Changes I've Made Because of the Algorithm (my experience)

Hello! I wanted to share some of the changes I've been making to my social media with Instagram's and KZread's new algorithm changes. I've seen a lot of stand still with my channel and Instagram accounts because of these changes, and in the month of December, I began implementing some new things into my posting schedule to reach my audience more effectively.

I just think it is really sad that everyone changes what they are doing or loving in some kind of way because of a new algorithm. I have the feeling that social media like it was in the early days is kinda dead since ads and making money is the only thing they try to implement more and more. Maybe we just have to step back to more personal communities before the whole social media thing happened. I would love so much to have this more personal feeling again. I really love your content you don't need to teach anything in my view. Hope you will keep creating content you love 💖

Sara, I've been subbed to you for a long time. Like, a LONG time. I admit that I have stopped watching your videos consistently because I feel I've grown as an artist, and while I can see that you have too... I crave more novelty than I can get from your channel. This isn't a dig are you, nor is it a petition that you change ANYTHING about your art (I would never suggest that to any artist!) I'm just trying to express where I'm coming from as a long time subscriber. When I watch you paint, I feel as though I've watched it before, even if I haven't. I think I have a cap on how many "pretty girl with vaguely similar features" videos I can watch... And it may also be that more people I follow are doing this than before. Please continue to do what makes you happy, and I will check in on your videos now and then... but if you ever want to branch out into different subjects or styles, I would watch the hell out of that. ❤️❤️ You're amazing, no matter what!

I can relate so much to your comment! I'm starting to get tired of artists who have the same face syndrome 24/7. Even if I like their art, their personality, the fact I see the same face and even same expression over and over makes me go a bit bleh.

"Please continue to do what makes you happy" best advice. I keep stressing myself as if YT is going to play a major change in my life if I do more legwork, but I am forgetting that I started YT because of lockdown and quarantine to have fun. "Everyone" says you must find your niche and target audience and focus on that. Yes. Quality is important. But not in the way you make something you really do not want to.

also, I don't think that people don't like your art vlogs! I have seen some other creators trying to broaden their content and then feeling frustrated when their other videos don't do well. but I don't think that's the matter of people not liking them, it just takes time! your audience needs to get used to the different content, and that will also pull people in that maybe enjoy the vlogs but don't care that much for the tips videos? I think if you love making them, you should continue, the audience will follow!

Really appreciate this post not only as someone who’s looking into sharing content online but also as a viewer. Hearing callouts like “subscribe, like and ring the bell” so often have kinda desensitized me to the point where I barely think of those as separate *real* words. I rarely see content that I dislike and yet I often forget to like the videos out of habit. Hearing the effort you’re putting in definitely served as a wake up call to push engagement as a viewer on content I enjoyed. Made sure to like and share this video, as well as make this my first time commenting.

All of the advice in this video is really well put and the piece you're working on is gorgeous, but something about this video still kind of makes me sad? Like hearing all of the limits you have put on yourself, and I know that constraints often lead to great changes in our work and that we will naturally constrain ourselves, but still, I don't know. I already know that I have trouble being free when I create since I spend so much time overthinking things and as a kind of newer art channel it makes me scared that I may push myself further down a road of limits if that makes sense. Anyways, regardless your art specifically digitally really has improved so much this year so maybe the restrictions do help since you are as you said forced to excel, but I hope you continue to paint in watercolour or any other medium you feel like painting in even if the algorithm doesn't like it.

I struggle with the same issue tbh. Social media and the anxiety it generates as ruined art for me. I still create and still call myself an artist because I love doing what I do, but being a slave to algorithm to make your dreams a reality is honestly depressing. Suffer-culture already makes us believe that sacrifice is needed to be successful and everyone glorifies the struggle, but no one talks about the harm that comes with it, when you have to give up your health or your dreams.

  • @SophieRoseArt

    @SophieRoseArt

    3 жыл бұрын

@@islanddryad Definitely agree. I mean social media is weird because in some ways I have felt pushed to improve my art and create more often which has in general sped up my creation, but it also took away I don't know I guess an innocence from creating? Like I used to just draw and not think twice and now even if I never plan to post a piece I can't help but think about it which takes away that feeling of freedom and looseness. I am trying to reconnect with it though. I have basically given up on making videos about "good pieces" and I just make videos about the process and talk about struggles and well Instagram I still haven't figured out, I barely post at all trying to work on not caring what I post and just feeling free to post whatever I create or whatever I feel like putting out there but at the time being whenever I do that I end up archiving it because I don't like it

I've been following you on Instagram for more than a year, I think, Sara, and the only reason I saw your post leading to this video was because I decided to do a New Year's edit of whom I follow, clearing out accounts that are no longer posting or I'm no longer interested in. And I realised I hadn't seen any of your posts pop up in my feed recently (that applies to many of the accounts on my follow list!) in spite of there being REGULAR posts and updates. I find the algorithm SO frustrating (and a little concerning, purely as a user) - it seems to affect Facebook, KZread and Instagram equally badly. I'm hoping that this thorough edit to lower my follow count will help refresh my feed. And it seems having visited all the accounts on my list may have helped bring them into my feed again. I'm planning to do a monthly edit this year, because it sure sucks missing out on great content and inspiration. Good luck - don't be discouraged. And SUCH a gorgeous sketch, by the way!

Hi sara! I'd find it super sad if you stopped posting watercolor portraits, I enjoy yours so much! I feel like it's difficult, but also very necessary for our personal happiness to find a balance between posting things that we enjoy making and posting what we know will do well on instagram. Only posting/creating what you know people will like is very limiting, and makes you stay in your own bubble, don't you think? I always love it when artists I love try out new mediums/styles, finding new passions and failing in others, it makes following their journey much more interesting! It might not do well in the beginning, but that's just how the algorithm works, what does well is what is expected. but doesn't that hinder personal/artistic growth?

I can relate to so so much of what you said ♥ As someone who is heavily relying on social media for getting my work out to the world it has become more and more of a struggle. A few years ago, getting lots of new followers on a daily basis with only sharing my work was something I very much took for granted. Right now, it is a good day if I only loose about 100-200 followers :") It definitely takes a toll on your motivation and mental health if you feel like you grow as an artist, but people either becoming less interested or the algorithm strucks you down. It is sad to limit your creativity and work around that just to be seen. I'm myself someone who works with traditional mixed media and digital art and I don't want to miss that, so I rather set a goal for myself to concentrate on a certain subject matter and coloring style as a red thread for my upcoming pieces. I attend conventions on a regular basis (well not in 2020/2021 obviously) and prints of my sketches and very stylized digital art do just as well as 40hrs+ traditional pieces so it gets even more confusing ohn what direction to got to :") I just really hope that everyone who is struggling will get a chance to be more happy again this year ♥

Thank you for posting this video. It has really resonated with me. I am a very small channel and I have quite frankly given up on trying to work out the algorithms on social media. I try to get engagement on my posts. I do the call outs etc but for some reason it still doesn’t seem to work. People just seem to scroll on past. I’m not an uninteresting person and every now and then I wonder if it’s my age. Then I see other creators my age take off. It’s most disheartening. So I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m just going to stick to creating what I want to create and forget about growing my channel. I will let the fates decide what happens next. Which reminds me I must create a new video. What with the world situation currently and being so fed up getting nowhere I stopped posting videos for a couple of months. I believe that you must create the videos you enjoy. If you want to expand your "reach" consistency is one of the key factors for most algorithms and Instagram has switched up again and time spent looking at a post is another key factor. I enjoy traditional artworks more. I watch the artists I follow all the way through and unless the "ad's" are over the 6 minute mark I will watch them here on KZread. I hope you consider working on the videos you want to make, as well as the ones that do well. I am entertained by instructional videos even though I am knowledgeable in most areas of artistic endeavors. Seeing how an artist works is fascinating to me. I am not necessarily needing to know how you do something, but I am interested in watching you succeed in your process! I look forward to seeing how you resolve these issues and I hope you continue to create all kinds of videos and that the "system" does not penalize you for being an original artist!

Oh, I really liked your artsy vlogs-as some other people have said, a mixture of the two types of content might allow you to keep up with the algorithm while continuing to post things that bring you joy.

I've been trying to grow my instagram for several years and I'm still below 500 followers. It got me real down last year and I stopped posting, thought that my art must be bad and tbh, I got real toxic and salty about seeing other artists who's art was still at a beginner level but they got thousands of likes and had like 20.000 followers (a toxic mindset to have and I#m not proud of thinking that way. I never made any rude comments on their posts or told them their art was bad or anything like that, but I definitely thought that kinda stuff). i'm now at a point where I try not to give a shit about the numbers. I post when I feel like it and then move on. it's just not worth stressing about or basing your value on the likes

I really loved how you talked about the character you Were drawing and telling a story about her so I hope that in the future you Would do that .

personally I think I noticed you through the watercoloring community. I know a few artists on here who I consider relatively big, but I couldn't tell you how well their videos do on the average. I think it's clear that tutorials are the bread and butter content for artists because I don't think any artist does youtube without one "how to" video. I'm not a youtuber so I couldn't tell you what is the most effective way to go about it, but if I WERE to think of something efficient, maybe it would be to do one general how to video... and then make subsequent videos on the idea. (like a video on highlights or color scheme and then describe your process). As a viewer, I think when creators make "series" content, it gets people excited about the next "episode". OOOR if you decide to work on a large piece maybe turn it into a story time, but make sure to pick out a relevant and poignant art story... or maybe it doesnt need to be about art, it could be something poignant and how it shaped you as you. tl;dr You've made it clear that your art channel is starting to stagnate and now is your time to take risks and be daring... but keep true to art you wanna make.

2 thoughts I have: you can probably do more content geared to your interests as your audience grows, and please keep doing the studio blogs every once in a while. Doing something you love and feel proud of will keep you motivated.

It's so sad to hear that you've been struggling because of engagement. In my mind you and a few other people are SO good and wonderful artists! I don't really like changing my art in order to appeal to an algorythm or an audience. In the end it's your art. You paint for yourself and for your legacy if you wanna say so xD Ahh, i'm sorry, it's so discouraging to hear you changing your ways to appeal to anyone ;_; I mean, sure you have to comply to the algorithm to stay relevant; it's a double sided sword. (Hhh maybe i'm sounding rude, i really really love what you do is what i"m trying to say. And i'm here for anything you want to do. Go wild ^^) Stay amazing and i hope you have a great new year!!

To be honest, I watch any of your videos because your voice is relaxing and I like to "draw alongside" creators while I do my own work. I love your traditional and digital stuff pretty equally! I think if you wanted to reach out to more people, switching up your drawing subjects could be a start. I know a lot of people don't always want to see women as the subject. I know a lot of artists that really capture my attention do a combination of backgrounds/environments as well as portraits and also tutorials. But do what makes you happy--that's what's more important!

"dream" he was uploading videos from years ago.. the only video that popped up is the one about pewdiepie .. he got 100k sub and million views .. the original ideas didn't get him fame and veiws only the one about pewdiepie .. after he gained 100k subs ig .. he started to upload his ideas and ppl are crazy about them .. I think your content is good but u r just not noticed yes .. ik I don't even have 500 sub but that's my opinion .. or advice if u want

Instagram has ridiculous requirements for getting pushed to others and actually has ridiculous requirements for not being basically shadowbanned. I'm not on it often enough to have a large following but now I'm just not going to use it because the work it would take is legit too much time and effort just to not be thrown into the void. I hope you make changes that you enjoy and not just things for engagement but I do understand. I don't watch a lot of vlogs per se but I do love watching art videos where people talk about whatever they feel like talking about while they work. Vlogs are too distracting for me but I love working along with people. You're tips are fantastic but any video with art tips is going to get more views than just speed paints or even vlogs because art tips are something people go search for. I think it can help to ask what the video is going to be watched for and if thats what you want to make for people. Here's the interview where I got that info about insta for more details: twitter.com/rainylune/status/1341184419957116928?s=20 edit: also people are using insta less because of the changes so that's going to hit you hard too x.x

Honestly the algotithm is so not on my side, I put so much work into my youtube videos and I havnt grown very much at all (I make general vlogs and stuff, old school youtube, younger conan gray and some smaller British creators are my biggest inspiration). It's something I love to do so it's not like I'm going to stop if I don't get any more followers than I have, but it would be nice to grow a bit.. I don't really have a particular audience yet but I'm hoping to build one made of people who really enjoy my content by only making videos I really love and being myself, but that means growth is slow as I don't use clickbaity titles and thumbnails etc. Idk. This is just a load of waffle Haha, but if you're interested in finding a new person to watch and want to support a small creator; I'd really appreciate if you checked out my videos ❤
