Interim championship only means placeholder of undisputed championship when the undisputed champion is absent. It does not mean the real Championship is disputed. Most champions are disputed by contenders but this one has a belt that says "while you're not fighting me, you're disputed as a champion because of this belt, that says I'm a champion too". Interim means a time between something being appealable, which will continue to be appealable until Jon fights Tom. It's literally like a medieval civil war within the heavyweight division. There's a dispute between two different leaders and only one can come out on top. Just because the original leader defeats another random lord, it doesn't mean that the other king is going to give up his crown because of that. It ends when one king defeats the other or abdicates his throne.

Definitely not how it usually works. When Couture defended the undisputed belt against Lesnar at UFC 91, Nogueira’s Interim Belt wasn’t stripped. In fact, he defended that Interim Belt at UFC 92. When Bisping defended the Undisputed Belt against GSP at UFC 217, Whitaker wasn’t stripped of his Interim Belt. Rather his Interim Belt was promoted to Undisputed when GSP vacated.

And Ferguson was stripped of his Interim Title when Khabib & Iaquinta fought for the Vacant Title. My point is, the UFC is anything but consistent with how they have handled these situations.

None of these fights really dispute Chael's point since they were all interim champ vs undisputed champ. Not undisputed champ vs another contender instead of the interim. For examples of that where the interim champ isn't stripped you'd have to look at Big Nog being interim champ while Randy and Brock fought or Robert Whittaker being interim champ while Bisping fought GSP

I dont this has ever happened before, but i think that “the moment the bell rings the interim champion is stripped” rule only applies when its interim champ vs undisputed champ, and since jon isnt fighting tom he’d still be interim champ til they fought. And if jon does decide to retire, tom should automatically become undisputed champion and have the rematch with curtis blaydes as his first defense

There is no undisputed champ while there is an interim champ. It’s only undisputed if there is a single champion in the division. And when the bell rings there’s still two champs. It’s not until that fight is over is one of them stripped and the other becomes the undisputed champ.

In my opinion, if you get injured and somebody has to step in and fight for the interim belt, if you’re going to end up being active, the next person you fight is whoever wins that belt not who you were originally gonna fight cause at that point that belt was done for nothing you shouldn’t become active and fight. Somebody who isn’t the interim champion they’re supposed to end up being unified that completely ruins the whole purpose of the interim championship

Dana and the UFC handled the entire situation wrong. There are two ways they could/should have went about it: 1) Jones should have relinquished his title. Jiri did it, Jamahal did it. He knew he was going to be out for a loooong time and he knew he was never going to fight Aspinall or Pavlovich. So why hold up the division except for his own ego? 2) make Jones agree to keep his belt but he fights the interim champion upon his return instead of Stipe. Also, giving Stipe the shot was wrong in the first place. I dont think Stipe beats Aspinall, Pavlovich. I dont even think he brats Blaydes at this point and would struggle with the fluidity of Gane, who got his ass whooped by Jones. This was some amateur-level decisionmaking by the UFC. It shows that Dana is Jones' lapdog, not the other way around

Interim championship only means placeholder of undisputed championship when the undisputed champion is absent. It does not mean the real Championship is disputed. Most champions are disputed by contenders but this one has a belt that says "while you're not fighting me, you're disputed as a champion because of this belt, that says I'm a champion too". Interim means a time between something being appealable, which will continue to be appealable until Jon fights Tom. It's literally like a medieval civil war within the heavyweight division. There's a dispute between two different leaders and only one can come out on top. Just because the original leader defeats another random lord, it doesn't mean that the other king is going to give up his crown because of that. It ends when one king defeats the other or abdicates his throne.

Definitely not how it usually works. When Couture defended the undisputed belt against Lesnar at UFC 91, Nogueira’s Interim Belt wasn’t stripped. In fact, he defended that Interim Belt at UFC 92. When Bisping defended the Undisputed Belt against GSP at UFC 217, Whitaker wasn’t stripped of his Interim Belt. Rather his Interim Belt was promoted to Undisputed when GSP vacated.

None of these fights really dispute Chael's point since they were all interim champ vs undisputed champ. Not undisputed champ vs another contender instead of the interim. For examples of that where the interim champ isn't stripped you'd have to look at Big Nog being interim champ while Randy and Brock fought or Robert Whittaker being interim champ while Bisping fought GSP

In my opinion, if you get injured and somebody has to step in and fight for the interim belt, if you’re going to end up being active, the next person you fight is whoever wins that belt not who you were originally gonna fight cause at that point that belt was done for nothing you shouldn’t become active and fight. Somebody who isn’t the interim champion they’re supposed to end up being unified that completely ruins the whole purpose of the interim championship

Dana and the UFC handled the entire situation wrong. There are two ways they could/should have went about it: 1) Jones should have relinquished his title. Jiri did it, Jamahal did it. He knew he was going to be out for a loooong time and he knew he was never going to fight Aspinall or Pavlovich. So why hold up the division except for his own ego? 2) make Jones agree to keep his belt but he fights the interim champion upon his return instead of Stipe. Also, giving Stipe the shot was wrong in the first place. I dont think Stipe beats Aspinall, Pavlovich. I dont even think he brats Blaydes at this point and would struggle with the fluidity of Gane, who got his ass whooped by Jones. This was some amateur-level decisionmaking by the UFC. It shows that Dana is Jones' lapdog, not the other way around

Ideally it should work like that but there’s a precedence of the opposite, when Randy Couture defended his UFC heavyweight championship against Brock Lesnar while Antonio Rodrigo Noguera was interim champion(and was going to defend it against Frank Mir)
There’s been plenty of instances where there was an active undisputed champ and someone won an interim. Poirier and Gaethje before they fought khabib are the first to come to mind.
