How to Diagnose, Test and Install an Ignition Coil When your Chainsaw Won't Start & Has No Spark.
In this video you will learn how to fix a Chainsaw that has no spark. Sometimes the saw will start and run okay until it gets hot and then it will quit and not start until the chainsaw cools.
I will show you how to diagnose, test and replace your ignition coil.

Truly thank you from an Old DAV who’s been pulling on a Stihl for a really long time with no results.. Semper Fidelis

Thank you very much!! I did exactly what you laid out and my old J'red 670 Champ cranked right up after swapping the coil out from a Husky 55. And Semper Fi as well

thx, will be trying this fix. New subscriber
I had a similar problem with my MS241 C-M a few years ago. It was not a bad coil, but a disconnected bayonet connector on the spark plug wire. I reconnected it to the spark plug wireand it cranked right up. No problems with it, since.
Judt wanted to give you some positive feedback. Using your technique i figured out My echo cs 590 ignition coil is fine but the kill switch was bad. You are a champion ty for this video.

You da man!
I love this channel so much. Always a pleasure to see that you have already covered a topic I’m looking into. That said, the principles involving hot coils works the same across many applications. Good fundamental knowledge for troubleshooting!

I'm glad to find video, I'm going to be facing the same dilemma
thanks for the video. I've had trouble with Stihl coils, and customer service doesn't really care. I have seen several videos, where one takes out the plug, and turns the crank with (Hand drill) high RPM ( in the operating direction) This somehow clears any magnetic buildup (?). I don't know what it does, or why it works, , , but the videos indicate (demonstrate ?) that it really does work from time to time, , ,but of course, if the coil is fried, nothing would help. Much luck, and thanks again.

Excellent!
Brilliantly executed tutorial. No start on my stihl 011av. Have spark, but question if it's strong enough? Other video recommends buying an expensive tester where gap can be adjusted. What do you think about opening the gap on a spark plug and seeing if it will jump the wider space? How large the gap space? Saw has good compression and I feed fuel directly into carb throat. Thank you for your work and guidance. All the best.

If you have spark that is probably not your problem. Gap on your plug should be around .020". Here is a video that might help you narrow down your problem: kzread.info/dash/bejne/o6eHua-ylZzYYLA.html Let us know what you find out.
Sounded good at startup!

Don't know if you watched till the very end... but it works great now. Cut that tree down and cut it all up and the saw works like new. Thanks for watching

@@helpinguonline, I watched the entire vid.
Well that was so clever how to didn't take the whole thing to bits but just slid the HT lead in/out. I've seen other vidos and it looks such a pain, but you've proved it's pointless pain if the HT cap is small enough. I put an inline tester on last night and got RED pulsing in the window! Who knows what that is??
Thanks.

You're welcome
Another way to test the kill wire is to remove it from the coil and use an ohm meter connected to the kill wire and ground with the choke/run switch in the run position. If the ohm meter shows no connection to ground then the kill wiring is not the problem.
Bingo. Coil issues when hot. Thanks for the video
Can i order ignition for huszvarna model 254
What happens if you don't have the right gap you did with the card? I just swapped over an entire electric system and still no spark. Would the gap effect spark?

Hi, Did all this, changed the plug and removed the kill wire and still no spark. Any ideas?

If you have trouble with spark it is usually a bad plug, short in the kill wire or switch, a bad coil or an improperly gapped coil. Sounds like you have checked some of these. A bad coil is very common
hold still...lol thanks for all the information, my echo 352 won't start...cleaned the filter, changed the gas, cleaned the plug, still won't start, thanks for the info once again

Echo pet 4000 or a Lisle 20700 Spark Energy testers work well . Very easy to use and are fool-proof . 2/23
You don't have to put the recoil back on- spin it with your drill and a socket
Iworing you!You should use OEM ignition coil! This one will gave you problems.
Another video with no multmeter test
Wow, 10 bucks and a plug. Good deal

Where did you order the coil from?

I ordered that one from ebay... Not endorsing this ebay seller but I got it from happy53621_5 (2925) and it has performed well thus far.
I just learned elsewhere that the aftermarket coils often don't work.
It is difficult to be sure that it is making proper contact when trying to do it alone. shouldn't spark a little just turning it by hand, it is a lot of work when you have to put everything back together just to try it.
So you gave $50.00 for the saw and the part was $9.99 to fix it' you ended up having a total of $59.99 in the saw. I don't think you should charge yourself any $$$ for the labor especially since they threw in a free spark plug.

If you are going to make videos invest in a five dollar spark check tool
