Château de la Grifferaie: S5, E23: "The Storm Before the Storm"

Plan was to have a light week before we launch into the next 7 months.... But Storms happen, and having a chateau is no easy task.

Consider getting a couple of cats to patrol the attics - yes they may kill a couple of mice or birds at first, but very quickly their scent and reputation will become just the repellant you need. And remember, all animals protect their dens, nests etc - that's not evil, it's hardwired into the brains of all animals.

This was one of my favorite update videos from you, the good and the bad. I'm sorry you're still having so many leaking issues. It would really be nice to stop that leaking so you could use some of the upper floor. The walk through the flowering garden was so nice and I always enjoy Mr. Bingly. Thank you so much for sharing this video and your thoughts. ❤

When Rob was on the roof trying to take care of the leaks: "I am feeling a little optimistic". Two seconds later... "I got bird poop on my hands" ah the life of a chateau owner. Not quite as glamorous as some might think. I appreciate that you guys leave those parts in when editing so we get a fuller picture 😂

A few suggestions- 1. We had a similar issue with mice at a home we purchased that was vacant for 3 years prior to our purchase. We got a cat. Problem solved. 2. Leaks- we had a similar issue on that as well, even after a new roof, like you. Turns out we had small settlement cracks in the motor and in stone areas. In the video I saw lots of chips in stucco and cracks in the bricks when you were down in the roof valley. I suggest a good Mason repointing and/or stucco those. Or you could attempt to save funds 3. Hole- that hole in the corner, at the bottom of that one valley where the roof battens where exposed is a huge issue. Both for animals and rain. Especially, the rain. Roofers should not have left that exposed. With that valley just above it that is a big problem that can be made worse quickly Hope this helps or at least confirms some ideas you already had. Keep up the great work and ministry. Michael

Gallon of Vinegar, 1 cup of salt and 1 tbsp of dish washing liquid in a spray container for the weeds, beats Roundup. Safe for animails. Do it on a sunny day.

ROUNDUP IS TOXIC!🏴‍☠️ I 💯% Agree! This combo of Distilled White Vinegar, Table Salt & Dawn Liquid ABSOLUTLY WORKS! We have a good-sized property & always treat it to the best of our ability. And we desire to be good stewards of the land God has blessed us with. Also, there are class action lawsuits against RoundUp due to cancer and other illnesses. We think the chateau is beautiful, too. Mr Bingly's not keeping up with the wild animals, maybe he needs help, he is just a little guy. A few cats, a Great Pyrenees. I believe empathy remains one of the most crucial virtues that define our humanity. It is an essential component of building strong relationships, fostering understanding, and creating a more compassionate society. You wouldn't catch me on that slate roof!

I believe there are programs or apps that allow you to import photos of old negatives that will set them proper for you. You could use a window or light table to get the photo. The gentlemen (Patrick & Stuart) at Journey to the Chateau did it somehow, maybe they can point you in the right direction! As for the valley, clear Flex Seal or there is tar you can get and apply even when wet that works really well. I can only imagine your frustration. Yay for student arrival, let the fun, personal growth, and friendships begin. ❤

Leslie, I think your the sweetest kindest woman but we all only know what we know. I want to kindly share my thoughts with you. The young people of this world are being bombarded with too many fragrance's and toxins. Think about how many things have fragrance, shampoo, lotions, laundry soap, hand soap, candles, air freshners, etc. The fragrance are endocrine disrupters and effect the hormones of your students. Just something to consider when purchasing scented trash bags. Then I got to the part of the video with Rob using Round Up and I just came back to say never mind. We all have different mind sets. The two of you do so much good in the world for the kids. I will go back to my lane.

I feel your pain! My husband and I bought a 124 year old home 3 years ago in Illinois and had a new roof put on immediately. A garage was added to the existing house about 30 years ago. There were no signs that there had been any leaks. About a month after the new roof was put on, we got a heavy rain, and low and behold, about 3 leaks appeared in the garage. We called the roofer and he tried different things to stop the leaks. Nothing worked. After about a year he gave up and said it was coming from behind the siding. So we gave up trying to find somebody else to find the problem and now Home Depot buckets live in 3 locations in our garage! Hope you eventually get your leaks fixed!🤞

The rhododendrons are wonderful! Add so much color to your 'woods'. That 'torch' light bulb is beautiful, as is the alabaster lamp. I can never get enough of that dining room ceiling, and agree that lower light creates a great ambience. Whew! I was so nervous the entire time you were out on the roof, Rob! And that ladder on the catwalk? >:0 Your guardian angel was with you. Diagnosing roof leaks is such a challenge. In that one spot it was clear to me the metal flashing at one time met the stone and was fine until the big chunk of stone fell out leaving that gap. I appreciate your views re: egocentric behavior. It has been the cause of so much destruction. Love, love those glass negatives! Hot air balloons were a thing during the 1800s. What a fantastic set of images. Best of luck with your final preparations. :)

Hey Rob and Leslie, great job. Everything’s looking really good. on your mouse issue we ended up switching to a small have a heart trap, which we purchased at our local garden supply store. Then we just take them for a long ride in the countryside and let them loose in some field. Good job with setting your fears aside and walking out onto the roof. We always have to remember that fear is good and it keeps us from hurting ourselves.

I completely understand your thinking Rob. When I’m watching a movie and an animal gets hurt I feel it in my heart. I’ve become desensitized to people being hurt in movies but not animals. It really weighs on my heart and mind. I especially hate when I’m scrolling through Facebook and there’s a picture of an abused or immaciated animal because I literally start to cry so I try to scroll quickly through them but sometimes I’m not quick enough and I hear this dying animal whimper and begging for help and it breaks my heart. I just start sobbing. I don’t understand how people can treat animals as if they’re disposable.

If it was a soft rain the leaking would be more insipid. Your talk about egocentricity helped me think about something that I’m working through. Thank you.

You both have done such a good job getting the Chateau ready for the students this summer! I am so sorry that your roof is still giving you problems. I do hope that your "owl friend" is helping keep the birds out. Part of the problem is that you now live in the country. In the country it is just different. No matter where you are in the world, there will be more wildlife trying to get in. Do not feel bad about the mice. they can get out of hand very quickly! All the other wildlife eats them. They do have a purpose in this world. We have several cats that help keep them away. (the mice do not like the smell of cats) Plus I think that they do catch the mice too. Member that your house was not lived in fora while. That is when the wildlife tries to get in. Please have a good week!

Perhaps you can get those negatives printed. It may throw some light on the history of the chateau.

There is a heavy responsibility to all living things, not just humans, including the cumulative things we call Nature and Earth. Too many humans running around on the planet believing all these things are here for our use, but it has become abuse over past generations. It is like that special power tool that you buy to use for many future projects. If you don't take care of it, each and every time, then the tool will break/fail, and it will no longer be available when you need it most. Apply that concept to the Earth and Nature. No human survives when either break.

Scary on the roof, so brave!! I'd look around for a photo shop that would make those glass negatives into prints for you. Love all the flowers blooming. I've released many an animal/bird but mice sorry can't live with them. If the cat stuns or kills them, it's a McDonald's cup over the top and cardboard under and tossed out the back door. They take their chance when they invaded my territory. We did take a possum for a ride and released further out into the country. Thank goodness for snapdown lids on garbage cans. We've got a raccoon to deal with this spring. The stinkers dig up the garden and flower pots looking for grubs or something. I have resorted to yelling at them. I don't believe in guns or they would have to make a run for their lifes!!

Beautiful alabaster lamp! And thanks for sharing the different technologies in Europe. I know people save a little money with LED lights but the constant digital switching isn't good for your eyes. Also the limited color spectrum isn't good for your health 😕 and doesn't put the beautiful chateau in the best light. Analog incandescents have the full spectrum (if clear glass bulbs you can see the little rainbows 🌈 on the wall) and have an emphasis on the warm wavelengths which are good at night to help you prepare for sleep and heal (near infrared A recharges your mitochondria). We use digital frequency to kill and analog frequency to heal. So feel free to use the incandescents and the added heat is a bonus in the cooler weather! Thanks for sharing all the details and mechanical systems too... so interesting... a piece of history!

Regarding mice - you have plenty of land plus the stables. Mice in the house is poor stewardship of the house. Balancing act.

Have you considered using vinegar as a weed and grass killer? I use it straight in a sprayer. I don’t dilute it with water. Makes my garden smell like a salad! lol.

Thank God you had the roof redone. I can't imagine the leaks that would be happening. Unfortunately with that complicated roof and the size of the roof you are going to have to deal with leaks.....not a pleasant thought but reality. Hopefully you can be able to get help getting things set up for the students.

Rob the mice have the entire area around the Chateau. I really think you need to get some rescue kitties and give them a home on the upper floor. Then they can take care of the mice. Mice droppings are very dangerous to humans. They will eat through wiring in the house and vehicles, they will eat books, fabric, wall paper, and anything they can get to. I know it is hard, but they need to go.

There are live mouse traps that you can use to catch and release, you just need to check them daily. They work well. :)
