Oh blah blah. How many times do these things have to happen for people to realize that actually these cars are very safe? Gerhard Berger at Imola 1989, Alex Caffi Monaco 1991, Erik Comas Spa 1992, Mika Hakkinen Australia 1995, Mark Blundell CART crash 1996, Martin Brundle Australia 1996, Villenueve and Zonta Spa 1999, Kenny Brack CART 2003, Ralf Schumacher Indianapolis 2004, Robert Kubica 2007, etc. all of these crashes were "so lucky to survive" despite them happening so many times

@@jefftaylor1186 what tells you that haha. Berger was out for one GP. Caffi was uninjured. Comas was knocked out and saved by Ayrton Senna, but was fine by next round. Hakkinen was badly hurt, however the quick actions of the medical team did save his life and he had a full recovery in 4ish weeks. Blundell was sidelined for a couple weeks, full recovery made later. Brundle was completely unhurt, actually in such good condition that he ran back into the pits and jumped in the spare car while the crowd cheered him on. Villenueve and Zonta were both completely unhurt. Kenny Brack was actually hurt, spending 18 months recovering but not racing CART anymore after. Ralf Schumacher was sidelined for a couple races but made a full recovery. Kubica was only sidelined for one race and made a full recovery too. Out of all these huge crashes only 1 was unable to continue elite racing. 1 other driver did have some minor changes to his life. What are you talking about?

People who say that she crashed like that because she's female need to GTFO. This crash reminds me of Greg Moore's fatal crash at Fontana. Granted there's a major speed difference, but the physical look of the car is almost the same and just as scary. Glad to hear she's okay.

There are some comments here stating that Legge lost her entire rear wing before the crash, but it was actually just the wickerbill, which is the small lip along the back edge of the wing. Still, with as critical as downforce is to these cars, once it was gone, the result was inevitable. She's an excellent driver and it was good to see her walk away from that crash.

EVERYONE has different tastes in car design and because of that, you will NEVER design a car that is "cool" enough to be the sole reason a fan was attracted to a series. I didn't prefer CCWS to IRL because they had the cooler car, I preferred CCWS because they had better racing. THAT'S what attracts most fans. Looks are secondary.

Not 5 from 16. You forgot about the addition of Surfer's Paradise and Edmonton. 7 out of 18. And Tony George has indicated that by 2010 there'll probably be a 6-6-6(6 oval, 6 road, 6 street) schedule. And shut up about the Dallara already. I'll agree its ugly, but the look of a racecar is the POOREST reason to judge a series. A car must be designed to do its job within the technical specifications as best as possible. If it looks good on top of that, bonus.

u got it. thats absolutely true, there is no tension at all but we watch it cause there's no coverage of US series on european tv. i really hate modern f1, cars with all their wings producing nearly no slipstream, making it so hard to overtake. also most of the new tracks suck. but 20 years maby is a little to hard. f1 used to be allright until the end of the 90ies. it was great until the death of senna in 94, cause after that they put to much focus on safety and killed f1.

Ugh, I am SO sick of seeing that argument... Yes, the IRL Dallaras are ugly(especially next to the Panoz DP-01 and even the Panoz IRL Car), but the look of the cars is the STUPIDEST reason to judge a series(if it were valid, Daytona Prototypes would have KILLED Grand-Am). Everytime I hear someone make a big deal out of the IRL car's looks I wish I could make them the first person since Jansen Van Vuuren to be reduced to a cloud of pink mist by an open-wheel car.

From next year, no more winglets in F1.Aerodynamics will be reduced of at least 30% with return of slick tyres to try to have more mechanical and less plane car. Maybe overtaken will be more simple than now...I hope so. Now formula one dreams a spectacle like this.

If you watch Gregs crash in slow mo, you can see his helmet and arms had heavy contact with the ground several times while he was violently flipping so fast after the wall contact. If it wasnt the head first hit to the wall that caused it, the rest of the crash was not survivable either. That was the perfect example of a crash that the first time you see it, there is never a doubt what the outcome would be as i knew i had just watched someone die. Unlucky dude and its still sad all these years later...

Oh, and quite extra note: I find NASCAR mostly boring. Too many 1.5-mile ovals. I prefer road courses and short ovals, but restrictor-plate racing I find to be the only way you can race a track longer than a mile and make it entertaining. My opinon comes from my own racing experiences(vintage formula), and I find oval tracks themselves lose their challenge once you exceed a mile in length.

Those cars DO have all of those. And then some. Champ Car implemented Zylon anti-intrusion barriers long before F1 did(2001, after Alex Zanardi's crash. They were originally metal, but changed to Zylon a couple of years later). Because crashes on high-speed ovals are so much more serious than road courses(look up Kenny Brack) due to higher speeds and lack of runoffs, safety has historically been a much larger part of US open-wheels than in most other forms of racing.

Way too little runoff area, and it's insane to use turf at these speeds - even gravel traps are becoming ineffective, due to speeds so high that cars surf over them. Carts are unbelievably safe, these days, and the engineers who design them to be so deserve medals for their achievements, but if you're going to have extreme speeds (which is good, IMHO), you need extreme track designs. The car can only do so much.
