Change the Front Sprocket on a Yamaha XT250

A really simple process. The only slightly tricky parts were bending up the flange on the lock washer, and then making sure the nut was lined up with that flange correctly to re-bend it when the new sprocket was installed.
The part number of the lock washer (if you don't want to re-use the original): 90215-23265-00
In the video, I used a 31mm socket for the nut, but after looking into it more, it looks like 30mm is the exact size.
The 15T sprocket I used: amzn.to/3BUy60d

    Thank you for the video. I did the same thing, I bought a 300 Rally and regretted selling my 2013 XT250. In the end the 300 Rally wasn't the right bike for what I wanted to do, so I bought another XT250. I couldn't find a second hand one near where I live in Australia, so I bought one a new 2021 model (the last one my dealer could get). Sadly, you can't buy a new XT250 anymore in the Australia market due to ABS laws that came into affect in Nov 2021. I use the XT250 for casual trail, farm and street riding, and it's perfect for me (I'm not a racer or serious off-roader), and I love that I can do most of the maintenance myself.

    Yeah I’m glad I got a 2022 because I believe the days are also numbered for the XT 250 here as well . Maybe not necessarily the ABS issue , but I know that they quit making the little Serows for the Asian market last year and I’m hearing that these are the last few bikes well will see in the North American market as well . I think they’re just phasing them out soon to be obsolete and who knows what will replace them?

    Great tutorial! You have a big heart, feeling obligated to post something that hasn't been posted. You are a great example for others! One of my old, large screwdrivers is named the "prydriver". It gets a regular beating on a job like this. Whenever I change oil, or work on a greasy chain, I don a pair of disposable latex gloves. If I forget the gloves, dish soap & a scrub brush with a few drops of water do the trick.

    Thanks! Yeah, I've been trying to remember to wear the latex gloves when I tinker with the bikes (or cars). In fact I had a whole a box of them sitting behind me while making this video, I just usually forget they're there until my hands are already covered in grease 😊. But yeah, dish soap does a decent job of cleaning things up after the fact.

    QUESTION PLEASE: The gear you removed has 2 rubber pieces on the outer side, a smaller arc and across from it a larger rubber arc piece on the gear. Don't know the name of these 2 rubber pieces or the function of them? The gear that was installed doesn't have the 2 rubber pieces on the gear... why not, how will this affect the bike? Are replacement gears with the 2 pieces of rubber available? THANK YOU.

    You’ve got a very good eye. I’ve never seen an aftermarket sprocket that has the extra rubber pieces. It actually turned out that the sprocket that I replaced was stock - I thought it had been replaced with a different size, but I was wrong. So both sprockets in this video are the same size. I assume the rubber on the stock sprocket is there for some sort of vibration damping, but I’ve been running the new one for a while now and haven’t noticed any difference.

    Haha, you have a very good eye! I hadn’t even noticed that. The previous owner of this bike must have done it along with the FMF pipe that was on when I bought it. I honestly can’t tell any difference from stock on the performance.

    Nice tutorial video ! I just recently got a 2022 Yamaha XT 250 . I looked real hard the CRF300L and the KLX300 for quite a while. I am happy with my choice . I had to sit patiently on a waiting list for almost two years for one to become available at a dealership because of the Covid madness and nobody had any bikes . What are you going to do with the fmf exhaust you took off ? Just curious . What kind of tires do I see here on your bike ? And also , what kind of footpegs are those ? DMO or something different ? I definitely need a wider set of footpegs.

  • @HighDesertHills

    Thanks! I sold the FMF on eBay. Actually came out a little ahead because the stock one I picked up cost less than what I made on the FMF. I’m not sure what brand of foot pegs are on this bike, but I had DMO on my last XT250 (and XT225), and I highly recommend them. My go-to tire combo on the XT is the Dunlop D606 in the rear and the Pirelli MT21 in the front. That’s not what’s on this one currently, but I’ll be switching them out as soon as these wear out. Congrats on the new bike!

    Thanks for posting this. Could you elaborate a bit on the differences between 15 and 16t sprockets? I came looking for this because I want to go from stock to 16t. Seems like most people go that route with this bike. Since you've had both, why'd you choose to go back to stock? What type of riding are you mostly doing?

  • @HighDesertHills

    @HighDesertHills

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi, going up to a 16t front sprocket will increase your top end a little, making it easier to cruise at faster speeds, but it decreases your low-end torque a bit, so things like low speed hill climbs are a bit harder. I do mostly trail riding on the XT, so I prefer having the low end torque to top end speed.

    @@HighDesertHills After reading this it sounds like you'd be the person to ask. I just installed the Procycle Super Moto Wheels on my 2022 XT250. The wheels are 17 inch and now feels like its reving a bit more and not going anywhere. Like the engine is working but I'm not going fast if that makes any sense. Also my speedo is about 8 mph off as well. I expected these things to happen and they are no big deal. But I was considering going to a bigger front sprocket like a 16 tooth hoping it would help some? I do all hardtop currently and live in flatlands Florida so going uphill and torque are not an issue. Any insight would be appreciated whether you think the 16t vs 15t would make a noteworthy difference in the ride? Thanks

  • @PepperTreeMarket

    @PepperTreeMarket

    @@findingneutral Yeah, jumping down an inch in diameter on the rear wheel is essentially the same thing as putting on a bigger rear sprocket. If it were me, I’d start by throwing on a 16T front sprocket and see how it feels. If you’re still not happy with the speed, and are ok losing a bit more torque, I’d go a tooth or two smaller on the rear sprocket as well. Changes to the front sprocket have a lot more impact than changes to the rear (I believe it’s about 1 front tooth = 3 rear teeth), so you can do your big change on the front and then fine tune it with the rear. And again, going bigger on the front has the same effect as going smaller in the rear. The nice thing is that sprockets are pretty inexpensive, and not too hard to swap out, so it won’t break the bank to try a different setup and see how you like it. Good luck! I’ve been tempted to build a SM myself. They look like a blast.
