Aker was awesome in the wet. All the really skillful players usually are. Jimmy Bartel was amazing in the wet. I know Geelong fans used to look forward to watching him play in the slop. Stengel's game earlier this year was a masterclass. Handled the ball like it was dry when every other player was a mess.

Issue with just looking at the data is you miss what’s happening in the real world. Freo have been forced to play Draper in defence all year and have thus played a system that protects their defence. Cox is due back this week and Pearce in a couple. You’ll see what their defensive profile is like in the next edition. Fremantle are building quite well. I agree that right now their profile is not premiership level, but that may change with Cox and Pearce back.

Bontempelli, Cripps and Daicos, right now, are on another level. I'm a Pies supporter , but I would straight away tell my son to watch Marcus Bontempelli and tell my son " that's how you play football". My money, now, is on Bont or Cripps to take home Charlie. But we all know that what they themselves want is a premiership medallion to celebrate with their brothers.

We need to not hold so much weight on the Brownlow. The umpires can hardly tell the difference between holding the ball, throwing the ball and a legitimate handball from 5 meters out yet alone able to judge who the best players are. They mostly just go with who they think should get it based on name sake for example Neale last year getting 3 votes when he didn't even have 20 disposals.

Regarding team win stats. You need to stop counting every win as stand alone without a weighting system. It's worthless information. You need to rate/categorise the wins according to a weighting score. Like 1. Win against top 4 or top 8. And 2. Win margin. 3. Win at home or away. 4 was win a giveaway like port st kilda port hawthorne.5. Win based on injury numbers or full strength. Etc etc. . Then multiply each sub category to get a weighted total. That will give a much better information.

Can we please get a statistician on the show (not from champion data) in to debate the foundational assumptions of this 100x model? It is now becoming fairly and prominently criticised across social media and even by people in the profession but Hoyne and Champion Data stick by it like it’s gospel. Refusing to respond to any criticism and making statements like “I’m going to sidestep that one” when genuine concerns are raised. Shows to me you don’t even believe what you’re presenting. It’s either time to explain and support your work and investment or stop making blanket objective statements like “player x is the (insert number) best player in the league this year”. To me the sheer number of loose half backs in the top 20 (both currently and in previous years) would suggest this model has serious flaws. Neither Kane nor Gerald (who in fairness appears to not know what day it is most of the time) have scrutinised anything Hoyne pulls out of his ass with this.

US has Sleepy Joe, we in Oz have Sleepy Gerard. We have a couple of commentators who should retire due to age related slowness. We have other commentators that should just plain retire, but who would replace them lol. Yeah, the problem with AFL statistics is that we are not a major sport in the world, otherwise the stats we would have access to would be fckn awesome.

I’m a Freo supporter but what he was explaining is pretty well on the money. When we lose the centre clearance we give up goals far too easy, as witnessed by the Eagles and Bulldogs games. Our Points Conceded numbers are good because our midfield often prevent the fast delivery into the opposition forward 50m, but when they can’t prevent it the opposition scores a bit too easily.

He always goes on about how they measure kicking efficiency against EXPECTATION ie. how likely is a player going to make that kick for the exact reason you mentioned. Blakely ranks highly because he pulls off harder kicks than most in that position and he is obviously in the 10-15 best players in the comp rn.
