and inserting the spikes. Wish that I had the ability to film it.

Best tie inserters out there. We've had ours since 1994. They are fast, I checked with our other inserter operator to see what's the best we've done with one. In one 8 hour day we changed 285 ties with one 925 and one scarifier. We go through and pull all the plates before the ties come out also.

Hey Dave,,,lots of ties have been changed over the years with the 925s there are faster but a lot more expensive machines out there but these are great little machines that have help develop the bigger stuff My favourite tie changer is the old TKO with a kicker,,,see if anyone on here has hurd of them …great video

Love your vids. They are getting ready to replace all the ties right behind my property. Double tracks. I've seen them do it before...I think on the side- track only. My fence is across a big ditch. Then a little road runs besides the track. Last time...omg...one machine cleared ( shot) the rocks from the track first!@! Like a crazy - hurricane- machine gun. I'm going to lock..the dogs up. I'm afraid a rock might come this far.

Dave, I enjoy watching and trying to grasp the whole operation. I never worked around anything dealing with the railroad. I did however work around and with electronic communications and gunfire turrets electronically. That got a ship Captains goat when I came walking through the Bridge and h told me he'd have an operator to me in 10 minutes, and I responded I didn't need him. He asked how I'd done the job and when I said electronically he about came unglued. I looked at him and said if I have a need to know I'll know it. Excuse me while I go down to CIC, whereupon I turned on certain pieces of equipment for our testing at the dockside. That captain followed every step I took until he got to my boss who outranked him. My boss had 3 stars on his shoulders (a Vice Admiral FYI), and I reported what I'd done and then what the Captain had done, protesting everything I was doing. It didn't take long before the Captain was put in his place on the pecking order. He was informed I out-ranked him as well as being paid what a Rear Admiral gets a month. [He didn't have to know what I was being paid but the Admiral wanted him to give me respect for my abilities to operate in a professional manner aboard his ship. We got along quite well after that encounter. I'm going to let you know that was aboard the USNS Guantanamo Bay Cuba way back in the late '60s. That ship was being sent to Viet Nam to help with the war effort there. At that time I was a CWO3, and yes, my pay rate was higher than a Rear Admiral. But that was a long time ago, for a time when I had fond memories of things that had happened. Like when the aircraft carrier JFK was in the harbor in December of '68 and Jeannie Dixon said the ship would be blown up in the middle of Guantanamo Harbor. I was on the ship doing testing and it was getting ready to go to NAM, I'm here the ship didn't get blown up. If I haven't said it before Merry Christmas to you and yours this holiday season.

Oh for sure they do Paul. Way back when I started here we replaced ties with a tie tong and a lot of sweat and hard work. Had a few family members work for the pennsy as well, one of them left some inspection notes /cab blue prints of around 6 or so t1's

Replacing ties now is almost "office work" where the operator sits comfortably at his "desk" with his computer in front of him. The better deal is he has fresh air, sunshine, and scenery (not just 4 walls) around him

It sure is a whole lot easier with these tie exchangers than it used to be with tie tongs and manually pulling them out Shirley, glad those days are long gone by for me. Appreciate your taking the time to visit with us and check out the video. Happy rails to you until we meet again my friend.

Hi Dave, it's almost as if you heard me and my buddy talking about just this very job while walking the NCR rail trail this week. What timing!! Btw, I think we came across some rail rolled in 1877 about a mile north of Hanover Junction. I found some 1916 and 1914 rail around the junction. I've been keeping an eye out for the date marks. Quite fascinating thinking about the history that rolled along this line in its heyday. Hope you and your bride have a wonderful Christmas and Happy and Healthy New Year.

While the machines are great on full size ties it's always aggravating when you get the ties that are so rotten or splitting you need to have someone pull the other part out manually. Luckily you weren't doing this job during our present Super Freeze weather. Wishing you and the other devoted fans a Blessed Christmas

We've used a back hoe and grapple truck for switch ties, but simply because we never had one of these in here when we were doing that. I bet the 925 would do pretty good for that. Thanks animalou for watching and may you have a most blessed and happy holiday season my friend.

One of the best powerful machines is the TKO, it kicks the other end of the tie and yanks the other end and stuff the new ties with ease , a TR-10 is almost the same.

We've had many a TKO in here in the past, I even ran one for a day back 15 years ago but don't remember much about it other than it was an old machine and I didn't have a clue what I was doing....LOL Always a pleasure to have you visit with me my good friend.

I worked on an under cutter gang once the Forman had me in the hole throwing out ties all day by myself. Well that night for some reason I woke up standing in pitch dark. I thought that I died and went to Hell. I started feeling around felt the shower faucet. Man I was relieved I was still alive and standing in the shower 🚿

I used to run with the tie kicker and now I run backhoe with high rail with clamp shell, this one is faster and pull then insert

We have a Gaismar tie incerter from the late 1980s. The Jacks no longer work, so we have to jack the machine manually. We deal with hard ties to pull all the time

We do rely on contractors when we can get them in. They don't come that often for various reasons Johnny, but we don't have much equipment here, plus there are only 2 of us who work track maintenance. So contractors are a huge help. Always a pleasure to have you visit with us my friend.

I like that control panel on the 925! You could see all of the hoses terminating at the hydraulic levers. Not a lot of guessing if something goes wrong! I would love to work with one of them - at least for a couple of hours. 😊
