Aloha Patrick and Stuart, little by little I’m catching up with your Chateau beginnings and journeys. Bravo for everything 🏰👏🏼🌻.

Good evening from Normandy. Your cast iron filial is called a spear and is a decorative element from an ornate iron gate. It would have been situated on top of a upright picket called a baluster. The baluster being the vertical support for the ornamental railing at the top of the gate. It would have been part of a pair. The design is reminiscent of a fleur de lis. You might consider finding a local iron monger who could restore the spear and mount it on a poker for an open fire.

Hi Mary. Thank you and we are so lucky to have this hydrangea in the front. We planted a second one yesterday on the other side of the same wing with a summer blooming wisteria behind it. You know what would be cool? If you would show us one room at a time (regardless of what condition it's in) and tell us your thoughts/plans for the space. Even the attic, outbuildings, outdoor spaces, etc. I know you did a tour, but I'd love to see more, to really absorb and become part of it. It may not seem interesting to you but it is to us. Hello dear David. Thank you so very much. The front doors, although painted in satin, are so shiny and looking polished. It looks very pretty. Currently at the back door. It makes such a difference. The back door wasn’t painted in 20 years the way it is deteriorated. The flowers are a hydrangea that we are fortunate to have. Hugs from us in Colombe

Thank you gentlemen for thinking about all us east coast water logged Australian's. Is been 6 days and nights of continuous heavy rain. The dog still has to be walked daily, so the absolutely sodden golf course has been the go to. She has had a blast running wild and free, the mud and stench removal has been another issue, but, live and let live. Love the show, I so look forward to Thursday morning with a nice hot cuppa and a chateau update. Stay well and happy xxxx

It's so nice to see you guys settling in. There is a level of stress that seems to have lifted. So glad. Lots of work ahead, but that means you're making it your own. The dogs looked content and happy to explore. Electrical sockets are a big deal, and I look forward to seeing what runner you all find. I would imagine that runner rods may be in the corner of some brochante. Pleased that you have family coming to see you. It lifts the spirit.

Hello Kristen. Your comment made us pause and reflect and you are right. A thick layer of stress has been lifted. Some smaller bumps in the road are to be expected. But they are not stressful. We are looking forward to the work as it is a bit like therapy and it gets us closer to our dream. 😊. The sockets are not yet connected and I’m giddy regardless. 😂. We can imagine the finished entry hall and dining room (all other rooms are up for grabs) and it feels great.

We actually found quite a few rods in one of the closets in the blue room. So happy. The staircase on the left side also had a runner, so we can pick two!!! We know we want one but have not spent a single thought on it because then we’ll both spend hours searching…. 😳 we are looking forward to family coming. It’s going to be a fun time. There will be bigger Brocantes around on July 14th( National Day in France) and Touchay usually have a big Brocante with some good stuff. I think your treasure is very pretty and it looks like a doorknob to me. Glad to see John has been busy for you and thanks for the lovely vlog

Hi Deb. We are lucky and have a pond on our property. It is across from the farm and we have multiple spots where even honey bees are drinking. It is amazing. We will have more bird spots in the future. Great thought and comment. Thank you. 🥰

Hi there. I remember the episode with the copper pots. We will try to buy pots that are perfect. We are happy to vlog for the Chateau de Colombe now. The weather is perfect and we get work done with our stress. Stuart will post the recipe in the community section. 👍🏻. I’d love a whole wall with hydrangeas and we already have the wall for it……. We have sunflowers around us in many fields. Gorgeous. Copper vase with them….. Devine! The door was not cared for much but the other doors are way worse.

Hi guys, love your vlogs. I’m from Sydney and happy to say the rain has stopped but the flooding continues in areas near rivers and creeks. For lots of residents near those areas it’s the fourth time it’s happened in 18 mths and they have lost everything! Very sad for them!

Please stay safe. It is unbelievable that there were 4 floods in 18 months. We feel the same way for all those poor people who have lost everything. The rivers will still rise for a few days. As for the color for the door, we debated that. We decided on brilliant white to go with the shutters and windows. However, the mayor and neighbors had very strong opinion and were partial to white. Se we are trying to be nice neighbors. 😘🥰🥰😘

Of all of the comments I could make, there was one thing I especially noticed. Patrick, you must be the neatest painter. I couldn’t see a speck on you. 😉 Happy Birthday to both of you! My daughter’s is the 14th. So you see, your adopted country had her revolution and I had mine.

The doors have are almost 400 years old and had countless layers of paint. The hardware is mostly riveted and cannot be taken down so that has to be stripped in place. It is very satisfying to see the progress. I have now applied the first coat on the back door….. that was in worse shape! 😮😳. Thank you for your comment and for watching our journey. Looking good guys. You may be busy but your looking rested. I like how your keeping the front door not perfectly painted and keeping the aged character look of the chateau. We had finches nesting in one of our birdhouses. I enjoy watching them but I think the babies have left the nest now. I do enjoy a good morning and evening bird song also. Hello my dear Peter. Thank you so much. We are much more rested and relaxed. The new or completely reworked doors in old homes always look wrong, unless it is a home that is completely modern. We always love the birds. We have sparrows in a hole under a window of the chateau. We’ll fill that in the fall, when there is no risk of killing chicks.

Thank you so much. We have some strong ideas and plans……. They can change, of course. The currently pink salon with be back to Louis XV and the blue salon will be green with the Napoleon I furniture. And the hall will be in slacked lime colored paint with mid dark French Gray trim and doors……. Some gilded furniture and a tall gold framed mirror…. Ok, I have to stop. Thank you again.

Evening Patrick & Stuart, great to have you back telling us more of your d.i.y's., you should have given a more detailed description of the weed recipe. Unfortunately I am a person I have to have the exact ingredients to make things work. Regardless, yes the hydrangea is really gorgeous, try for some deep blue ones as well. The mop heads are fabulous!! The sunflowers in the field was breath takingly beautiful imagine a an old copper vase filled with those beauties. I was thinking a lovely stripe canvas canopy over the front door, it would save the wood from the summer sun, the door was really weather beaten. There is a copper store somewhere, this man restores copperware and he also sells restored copper ware at a discounted price. Worth while to pay him a visit, a very enthusiastic French man :) Dick and Angel paid him a visit - Chateau Diaries fame - it seems to me you have now settled in as you are so much more relaxed, the dogs are looking great and they seem very happy, and very content at their new home. Just as I tuned in to watch your video we had a power outage for 3 and half hours. So grateful I could finish watching, always a treat to hear your latest news. Do take care, kind regards, Elize.

Great work on the front door and I love the fact that your chateau restorations will be Sympathetic to the age and a restoration more than a renovation! The mystery ‘spear’(?) looks to me very much like the ones on metal fence railings etc but I am no expert so I’m sure someone will know the exact purpose for it. 🏰🥰

The additions will be more of a renovation to make the areas more livable and practical for us (they have been altered Amy times already ). And definitely a sympathetic approach. Hi Patrick & Stuart. Great to see you both in high spirits. At the end of this vlog! It got me thinking about how far you’ve both come. Your sitting outside your chateau in the same way you did back in the USA. Just now In front of flowers and a near 500 year home rather than inside in front of your drinks cabinet🤣. Again thank you both for sharing your journey. 💕 Initially I thought the ornament you found may have been something ceremonial that would of once of been on top of a staff. As it seemed to have a rounded piece at the bottom that would hold it on top of it as well as the stake that would go inside. But then thought maybe they could be ornamental door stops?? Whom knows😂 Your both like the sail and anchor as your shirts show them. Also the cups you bought matched the colour of your navy blue top Patrick. I also use the vinegar, salt and dishwasher liquid solution for my weeds. Works a treat. As always looking forward to every vlog. And thank you for your consideration regarding the floods in NSW. I’m in QLD that has suffered also. But those in some areas of NSW have had 3 major flood events in as many months, which is devastating. Sadly moneys are sent elsewhere! so many whom live and pay taxes will have to just deal with it, as not big news and headlines for government. 😢

That ornament is amazing. As you said, who knows but what a lovely little find. I’m thinking about asking my dad to turn it into a garden ornament. Isn’t the vinegar and salt amazing? Safe for the dogs too. And it’s true, the mugs almost match my eyes. Thanks for noticing, since I didn’t. 😮. It is always sad when support is needed but the government doesn’t help. Hi, here is how to remove old paint from hardware. Place the hardware in the crockpot. Cover with water, add a couple of tablespoons of liquid laundry detergent, and turn the heat to medium. Put on the lid and let the contents of the pot cook all night. The next day, the paint will be soft and ready to fall off the metal.

We cannot do this for the locks because of the interior locking mechanics, and most of the hardware cannot be removed to go into a crockpot since it is attached with the original handmade nails and can't be removed. But we could do this for smaller removable hardware pieces. Thanks!

You will eventually triumph over French bureaucracy!! :-) The door looks great, just right, in fact! The little victories will win the war! (Now, if I would just practice what I preach! LOL!) The flea markets are fun, if not often productive... proper shops often give better rewards, but at higher prices. Good for you to be seen and to see the locals, you never know who you might meet!! I like the dog-friendly herbicide. Hope it works!!

Hello my dear friend Larry. Right now the bureaucracy is winning the war. We have an option and I’ll email you about it. We love the door result. I have done the same at the back door. That one was neglected many more years. That was rough. First coat of paint is on. Yay. We have participated in a French auction. Also via email! But you know us at auctions! We love to support our communities and have joins an association that furthers sports clubs and organizations for youth. There is one huge Brocante/antiques market coming up in Touchey on July 24. Can’t wait. Now, I have heard that you are getting up latest tomorrow and start a project 😂🤣😂. But really, you do whatever you like!!! You’ve earned it. The 14% vinegar works like a charm. I’ll repaint, when I have repaired and sanded the kitchen door. 2 door for the price of one 🤣 Wasps are a pain. We have one nest in a small outbuilding between the ceiling and the roof. I need to repair the roof but that has to wait now. Not risking being stung! We will work in the yard some more. Me continuing to mow. Looking into the purchase of a lawn tractor and a cherry picker. The picker to repair the roofs. We bought the tallest ladder we could find and it’s still short of reaching the upper gutters….. We are very kindly invited to La Lande by Stephanie and Philip tonight. That is so kind and we are really excited. Don’t overdo it and if you run out of paint jobs, come on over 🤪🤣🤪. Hugs

Good job on the doors and hardware! I like seeing the restoration begin at the front door and into the foyer. It just seems the natural thing to do. Also, moving up the kitchen reno on the calendar since that’s where you’ll spend the majority of your time. My thoughts exactly. You seem to both have been able to take a deep breath after the frantic days of The Great Move and to actually laugh at the car registration fiasco. Hello my darling Ginny. 😘. It felt the same way to us. Foyer and staircase needed to be first. The we will work our way out from there, except the kitchen. We cannot wait! It’s going to be a lovely bright country kitchen. With all the chateau trimmings……. Need to find a used La Cornue or like stove…. The car is so minor and yes, we are being aware that we have to be mindful to let go of the hectic US lifestyle. Not that I didn’t love my 22 years in the USA. Love the blood pressure reference. Dyson makes a cordless vacuum that doesn't weigh that much. My daughter has dogs and loves hers - she uses it on carpet, wood floors and furniture also....
