Changing Manual Transmission Oil (Dodge Dakota)
In this video I go over how to change the gear lubricant in the manual transmission on my 1999 Dodge Dakota. Changing the gear lubricant regularly (as recommended in your vehicle's manual) can seriously prolong the life of the gears and bearings inside your transmission. Like any moving part, a transmission needs lubricant to stay cool and reduce friction, and like all lubricants, it has to be changed occasionally.
The steps outlined in this video should apply to just about any manual transmission. Obviously the bolt sizes and locations may vary slightly from vehicle to vehicle, but generally speaking, these steps should apply to any manual transmission.

Thanks for taking the time and showing the "no pump" method. I bought a pump, used it to fill daughters trans fluid in her mini, but left it at a friends 120 miles away. Im not that guy that buys stuff over & over. Challenges make you stronger. Great instructional vid.
Thank you very much for taking your time to explain everything step by step, I have always been looking for how to change the transmission oil, and your video is perfect. Thank you very much.
Marcus, man this was super helpful! Most instruction videos leave out details (eg: this bolt takes a 24mm socket, these take an 8mm) but this had everything. Did mine today in less than 1 hour.
Thanks for the video, and you answered a couple of questions I had as well. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for video, it really helped me when I had to flush my transmission out, after rolling down the boat ramp.
hey marcus, finally a video of someone talking that i can understand perfectly. lol.
I've never changed the fluid in my dakota (92' 3.9 5 speed 2 wheel drive) but my clutch is slipping all over the place - its got about 200K on it and needs other repairs - but I'm considering doing the clutch job myself - ($200 for parts compared to $800 for a shop to do it) and that's how I found your video. Your video is awesome - really totally awesome. Thank you for taking the time to show and demonstrate nearly everything you did. Even though it wasn't what I was looking for - I wish more people (including myself) took the time to help teach and train others on older vehicles which the dealership in a lot of cases doesn't even carry parts for any more, how to fix and maintain our trucks. Oh, and no gayness intended - nice ass. :P :P Joking. But really - thank you so much for taking the time. I learned a lot.
thank u for excellent how to video,it helped me greatly.
Great video, everything was the same for my 95 dakota sport. Thanks brother
Most helpful video exactly what i needed to know

Is very descriptive and informative! Do you know anything about 4 runners and the wiring harness. So far you are the best video I've ever watched on KZread as far as what tools to use and show me exactly where the drain plug & filler port is at thank you thank you thank you!
I know this is an old video, but there aren't many videos on manual transmissions in Dakotas, so I want to comment. Unfortunately, this video appears to show a transmission (AX15) that wasn't stock in the 1999 Dakota. The NV3500 was the stock 5-speed manual transmission in Dakotas from 1994 to 2004. So the discussion regarding which fluid to use at the end is very important. The AX15 may use 'regular' manual transmission lube, i.e. 75-90 or similar, but the NV3500 does not. 'Synchromesh' by Pennzoil, AC Delco, AMSOIL, Royal Purple, etc. is the proper lubricant. It is much less viscous, roughly equivalent to 30W. The more viscous 75-90 gear oil will make meshing gears much harder when cold, and has to warm up quite a bit before it provides adequate lubrication to all gears and synchronizers in the gear box. (I know from experience)

Fantastic video, 🙏 thank you
great video!!!
Thank you very helpful!
There are wood glue bottles that are called ‘Babe Bot” (small size) and larger bottles, too, that push glue from the bottom of the bottle, thru a long pointed tube, that would work really well for putting the gear oil into the filler hole, under the tranny! I’m gonna have to order me the large plastic wood blue bottle, for my dodge Dakota 5-speed tranny! Thanks for showing us this process, brother!
Steps for a 2000 dakota v6. The drain plug is on the bottom its a 17mm hex . The fill plug is on the passengers side 17mm hex. It takes 3 qts to fill and I'd recommen a drill pump for fast filling
Thanks dude..
Thank you!
Easiest way to add the oil is to stick a tube in the oil insert hole on the side of the transmission and run in up through the engine compartment and fill it with a funnel. just be sure to know how much to add. easy peasy.
that was a pretty good video let me know when you change the clutch on that video we need to know taking it to the shop will cost me $700 just to change the clutch
Why no run a tube into the fill port and up into the engine compartment and then pour the oil down teh tube..
Hi is this the same procedure for a 2.5l dodge dakota 5 speed manual ? And also the same oil? Tanks great video!!!!
Thanks!
How similar is the 2003 Dodge Dakota SXT 5 speed standard transmission?
Once you have the boot removed all you have to do is put a piece of hose on your bottle tip I use a clear type hose but fuel line works well also then you can put hose into fill hole and squeeze bottle till empty
Hi sir! Pls show video how to change manual gear or transmission oil for mitsubishi lancer 92 what we call here in the philippines is lancer singkit... Tnx sir
Is it the same process for a 94 Dodge ram 1500?
My clutch was changed and now I can’t find the plug-in on the transmission Or on the harness for my reverse light..95 Dakota ax15 I believe
Hello friend, do you know what oil the gearbox uses?
Do these transmissions have filters or no?
So wut kind of oil to put. I got same thing
How many bottles of that royal purple did you put in? I see you have 3 but did it take all 3 or did it take more or less?
@gerowen

It took all 3; probably could have taken a little more but I was going off the listed capacity. I'd get 4 and that way you've got an extra if 3 doesn't fill it up to that fill port on the side.
I have a important question. I purchased a 2000 Sport in January. The previous owner never touched the tranny except to replace clutch. It has 235000 k. If its been long since the fluids been changed, would it be risky to do a fluid change on it?

+Marcus Adams Thanks for the advice bud. Appreciate it a great deal.
Hello, Marcus. My husband has asked me to go online and find out how he is supposed to know when he has added enough transmission fluid to his 1994 Dodge Dakota (nv3500 transmission). His is a manual 5 speed . His transmission fluid has been leaking. He already bought the part(s) his mechanic told him to buy in order to stop the transmission fluid leak. Now the mechanic says he needs to buy fluid to replace what was lost. He says there is no dip stick with marks that he can use to know when he has added enough replacement fluid. I've been looking for about an hour and finally worded the question the right way and it brought me to you. First, we are going to watch the video and if you don't answer the question during your demonstration, we are going to come back and post this question and hope you read it soon. OK, you didn't address our question. We also notice you did not mention Mopar brand manual transmission fluid. His owners manual says he can use only that brand or its equivalent. He can go about 30 minutes away to the Dodge dealer and buy Mopar but since you seem to know a bunch about this kind of thing, which equivalent brand would you recommend to him or would you suggest he buy the Mopar brand since we know where we can get it? He needs to get this work done ASAP so I will check back every day for a few days to see if you've had time to answer. Knowing which brand of manual trans fluid to buy and how to know when he's added enough replacement fluid is all that's standing between him scratching his head and being able to "git-er-done". We enjoyed your video and have subscribed to your channel.Oh, finally, since I don't know jack about trucks, I've probably used way too many words to explain our problem because I don't know what all you need to know. Not knowing what to say, I just said everything. :-)

If you overfill it just take the fill plug out of the side and let it drain back out into a pan until it stops running. That fill plug on the side is also how you check the fluid level; you just fill it up to that hole. I don't have this truck any more and I forget how much fluid I put in it, 3-4 quarts I believe but I could be wrong.
My truck looks damn near the same, 1999 dodge dakota sport 2wd 2.5l l4 with the 5 spd manual

What does dual clutch manual oil should I use
@gerowen

I'm not sure, mine wasn't a dual clutch. Your best bet might be the owner's or Chilton manual, or just go into your local parts store and have them look it up.
would it be the same for a 98 Dodge Dakota sport?

Will that stop the grinding Of gears and make it stay in gear?
@gerowen
3 жыл бұрын
If it's slipping out of gear you may have worn synchronizers or a worn/bent shifter fork that's causing it to not go completely into gear. Grinding can happen if the master/slave cylinder for your clutch is leaking and causing the clutch to not completely disengage when you try to shift. If it's grinding when you're sitting still and you try to put it in reverse, that's normal, just put it in and out of third gear to line it up before going into reverse.

@gerowen

@@waynewilliams5802 Leaking master and/or slave cylinder. The clutch pedal is hydraulic; you've got a master cylinder on the firewall directly attached to the pedal, and a slave cylinder on the bell housing that actually pushes the fork inside the bell housing that applies or releases the clutch. I had the exact same thing happen once. When it got really bad I could put it in first gear on level ground and hold the clutch pedal down, and it would "creep" on its own, moving very slightly even with the clutch pedal on the floor. I could only put it in first gear with the engine shut off. Basically one or both of the cylinders is wearing out and allowing fluid to seep past them and so not completely disengaging the clutch. I got a pre-filled kit at Advance that had both cylinders pre-filled, so I just bolted it on to replace both of them, no bleeding required.

How do I check the fluid level?
@gerowen
2 жыл бұрын
Park it on a level surface and remove the fill bolt from the side of the transmission. The fluid should be just up to that hole, so if a little runs out or if you can stick your finger in and touch it, you're fine. If you can't touch it and none runs out, you're low. If it's completely over top of the hole, you're over.
is my 95 the same 5speed

My 94 was. I couldn't find solid info but visually confirmed that it is the AX15 using this website: www.transmissiondigest.com/domestic-truck-transmission-identification-guide/ I just did this today, followed Dude's instructions and it went perfectly. Done in 1 hour, aside from getting parts. Shifts so much better now. Unless you order ahead, the local parts store won't have the "correct" "manual transmission gear oil", so I did exactly what the Dude here said, I paid an extra $10 per quart to get Royal Purple because it is the only one that says "safe for yellow metal". You're only getting 3 quarts, $30 is cheap insurance to get the right thing.
Same on a 5 speed 95 v8 GMC Sierra?
Is 4x4 the same fluid.

WHAT'S the expensive lesson you learnt using the wrong gear oil ? What did it do ?? I KNOW THAT You can even use automatic transmission fluid in manual transmissions. I have done it in a Corolla. BTW I just got myself a First Generation, 1996 Dakota V8 5.2L manual transmission @ a police tow in Los Angeles. Very Rare in this part of the country. Anybody want it & wanna make me $1500 richer ? 😅
