I love the “instead of protecting from downside you should optimize for the upsides” I feel like I’ve been protecting myself from the downsides and am now lost what I want out of my career. I’ve lost motivation to work and don’t know what I’m doing anymore. I’ve been stuck trying to figure out what to pivot to next

Honestly Chloe, you seem so passionate when talking about loving being a PM! I also think your content was very relatable with you talking about jobs and career and it felt nice to know you're in ita dn experiencing it, not just making content about it. But of course it is your choice!

I think your content is great because you provide a much more 'wise' perspective on the job market...and on life in general. A lot of content creators are super young (as you mentioned), have very small understanding of corporate culture, what a 'normal' 9-5 looks like, etc. It's really jarring sometimes to see them trying so hard to portray a perfect picture, and I think you bring an element of 'realism' that is needed. I think your tech managers made the right call. This is the perfect transition period that you can make full use of to experiment, iterate, and to breathe a little (I know how stressful PM is sometimes depending on the product lol). Worst comes to worst, you have a great resume and can dive into a ton of different companies when the job market recovers a little.

  • @chloeshih

totally agree with taking this time to breathe a little. i took an interview right after the layoffs. they were really interested and asked about next steps and i realized i need more time before diving into another full time PM role. thank you for your perspective on what you think is unique about my videos! appreciate it a lot ~

Although, I followed you because of ‘corporate’ (since TikTok vid), I think you may have the natural flair for content creation - creative side. You managed to grow another 100k subscribers so fast when you focused on home tour/being creative. Not many people can be creative and analytical at the same time, and it seems like you can do both. Usually those people who can do both can really excel in own journey. This is just a gut say tho & you know yourself best! All the best!

Hi Chloe! First, your social battery is impressive! So much going on and so many people to see! I wanted to say that you have so many options and you know that you will excel at whatever it is that you put your mind to. I love seeing how you cultivated relationships with people where you can ask for guidance but also provide the same when a friend is in need. I love your content but I understand wanting to be a "salary man". I did freelancing for a bit and realized that I don't want to think about work 24/7 and I would rather clock out mentally once my work is done. I am excited to see what you do next and thanks for sharing with us!

I'm a Creative Writing MFA graduate and published poet--and I totally get where you're coming from. Professionally while I was in Grad School, I'd been working the Corporate Life and really enjoyed the structure of it and the discipline it entailed + goal-setting, negotiating, achieving things. And it came as a shock to me when I finally got the opportunity to teach and write full time that I actually didn't enjoy the environment that much. I think a lot of what fueled me to write was being around a variety of people (not to say that all creative people are the same--of course not; but it's like all of you are looking at life from that creative/"let's make something from this" kind of mindset) and so I realized the life I wanted was actually a variation of the life I was already living: working in corporate, but also doing a lot of creative stuff on the side.

I've only recently started watching you, I've seen you for years here and there on socials as you pop my feed but fully started watching more of your content in the last year or so. I'm in the pursuit of my career change and seeking motivation, insight, and also I love how transparent and relatable you are! I think from the videos I've watched you (and I've watched A LOT since I've subscribed) I think your path 3 but also choosing to do content in your own way is the best choice (: I have no doubt you are someone who can do anything you put your mind to! And I think its super awesome you have such an amazing support system (: especially Kevin haha You have a huge skillset and there is no reason for you to follow the norm (: Your upbringing or I guess your experiences have given you so much perspective and you understand things differently than content creators who were as you said started it from the beginning and may be in the early twenties. I look forward to your videos cause I love watching peoples journeys and I'm very excited for you!! You are so passionate and I love your content because I can tell you and genuinely want to help us out! I'm glad you kept popping up in my feeds because you give me a lot of courage and motivation when I'm feeling doubtful even if I am no where near where you are. What I really like about your content is how you're very transparent about your experiences in your career, which is what drew me to watch you're videos. Frankly, I would be too scared to share my experiences, because at least from what I've seen, it seems as if outspoken people are the first to be let go, even if their right (about workloads, work culture, etc.) Thank you for sharing your experiences, it really does give me more insight and perspective on what to expect/currently see from my own life!

Great video, Chloe! Its so evident from the video that you're in love and almost born for product management, whether working at big techs or start-ups or whatever the industry of company size is. I just really adore your enthusiasm for work even though I don't work in tech or product. About going full on with content, it's your choice and everyone should respect that. I just think that as a viewer, we need more product managers out there on social media than another vlogger who shares with us her ordinary life that's pretty much the same as us but she gets to live a privileged life and makes money off the more views she has, which equals to more people watching and craving that for themselves. I believe you will find your sweet spot soon and I'll be here watching and supporting you as usual 😝😝😝

D: i agree tho - that's why i had to add more to the last video on "how much I spend in a month". I really felt it was super consumerism-focused and my principles wouldn't let me just end the video right there. i had to organize a budgeting sheet, share a real salary i had, and budget it out together to add value to the viewer. thanks for your super real comment, cindy!

Chloe! I resonate with this so much. My last corporate contract just ended and I found myself grasping for loose straws in the old agency / copywriting world. However, my friends all reflected on me - it’s time to go after what I want in creating videos. Like you, I’m not sure it’s a full time thing for me, but I want to consider it my step back before figuring what I want and also, a step forward in my love to create! Like you I don’t think creating content is sustainable (it works for some if you really hustle), but I also think you have the platform to stay with it if you want. Maybe you can also be a PM / negotiator for content creator companies, and be a creator yourself! Finally, I appreciate that you did all your research. That’s something I have yet to do on my path. Thanks!

Content creation by nature can be isolating from team collaborations, camaraderie and access to market innovations compared to the corporate environment. Effective product managers seem to be gifted with strategic thinking, complex problem solving, and roadmapping. Success can look different, whether inside or outside of the corporate biosphere. something that i constantly have to remind myself as i'm kind of in a similar spot to you right now with figuring out where i want my career to go from here is that nothing is permanent. you can change and alter your life at any time and making one decision means it doesn't have to be *the* decision. you can start down a path, decide you don't like it, and switch up again. i get anxiety about this because things tend to feel more permanent than they are. kind of getting vibes that you have a similar mentality, so just wanted to share this reminder! life is malleable.

I think you should just own corporate (until you absolutely don't want to anymore). A lot of us found you through your PM and career advice. Now you can document interview prep, interviewing, talking through your thoughts and learnings in a NEW market, and then rejoin. And if you don't like it, then you can always quit and do KZread! But since you're conflicted, I think it would be nice to just try to join corporate again while also doing youTube on the side until you know for sure that you want to do KZread 100%. I also think not doing youTube 100% sets you apart from the rest of the KZreadrs. There are many people who just lifestyle vlog and your channel was more unique.

I really loved these two sentences: “instead of protecting from downside you should optimize for the upsides” because I really feel like sometime I put myself on the this spot of trying to cover or solve the downsides, without getting excited about the upsides. So wow, that really hit me. And also "were gonna take this 6 months at a time"which can seem small, but for an over achiever like me, serves as a good reminder. I think with the job market the way it is, taking this much needed break from corporate is such a good idea. Who knows - you may love it! Or maybe it'll take you into another direction like starting your own media agency! You're so talented and I've been following you since your first PM videos. ❤

Hey Chloe, congrats on your 200K. I take PM inspiration from you, so according to me you would be a great PM. However, as you mentioned there are options such as start up or working in a leadership role could be a helpful for your growth in next 5 years. I am Team Tech! But we are always gonna get so much to learn from you irrespective of your decision. All the best! Onwards and Upwards, Cheers!

I'm so glad that you posted this, too. Freaking love your video production quality and sound quality too!! Not gonna lie, you're one of my inspiration for the content I am making now. hi Chloe, we have a very similar crossroad - have left my PM job out of burnout and now having the choice to pick my own adventure moving forward. i am also starting to pick up design, i have always liked design and have demonstrated good design work but just never dived deep into it. your videos help me a lot and inspire me to do more in figuring out my next steps! as for my 2 cents in your path, i think you'd do great focusing on content creation, however i'm curious as to the type of content you'd push moving forward to continue having an edge. personally i feel 3rd option is the best, if you are able to handle it with your future commitments (like being a mother). i think you've been handling content well as a medium to show your journey online, and you can do many things! anyway, you are much more ahead than me and you know best for yourself, rooting for you no matter what you do! xx

Product manager here - laid off end of last year and now going full time content with way less of a following than you - but also pursuing other avenues of income, dream would be to keep accumulating real estate and pursue my passions/travel/etc -- also do more in real estate -- but for now its tech and lifestyle content and thats ok with me! Giving myself a year to have to make the back to corporate decision.

"I don't think I've ever felt more frightened, exhausted, lost and excited all at the same time before." sums up my exact thoughts right now as I'm turning 30 this year. I left a full time job in Oct 2023, subsequently did a part time job and currently unemployed. I'm at a crossroads where I'm still deciding if I should start from scratch in a new industry or go back to what I was previously doing. I'm always anxious seeing my peers progress but at the same time reminding myself that everyone is doing life in their own time and there is no need for comparison.

I obviously don’t you in real life but you seem like someone that is very team oriented, driven, and detail oriented. From my perspective if you do content full time you definitely need to do it your way and keep an eye out for burnout, given that you seem to put 100% into the things you’re doing. Listen to your gut and pay attention to how you feel in each path. Good luck! I love your videos so far

I love the move to proactively reach out to career mentors / those in the paths im considering. Curious if you could share more about how you framed those discussions? I.e. What were the key questions or topics you made sure to discuss? That would be really helpful 😊

Wow this video really resonated with me esp the parts you hate about corporate and the parts you absolutely love. I think you can add a ton of value in the content space bc of your unique experience and honest perspective as a minority and a woman, and I think you made a great choice taking it 6 months at a time instead of going all in and keeping tabs on tech jobs you might actually want to apply to. I definitely understand your passion for tech, I work in tech too and love and hate it for all the same reasons. But I also have hope that if more open minded women like us are in tech we can eventually change it to be more welcoming to women and minority groups. I’m excited to see all the content you create during your full time content creation season of your life!

As someone who binged all the videos after discovering your channel, needless to say I thoroughly enjoyed your storytelling and content. We are in the same age bracket and it’s tough to solely rely on content creation full time to achieve all the financial and life goals with this career path because there are so many things that the creator have little control over, eg monetization, audience growth and planned career trajectory. Creators are not guaranteed for success despite hard work and dedication. I was at a career crossroads once and my friends were being real with me and said there’s shit in every workplace and career path. Don’t let hypotheticals and reservations get in the way, eyes on the prize or whatever it is you value from a job 😂

I think Kevin said it best to consider what you want, and I would further qualify it in asking what you want to do *right now*. Where are you being pulled into more that makes you excited at this time of your life? You can also set a deadline and indicators of success for yourself. If you feel like you aren't meeting your success markers in content creation in 6 months, then it's time to move on. By setting a deadline, you're forcing yourself to fight and do your best work in that span of time. I get where your tech friends are coming from in suggesting considering for the upsides rather than protecting against the downsides. At the same time, once you start having a family, protecting against downsides is also important because providing a stable environment for your children is also important.

I get bored and frustrated with content creators who do what everyone else is doing 🤷🏽‍♀️ there are a lot who are clearly more interested in becoming famous and being an "influencer", which is fine, but not the energy I'm willing to spend my time on. I don't want to be 'influenced,' I just want to connect with and learn from other people. I like you and the other creators I follow because there's joy in the process of creation - you do what you're interested in and that is more than enough for me. Just make the content you want to see, tell the stories you want to tell, be the person you want to be, and everything will be fine! People resonate with you because you already do this so well.

I work as a graphic Designer and Digital Marketer and I feel like I thrive in small-medium businesses. I love having a smaller network of people to communicate with but get along with really well. And I find that smaller companies allow for more autonomy especially when you are earlier on in your career, which is great if you're someone who likes to have more control over how things are done. I like to create my own systems but the thought of having my own business scares me becuase of all the additional BTS works I'd have to do. I'm not ready for that but it would be cool to have my own design agency one day.
