Most all of the Drumeo videos have drummers listening through the song, making notes/charts, having multiple passes...but this video with Chad Smith was something special - he jumped right in and was awesome! Great reaction!

As a musician (not of this caliber lol...), I get how Chad can play along a song he's never heard. A lot has to do with instinct and knowledge of how songs are constructed. Little details like pauses, crescendo, intensity, counting, etc made his task easier. That was awesome :)

Exactly! With a lifetime of just jamming with people, you kinda get the feel of how a song is structured. This is the benefit of listening to a ton of different kinda music👍 Chad is an amazing musician 🤘

This is it, there's a structure that he can predict because he knows what makes a hit song and he knows the patterns.

Exactly it's like asking a 60 year old chef to cook something he doesn't know. Chances is he will probably nail it just because he knows how flavours work etc

agreed. i mean this song isnt miles away from what he does. 4 minute rock songs have a pretty familiar structure and he knows where changes are going to happen... the guess is... is it gonna be louder or quieter. its super impressive but ironically its more impressive to people in the world of this than outsiders... if that makes sense

The protocol is that the guest drummer listens to the (drumless) track at least once, maybe a few times, they make notes on time signature and transitions, then gives it his best pass. Chad 'The Chad' Smith listens to 32 seconds and lays down what is arguably a better drum line. The guy is god tier.

Chad Smith is obviously talented and his musical vocabulary is vast. He is listening to the structure of the song and predicting where it’s going to go. He has played in studios and live how many thousands of times. It’s a treat to watch him.

The joy i feel watching your faces light up to this/chad is unreal.such a nostalgic song too ..alot of people think he must have heard the song before but as a drummer (a legendary one at that) he will have a good feel for when the songs going to change, how long breaks last for etc and being able to hear the build in other instruments helps alot too...magical to watch 👌

Awesome reaction guys. Chad has 35 years of experience so he knows so much about song structures, patterns etc. The way I would relate this to our understanding is like driving a car from a professional driver's perspective. It's like once you know that it is a car, you know where the steering wheel will be, what each pedal and buttons do inside the car and how to operate them, you will know how much gas you give it and how much speed you need to turn a corner, etc.

Watch Prince live. Eric Clapton considered him a guitar god and with good reason. No one since Hendrix was the guitar showman he was. Oh, and he played most of the instruments on most of his records, sang the background and foreground vocals (Grammy winner for vocals), and wrote the songs too (Oscar for Best Score). The single most talented musician of the rock era by a WIDE margin.

I have watched people react to this at least 20 times. It never gets old. Drumeo is a fun channel to watch. What makes his try so amazing is that he just goes for it. Most of the other people usually listen to the song all the way first some even taking notes. If you watch it closer, you can tell that he is playing slightly behind. But regardless it is amazing that he did it they way he did.

Think about the waltz. 123 123 123 123. The whole song is basically in the waltz time. For Chad to recognize this and immediately hop into the song is absolutely G.O.A.T. territory.

We drummers with enough experience and knowledge of song structure can just jump right in like Chad did here. This song in particular is in 6/8 time. Which is a fun time signature to play. Other songs with a 6/8 feel are System of a Down's Toxicity, Weezer's My Name is Jonas, Jimmy Eat World's Hear You Me, Christina Perry's A Thousand Years, Queen's We Are The Champions and much more.

One of the more enjoyable reactions to this video keep it up. One you were paying enough attention to read that he had a drum less track which half of the youtubers missed. And secondly you just enjoyed the performance unlike breaking down too much like some of the drum player reviews and many commenter. Yes he's a pro drummer and and pro drummer should be able to do similar and yet he's the only one on drumeo to just jump in and one take it. 30 seconds to masterclass with 30 seconds to Mars song. He absolutely fuc$1ng nailed it.

There is another Drumeo video from the same visit I think, where he plays Give It Away by his band Red Hot Chili Peppers, and that might also be worth a reaction video. He's such a naturally talented musician. You also HAVE to now react to Chad Smith and Will Ferrell's drum-off (just so Andrei can see them both in the same room together to be sure they're different people haha).
