Chamonix is one of the oldest ski resorts in France. Wherever you are in the Chamonix valley, all you have to do is look up to see the majestic Mont Blanc, culminating at 4,810 meters above sea level. But that's not all: the Glacier des Bossons, the Aiguille du Midi, the Mer de Glace, the Col de Balme, the Aiguille d'Argentière, the Grandes Jorasses, the Dent du Géant... The Chamonix-Mont-Blanc valley is home to thousands of snowy wonders and peaks to watch (or climb!).
During summer when the snow melts, nature takes over and the landscapes are transformed, offering a completely different panorama. Although Chamonix remains a nature destination first and foremost, its town center is breathtaking. In summer, it is particularly pleasant to stroll around this small town in bloom at the foot of the snow-capped mountains. The town of Chamonix was once just a humble mountain village.
Chamonix was part of the historical land of Savoy emerged as the feudal territory of the House of Savoy during the 11th to 14th centuries. The historical territory is shared between the modern countries of France, Italy and Switzerland. The House of Savoy became the longest surviving royal house in Europe. It ruled the County of Savoy to 1416 and then the Duchy of Savoy from 1416 to 1860.
The first party to publish (1744) an account of their visit was that of Richard Pococke, William Windham and others, such as the Englishmen who visited the Mer de Glace in 1741. The growth of tourism in the early 19th century led to the formation of the Compagnie des Guides de Chamonix in 1821, to regulate access to the mountain slopes (which were communally or co-operatively owned), and this association held a monopoly of guiding from the town until it was broken by French government action in 1892; thereafter guides were required to hold a diploma issued by a commission dominated by civil servants and members of the French Alpine Club rather than local residents.
Reflecting its history, Chamonix features a mix of traditional Alpine architecture and more modern buildings. At the center of the town's pedestrian area is a lovely Baroque church. Scattered around Chamonix are old-fashioned chalets and Belle Epoque hotels, as well as rustic country lodges.
The village is full of tourist shops, upscale boutiques, and gourmet restaurants. Dining options range from casual cafés and traditional brasseries to fancy gastronomic establishments. However, the best way to enjoy the regional cuisine is experiencing a welcoming auberge or mountain refuge.

@@HER6GEARS we tried skiing for the first time, theres a free magic carpet lift that beginners can use, so all we had to do was rent the skis, boots and poles which were only about 15 euros for a day. we did the alpine luge which was AWESOME, tip youre allowed to put two adults on one luge (and buy just 1 ticket) even though the signs say you need two tickets and only one adult per luge. rest of the time just enjoyed the hiking when the snow was a bit less and just enjoying the town, its breathtaking there so for the whole 1 month we were never bored.
Unparalleled beauty of this French mountain town!

@@PerpetratorPulse This is definitely the kind of place to avoid during peak touristic seasons, summer and winter, if you can, in order to avoid the crowds and the inflated prices. September is ideal.

Just love Chamonix, been there close to 10 times I believe. So many nice memories. It's a place for anybody and everybody who loves mountains and skiing or hiking. Have been to many nice places, like Zermatt, Gstaad, Verbier and others, but nothing beats Chamonix. Miss it

The difference is that Canadian Rockies does not have century old town to decorate it. Glacier Lake National Pack is as stunning as well, if not more.

Stay in Les Houches and get the bus into the main Chamonix area. It's a pain, but you can save a little.

@@guidedmeditation2396 Believe me, people who live in Chamonix don't need to "save up" to go to Disney World. In fact, they don't even live in Chamonix, they just buy houses for their week-ends/holydays, forcing the locals to move elsewhere because they can't afford to live there anymore.
