I used to be stuck in victim mindset but with work I realized it was because as a kid my parents could always save the day. As humans we miss the feeling as a kid of being saved or coddled by someone. When a parent would hold you and tell you everything will be ok and all you had to do was sit there and everything did become ok. Now we have to empower ourselves to be the parent to our inner child. Tell them it is ok but also take steps to make it that way

I take this perspective with a grain of salt. I think it takes discernment of your circumstances to determine how much you can take on to alter your mindset to ultimately change your circumstances for yourself. It places a lot of responsibility on the individual to change, when there can be plenty that is outside your locus of control. I hear a lot of contrast of “victim mindset” vs “empowered mindset” not allowing for the gray area in between. I think it’s a privilege to have power and mental capacity to simply change your mindset for positive results. And the pressure to change your mindset when contrasted with things like depression, trauma and societal disenfranchisement can place blame on individuals.

THIS!!! It's hard enough to just "change your mindset" when you're a first world citizen living with debilitating health issues.....now imagine saying this message to a survivor of war or someone living in a third world country....it would come off as extremely tone deaf. You are absolutely right that it is a privilege to hold this perspective.

  • @xcristinat

Also, I hate the term "victim-mindset" - it has such a negative connotation...why can't we admit that sometimes people are victims, whether it's of someone else, a culture, society, etc?? Just because someone is a victim doesn't make them a horrible, helpless person. It's simply acknowledging the way that that person was/is treated unfairly.

@@xcristinattotally agree. Our modern, hyper-individualistic society has way too much focus on ‘winners vs losers’ and the idea that happiness and succes is a feasible concept. Sure, partly this is true, but it totally ignores important aspects such as genetic predisposition, societal and cultural influences and one’s cognitive ability to see things in a different perspective. Therefore if you are not successful or happy it’s probably ‘your own fault’.

I’ve been saying some version of this to people for a while now, which usually went “well you can’t really do much about what happened, but you can control how you respond to it”. I can honestly tell you that timing this message and softening it as much as you can is key to it being heard. When someone is spinning out that usually is t the time to challenge them. I’ve made this mistake so so many times.

Oh my gosh GIRL! Yes. This is how I have chosen to see my life for what feels like a decade now. It's the only way to do it. I've learned so much. And honestly like after the summer I just had (breakup with partner of 7 years, ending friendship of 9 yrs), I cannot tell you have beneficial it has been for me to take time to focus on myself and learn how I can grow from these experiences. I am now a few months past that stuff and things are already looking incredibly better. I, like anyone else, have my hard days but in the grand scheme of things I am doing so much better and a huge part of that is the committed mindset I have cultivated.

I’ve found the best key is to not beat yourself up for negative emotions, it’s all part of the experience of being here, and not every event will have a silver lining. But there truly is something to be said for how, without the bad, we couldn’t truly appreciate the good. All experiences are temporary and it’s best to be kind to yourself throughout all of them. Happiness won’t stay, but neither will misery.

Yup! This is basically a happiness science 101: Things are never good or bad. Because it all depends on what you compare them to. Is breaking a leg bad? Not necessarily, because you could've broken your spine. The quickest way to feel better is to think how it could've been worst (negative visualization technique) and the biggest mistake we make (to feel down) is we think how things could have been better..

No matter how well you play a bad hand, you still got dealt a bad hand.

The first step to changing anything is acceptance of the things that you cannot change. Well... it might take a number of steps to get to that acceptance. Denial, anger, bargaining, depression... I mean acceptance of the past is basically the first productive step. You always need to be in reality to change the future. You know, a lot of modern activists like to object to optimism, seeming to feel that if folks feel too empowered, then they're not likely to fight for political change. And that may be true in some cases. But defeatists are not going to fight, either.

I was recently stuck in a victim mentality after I left a job I loved for an opportunity that lead nowhere. I had to go from working at a photo studio, to working as a cashiere again. I was sad and scared and wondered how’d I find another job related to my field (I live in a state with little opportunities in my chosen career). I also have little skills since I went to a university that did not have the best program. I felt sorry for myself for a bit. Then, I decided to fix my situation. I got a better paying job. And now I’m going to community college and taking on a mentorship with someone in the field to improve my skills and get a portfolio. Even though I’m lost and a little embarrassed that I’m not where I want to be, I’m going to take action. Let’s hope all goes well.

Needed this. I opened up to my friends about a guy who was bullying me and instead of being there for me they ghosted and stayed friends with the guy instead. Feels pretty hard to reframe this in a positive way :(

I think the message isn’t necessarily to make it all positive, but just to find the silver lining. In your case, your garbage friends took themselves out to the dumpster. A similar thing happened to me when I was 18. but from that lowest point, I wound up getting a job with some amazing people that I have remained friends with to this day. I didn’t see a way out, but I found it by complete accident and my garbage hand turned out to be a life-changing boon. I’m sure that you will find your way towards people who will be good friends that are worth having in your life.

It doesn't work when there is a war in your country and missiles fly above your head and you don't know whether you will have your apartment tomorrow morning or one will be destroyed by a missile. Sometimes what happens matters indeed.

That's pretty much equivalent to the Law of Attraction. If you don't like your current self, you've gotta start acting like the person you want to be, and that comes with everything Anna said here.
