Chad Hasegawa, How a Fine Artist Uses House Paint: What's Your Style? | KQED Arts

Click to learn more: wp.me/p4AWsA-dk
Chad Hasegawa paints portraits of bears and notable artists, and his style is influenced heavily by the Abstract Expressionist movement, and a thrifty approach to materials. He has created murals throughout San Francisco and shown his paintings and sculptures in galleries. His work balances between abstract and figurative art, with dense, wild brushstrokes that are often pieced together to create recognizable forms.

Just a terrific video on all levels, Chad. Came to learn about using house paint on a large canvas...LOVE your take on Kline, Mitchell, MOtherwell, etc! Both inspiring and useful. Best of luck to you, love your work!

Smart man~~~love your work~~~it's amazing, you are gifted. I feel the same and I spent too much money on Golden acrylics, which was not smart on my part. I actually googled`~~'"using house paint for abstract art'" and came across your video. Gives many beginners hope, and it's crazy price for acrylics through art shops. I am 65 and used to use oils years ago, I missed painting, so I'm trying acrylics and I love them. Next time I am going to use, AcrylPro, a ceramic tile adhesive (mastic) for a gesso and can texture it too. I saw it on youtube~~~maybe they don't carry that brand here, but there should be something similar. Thanks for sharing your smart ideas and art work.

You get an instant thumbs-up just for referencing Franz Kline - one of my own influences and absolute favorites. The Motherwell ref did ya no harm, either. Good stuff, Mister Chad! :-)

Awesome!!! When you paint on canvas do you prime it first? Also, does house paint colors mix well together? And, what brands are better than others? Thank you for sharing your art!

Oops another question! Have you ever or can you add a medium to house paint to thicken the paint? Can you use house paint to do palette knife impasto paintings? Again, thanks

Unusual name; Lane Nakano played the part of Shiro Hasagawa (slightly different spelling) in the 1952 movie, "Japanese War Bride". It's peculiar how some names stick in one's memory.

any 5 year old can do abstract art. i'm having a hard time seeing any value in, and not only for the fact that it's too easy but also because there is nothing to say about it.
