I was going to thin the chalk paint, since it was clearly too thick and leaving brush marks. I really like her idea of keeping the brush damp instead.

I just painted my first piece of furniture today and I used a dark charcoal color. I gobbled the paint on dry to get it on there and was panicking when I sanded my second coat and it got lighter. I watched so many videos trying to figure out what to do next. THANK YOU. Also I immediately hit that like button when you said you feel your surfaces as much as you paint them. I do the same thing, I need that smooth surface.

I am so happy I found your video...have to laugh and say sure could have used this knowledge a few years ago! This was very helpful thank-you! I was painting a ugly Dollarama plant pot with white chalk paint and I was having a hard time. I switched to a bigger brush, used less paint and a bit more water, sanded it and wiped it down in between coats and it came out so good, I was even able to get out all the lumps of paint that were on it from however it was painted before by sanding them out!❤️

I am painting my green marble fireplace surround with charcoal chalk paint and boy does it look streaky/uneven - the hearth was the worst because it's a larger area and I was trying to go from one end to the other to keep it smooth but it looks darker in some areas (like waves in the ocean lol) - paint was also pulling in areas. I had no idea about dampening the brush first. I've already applied 2 coats but will go ahead and do a light sanding and apply the 3rd coat with a damp brush.

You can burnish with the flip side of your sandpaper. Have been using this method for years.

I wish I had found this video earlier in the week! I am refinishing a stained doll cradle. I likely sanded it and wipe down with mineral spirits a few days prior to painting. After the second coat, the brush marks are terrible, but I’m having an issue with a few parts of the piece having a yellow tint coming through. What do you recommend to remedy this?

You've broken thru the original topcoat and you're getting tannin bleed thru. You need some type of primer to prevent it. If you already have the entire piece painted, you can go over it with primer and then add your next coat of paint. Dixie Belle makes bonding boss, but any primer will work

Black will sometimes show"scuffs". What color wax are you using? What brand

HELP, I chalk painted a piece with white chalk paint. It is splotchy and can see brush strokes where they end and begin. I did 3 coats. On the third coat, I used water to thin paint, but never thought to spray water or use wet paintbrush. Now I feel like a fourth coat is needed. I don’t know what to do

I’m so freaking frustrated. I’ve been painting and refinishing pieces my whole life. Chalk paint has been the bane of my existence. I thought that it was self level better. I watched a bazillion videos before I started my piece now I’m up to my eyeballs in sanding to smooth it out. It’s not at all what I thought. And if you don’t send it every brushstroke extra thickness or anything else will show up.

@@PamHaskins awe 😊. Ty! I went and had some sushi in a couple of beers with a GF and feel much better now ha ha Ha. Of course I had to go big or go home so I did my entertainment unit lol! For my life I could not figure out what I was doing wrong and the paint dried so fast it was thicker in some spots and thinner and others. I’m one of those anal retentive people who likes that smooth finish. I spent yesterday sanding and wiping and wiping and sanding. Thinned my paint out with some floetrol since I only had about a third of a quart of each color left. That help me stretch it. Then I used a spray bottle to keep dampening my brush and feathering out the paint and it looks much better now. Once I get the hombre done where the colors meet I’ll be much happier and then I can start on the mural for the doors. I guess I can live with my cabinet for another 20 years now. When they said chalk… I didn’t understand until I was sanding. Now I have a very clear understanding of what it is and why it dry so dang fast and why it’s so hard to get that flat smooth finish that I was trying to get. The 150 thousand videos that I watched before I started on this endeavor never mentioned anything about sanding. It says it’s self leveling but then it dries so dang quick… and you can’t see brush marks in the video… after I watched your video I watched a few others and learned the spray bottle trick. I’ve never used rub on wax before either… I hope I don’t ruin it with that lol. Any tips for inside corners?

I will in the morning when lighting is better. My house has terrible livhting

The problem I have is with a large area. When I do a board it comes out great, but when I have to do a large area it becomes a mess.

How do I not get brush strokes using chalk paint on a glass vase ? Should I be sanding that down between coats as well ? Someone please help

@@PamHaskins I am using a chip brush not sure if that’s the right brush and no I have not been keeping it damp or spraying it with water ! Just dipping it into the waverly chalk paint and putting it on lol you can tell I’m new to this

@@katherinefrederick3164 get a synthetic brush and keep it damp, not wet. That will give you a smooth finish. If you apply more than one coat, be sure to allow the first coat to completely dry first before applying another coat

Question for you my dear Pam ! If I did my first coat and I see brush strokes, is there any possible way to remove them ? I did a light sand after the first coat ! Thinking I may be out of luck, brush strokes will remain right ? ;(

Pam Haskins Yes keeping damp ! Although maybe not enough lol Tried a few diff brushes to be honest :( Annie Sloan brushes (flat and round) as well as diff ones like Wooster or Country Chic..... I may do a sand down and try again but this time light strokes, maybe I was too heavy :( Am thinking I need to spray with each application and see if that helps ! Just really want a smooth finish look, now to the touch it’s perfect like butter ! Go figure lol

No problem - take some 320 grit or higher sandpaper, and sand LIGHTLY. The brush strokes will disappear

I also have hotspots. Paint won’t cover

I have decided to temporarily finish mine, because I don’t have any more time to spend on it prior to my family Christmas. Then I am going to wipe it down and kilz it, then chalk paint it. This is costing me more than I paid for the shelf.

@@PamHaskins I just wiped it down with Awesome cleaner and then just a wet cloth wipe down. The hotspots are where there is build up of acrylic, or furniture polish. When I redo it, I am gonna wipe down with mineral spirits.
