I actually liked that "Challengers" had an open, ambiguous ending. The point wasn't about whether Tashi would end up with Art or Patrick, but all three of them rediscovering their passion for tennis, and connection with each other.

As the timelines jump back and forth in increasing pace, you could feel the tension as you anticipate a rapturous climax. Then right when you think it's going to arrive, something unexpected happens and it doesn't arrive, at least fully. This slight unfulfillment leaves a passion burning inside you even when you leave the theater. At least it did for me! It's kind of like if someone you find hot does a consensual, erotic dance on you and before it gets too hot, they just leave. Director Luca Guadagnino is brilliant at encapsulating human desire because he engages all the senses. It's about the journey, not the climax.

im actually flabbergasted that people think the ending of challengers was unsettling or bad?!? i loved it i thought about it for days after.

To me, Challengers’ ending was pretty clear. It was always about the relationships between the three, not about tennis as the actual game. I always go back to Tashi’s line that tennis is about the relationship between the two players on the court. At the end, Patrick & Art were finally able to cut through all the history & crossed wires and focus on each other & the game, and Tashi was finally able to watch & enjoy some great tennis.

Honestly I have never thought of ambigous endings as automatically unsatisfying. To me, satisfying is more about staying true to the story beats and the character arcs than having a very clear-cut conclusion. For example, Black Sails, my favorite show of all time, has an ambigous head scratcher of an ending, and yet it is the most satisfying I've ever seen and I'll never stop thinking about it. On the other end of the spectrum, universally hated endings like that of GOT or HIMYM leave no room for interpretation, yet are incredibly unsatisfying for the audience.

For me Barbie's alternate ending was better in which M3gan pops up and does a voguing battle to Eurodance against fruity Pinocchio.

i feel like some people don’t like open endings in movies bc nowadays it’s basically “too much work” to draw conclusions and create their own interpretations of the movie instead of having it handed to them and giving a definite answer. everything we consume is really quick and to the point, so critical thinking is at an all time low. i think it’s nice to have an indefinite ending, it’s way more interesting and gives longevity to the movie

It was good where I didn't even care anymore who won. Once they both actually got into it, following where Tashi said she just wants to see a good game earlier in the movie, I got excited. I was excited to see them embracing the match(their relationship). That part was satisfying to me. But I did want a straight forward answer of how their relationship would be. Would Art still quit? Would Tashi coach Patrick, but actually stay married to Art? Will Patrick and Art explore their relationship further? I chose the ending where they become a toxic throuple

I wasn't sure what Challengers was about the first time I watched it. But I had to think about is so much that I watched it second time and LOVED IT. Its look, the structure, the performances, dialog, outfits, THE SOUNDTRACK - just an amazing cinematic experience!

I love a good obscure ending because it makes me think more about the state of reality that certain characters we’re in and where they’ll go in the future

challengers ending was perfect?? it was never a happy go lucky romcom meant to be wrapped up with a bow. its a movie about messy complicated relationships, and the end is left purposefully ambiguous, yet positive. tashi finally got to watch a good tennis match, which is all she wanted from the very beginning.

I thought that at the end, Art finally wins fair and square against Patrick (after what Patrick revealed motivated him). He had always lost to him before and i thought the hug was out of Patrick being proud of Art, Art feeling the joy of finally being good enough, and Tashi just loving tenis and being happy her man didnt suck hahah

loved challengers and nope! I love a movie that leaves me thinking and its always interesting to hear other people’s interpretation and conclusions of the ending

the challengers ending felt like a call back to the first game in which tashi was introduced. we get the same scream, and there’s a reunion between art & pat, who you can argue haven’t been exactly united since tashi entered the picture

I have watched a lot of more artsy art house type of movies and i can guarantee you, you can learn to love more of an obscure/sad ending. Although in the beginning i’ve never been the type to search for clarity, but seeing so many good stories with such a beautiful opened and unarmed endings just made me appreciate it more when a story teller are able to do them correctly.

I watched challengers today and i really thought it was an amazing movie! so many people are used to romcoms, superhero, comedy movies but i feel more people need to experience movies like ladybird, asteroid city, and more indie movies...

i think the ending of challengers was perfect actually because a “solid” ending would not lead to the discussion we’re having right now. i feel like over the years, movie watchers (or media consumers in general) have lost critical thinking skills and need everything to be spelled out to them. a major part of critical thinking is making inferences by using context clues. i think we can all agree that the crucial point of the match wasn’t who won, but how art and patrick reconciled their relationship through the sport that made them fall apart in the first place. and tashi screamed because she’s finally watching some good fucking tennis (remember, she’s vicariously living through art’s career, so seeing him finally break through must’ve meant everything to her). i think that open endings are more forgiving to audiences, it shows that the writer doesn’t undermine their intelligence.

I too have watched the movie twice. Art clearly won at the end, you could clearly see the ball hit the ground and Patrick caught him mid air and they hugged, showing some sort of reconciliation. Taschi screams because Art won, meaning she gets to continue training him til the end of his career based on their previous agreement about him retiring if he didn't win the challenger. The only thing that wasn't clear is if they will go back to being friends and what will Art do about Taschi's infidelity.

thats just simply not true lmao, thats not how tennis works, not only did art not get the point, the match hasnt ended, it's to seven points. Tashi screams bc she's finally seeing some good fucking tennis, and its very much clear that the hug symbolizes them coming together, both as friends and as smth more, with Tashi.

I like opened ended media as long as the creator/ director/somebody involved with the story development says what they think the ending meant lol it gives me space to really think about the media I just watched or read, but I still get a tidy ending to it as well.

I highly recommend the Japanese movie “Mosnter 2023” whit a what u could call an open ending but DAMN what a good movie

I think not understanding challengers means that America has reached a dumb down peak. Tashi got her joy of tennis back. The boys got their relationship back. Patrick got his determination for once that other guy got his passion for the game. It doesn’t matter who literally won the match because they all won.

I don’t know if this would be up your alley, but The Curse with emma stone and nathan fielder has the most insane ending ive ever seen. I was left so unsatisfied. And its not that the ending was bad, it’s that it was written specifically to be an ending that was hinted through the whole show, yet completely unpredictable.

This video reminds me of the idea of “Two things can be true at once.”

Great video. Someone should do a video (an analysis really!) about Zendaya being all of these great things but a great ACTRESS is absolutely not one of them. I know we all see the discourse that she is “mid” so let’s talk about it! I adore that woman, but after seeing Dune and Challengers, I turned to my boyfriend and said “how in THE WORLD does this person have 2 Emmys?”.

It might just be me, but I don’t see how the ending of Nope was “nothing happened” in the slightest. What I got is that the movie was about the spectacle and the things people will do for fame, etc. They got the money making shot they wanted in the end and everyone survived (except that one guy, but he brought that on himself) 💀

My ex was unfortunately one of those people who doesn't understand subtext and has low media literacy, so he hated Challengers and tried to reduce the whole thing down to who "won" at the end and missed the whole point. This is why people should pay attention their literature classes, it teaches you how to look at these types of stories properly, even if you don't particularly like them.

I used to play tennis. When there is a tie, one person has to win by a certain number of points. So we don't know who won at the end and the whole theme of the movie is the very fact that it's not about who wins and looses, but about that very small moment of time when two people actually PLAY the game. Tashi's grunt is the first time she felt anything towards the two men, because they finally played and meant it.

Based on your thoughts in this video I think you should watch Burning starring Steven Yeun. I thought about that movie for WEEKS after seeing it the first time. And then I couldn’t stop so I watch KZread videos on the movie because no one else I knew seen it. I wanted to see if any one else shared my thoughts and whether or not someone had a different perspective than me. And now almost six months later I saw this video then yesterday I drove past a row of green houses. Girl, I almost missed my exit thinking about the final scene. Lol. The beauty of a movie like burning is no matter the theory, you could be right, but still could someone else. And depending on your mood or whatever is going on in your life, you may interpret it a different way. Each watch give you something new because there’s no clear set cookie cutter answer at the end.

You mentioning how people's lack of media literacy contributes to them being unsatisfied with open endings reminds me of how people will just straight up ignore characterization or character development when criticizing a tragic ending. Some examples are the musical Falsettos and season two of the TV show Good Omens. Falsettos ends with one of the main characters dying of AIDS and I've seen some people try to write this ending off as unnecessarily sad even though it served as a wake up call for the other characters to change their behavior/mindsets. Then there's Good Omens season two (which although not the final season of the show) ends with one of the main characters rejecting the other and leaving them which left a LOT of fans angry even though it makes perfect sense with the character's inner conflict.

You understand the ending. The ending is brilliant! Here, I'll explain: we don't need to know who won the match. The guys hugging at the end means they are finally friends again, and Zendaya's scream at the end is a villain's scream of losing. The reveal at the end is that the match score is not important. The manipulation is over. What has been important all this time is the friendship.

Yes i am going to be that comment you are looking for if you didn’t like that ending. Personally, I didn't like the ending of the Challenge, not because it's been done over and over again, nor because I hate deconstructing a piece of art, but simply because you don't end a film with such an exciting plot in this way. As a part-time author, and having looked back on some of my books, I know that the reader has an attachment to the character and that his or her evolution throughout the story is a source of inspiration. It's not just about beauty. A film is first and foremost an experience, and like everything else in life, an experience has to have a proper ending, or it just looks like an ex who's just abandoned us for no reason at all. Personally, if this film had been like Malcolm and Marie, which was just a couple arguing after drinking a lot of alcohol, I wouldn't have minded, and I'd even have understood the artistic choice. But here, we're dealing with a decade-old story, an exciting rivalry and a fully reciprocal love triangle. Plus! We were given an ultimatum at the end of the film, the end of which we'll never know. Love story or not, this ultimatum is linked to the main plot and allowing the film an extra 15 minutes to give us an answer with a 10 years later or whatever, wouldn't have killed the script, it would have ended it. I felt like I was wasting my time and I'm frustrated.
