An alternative translation for the 'whole life confidant' line is 'soulmate'. They are soulmates, and whilst the show couldn't be super explicit it's romantic as heck and it makes a weirdly pure romance because they have to use inference and implication. It's an epic about two soulmates and it is excellent.

They're definitely 'an item' in the novel, but in the drama it's a bit ambiguous to get past Chinese censors. I think you can definitely feel their love though, even if they aren't physically intimate in the show

whole life confidant more accurately captures the literal meaning of the chinese word used than soulmate does. soulmate is just the word that is available to us in english. there's a cool post titled "all right guys, let's have a conversation about soulmates" that dives into the meaning of 知己 zhiji. it's really informative if anyone wants to check it out!

Soulmate doesn't capture the meaning of it. Are you even Chinese? To say what he meant is soulmate is wrong. That word is most often used to describe friendship but let's just say a little more meaningful than that. It's literally translations is "know me". Meaning someone who understood him for who he really is and can be dependant on. "A lifelong friend who know me the way I know myself" is a more accurate interpretation.

Yeah, it's a gay romance. In the manga and novel, they are sexually and romantically intimate, but in the anime and live action especially, because of China's anti-gay laws, their romance is lots of staring, quiet conversations, and music crescendos, but other characters will look at them and smile, or tease one of them about the other, because they know they are in love. The shows has several gay romances, but they are all low-key in order to avoid penalties by the government. The straight relationships and gay relationships are treated with the same low level of intimacy in order to highlight that they are the same thing. The only people who kiss or show PDA are the evil straight romances.

the fact that you genuinely felt the romance from just this one video proves that the actors and production team really did their job perfectly in portraying an lgbtq romance that could make it past censorship while still being obviously romantic

You should watch the show even if you don't react to it here. It's by far one of the most beautiful love stories I've watched. They managed to brought to life this story, even with all the restrictions the country has, and to me that was so brave of them (the actors and whole crew). It's been so long since I've watched this for the first time, and till this day I still can't move on. And of course the acting is amazing, the soundtracks are just beautiful and the cinematography is incredible. This is my fav drama/show/series from all the ones I've watched in my whole life.

Exactly what I love about it! The love is extremely pure! If we get a BL, it’s so focused on it fetishising same sex relationships. But LZ and WY just happened so naturally. It was so pure and sacred.

the show does have 50 episodes which can seem like a lot but I swear when you get to like episode 30 you start wanting more and more and for the show to never end.

The Untamed is my favourite C drama. The 2 male leads are lovers and their love is so pure and beautiful. Although I’m not a fan of BL, I love them and love the Untamed😍

The story is phenomenal. The live adaptation was able to sneakily slide in so many references to their romantic love and still amazingly didn’t get cancelled or kept from airing. My husband and I watched it together and we still send each other memes about it and the characters. He even painted the two main characters on a canvas as a surprise for me. It hangs about our dining table. The actors cast to portray Lan WangJi (Wang Yibo) and Wei WuXian (Xiao Zhan) were perfectly, expertly cast. I honestly can’t think of anyone that could have brought these characters to life the way they did. It’s part of why I think I’ll always be stuck on this story. Every adaptation is slightly different but they are all stunning.

Lan Zhan and Wei Ying are so very in love! Chinese censorship laws won't allow it to be explicitly shown, but in the original novel they end up married and living happily ever after. The censorship issue is frustrating, but it forced the production to find ways to show the relationship through subtext, and they carried it off exceptionally and created something really special. Also, I must say, though it is a love story, it's also so much more, it's also a murder mystery, an action adventure and epic fantasy, it has elements of comedy and horror, it addresses social and family issues that are universal and deeply relatable .. above all, it's just entertaining, the characters are complex and well written and the pacing is perfect, there's never a dull moment. If you like this FMV, I must rec Don't want to fall in love by solariene, and A Thousand Years Ver.2 by myhappiness 9394 (version 1 is also good) The Untamed fandom has so many talented fans and amazing fan creations, it's almost an embarrassment of riches, I'd be so excited to see you react to more!

Whilst they are an item in the BL novel, they are the best of friends (deep friendship) in the drama adaptation 'The Untamed'. Excellent drama, one of the best I have ever seen.

The Untamed was a masterpiece, a turning point for both XZ and YB's career, this was adapted from a BL novel. There's actually more BL novels that has live adaptations the thing is they didn't pass, they can't air, China's very strict rn especially because after 2 successful BL novels adapted to series that was aired there was always a harm to the lead actors

Take the time to watch the whole series. I was traumatized by buildup of grief/trauma Wei Ying goes through up to about halfway through (episode 28), but everything is woven together by the end. You experience so many emotions that it’s WAY beyond “are they together”. It’s more like why CAN’T/SHOULDN’T they be together. Just a wonderful series as a whole. 👍🏻👍🏻

Anyways thank you so much for taking the time to watch the video, I am a simple editor who started doing fanvideos all the way back in 2006. I usually just put scenes together from my favorite shows or movies. The Untamed here is one of my favorite all time TV shows. It's based of a Chinese novel. Alas, you are right they are an item, but as for China, they are not ready for that to be on TV yet... so the show was very regulated and most of us are even amazed that the scenes that did go through made it through the harsh censorship in China. Also it is very hard to show only so little in 4½ minutes when the show is 50 episodes. So it is mainly focused around Lan Zhan (Blue/bright clothes) and Wei Ying (Dark/black clothes) and how they they were after Wei Ying basically comes back to life years later falling/jumping off the cliff. He does so because he has abandoned all hope and fell like no one believes him or is on his side anymore. Anyways thank you so much for watching my humble video. I can recommend another video to the show I did with 2 friends to a song called Let It All Go.

In the book they become an item right before the end of the story. In the Chinese censored tv series where being gay on screen is illegal, they are just really good friends. Though they make out pretty course the guy in White really REALLY likes the guy in black. It’s all just sorrowful or affectionate gazes and the occasional wrist grabs. Though there are chickens. 🤣

It’s a nice drama .I watched it . Xiao Zhan is one of my favorite Chinese singer and actors.

I know nothing about you or whether you would watch it… but if you have an inclination to try the series out, it’s really good. 50 episodes of Chinese subs can seem daunting if you don’t usually watch that kind of thing but before you know it you will wish there was more. This was based off the book and the whole cast was selected impeccably so besides out two main amazing leads, the supporting cast is amazing. The storyline, the emotions, the drama, the cliffhangers (literally 😂🙈) the love, the death, the betrayal, our cute little Ah-Yuan and the Junior cultivators. There are so many reasons to watch it. Also, despite China’s heavy censorship, this was one of the best shows to just say’f*ck it’ if we can’t say we are lovers, we are darn well going to do everything to make sure you know what we mean and how we feel… and somehow that was so much more heart-rending!

I have watched this drama 6 times and I'm still some times crave to watch it again my favourite couple

You will receive different responses from persons who only watched the series as opposed to those who have read the novel, watched the Donghua, or read the saucy graphic novels. The screenwriters were limited as to portrayal of the relationship due to Chinese Government censorship. At the of the novel Wangi and Wei are in love and having passionate ‘Every Day Means Every Day” time.😮 Personally, It seems the series, while not explicitly stating it implies the two men are deeply in love -A love that surpasses family, friends, law, the affections of other women or men- they are one in spirit. So your perception that the characters are closer than the rather random term of Soulmate is right on.

I really hope you watch the series! The series super long, episodes are almost an hour each, wetv posted the specials on KZread that have extra scenes, but you will not regret it! I’ve watched this over 10 times at least. These 2 actors in particular made this series, imo…. Any other leads and it wouldn’t have been as impactful. The manhua tells the full story and it gets … intense but also still worth the read and it’ll tell their full life story together.

They are in love in novel, but in drama there is almost nothing about it. Without a love story fantasy plot of the drama is so good! There are a lot of fighting and clans, it’s just interesting to watch.

I really hope you react to more Untamed videos. There are so many good ones. Both serious like this one and more fun or romantic ones. And they are all great. It was such a big hit so i checked it out to see what was the big deal and in the first few episodes i wasn't really feeling it, it seemed just a regular chinese fantasy drama but i kept watching cause some things in the first episode kinda intrigued me, i really wanted to know what was up with that and how those events came to be and THEN unexpectedly i was just uncontrollably weeping when i was halfway through. This show absorbs you and breaks you. You will never recover. So run while you still have a chance! /kidding. Don't miss out on this masterpiece, bro. Watch it. maybe you can react to the series the storytelling is so good :') the acting, the music, everything except the cgi sometimes but that's a non-issue bcs everything else is just that good. and it's actually even better when you know the story and spoilers etc because it's such an experience to understand every little detail and the choices the characters make once you know the spoilers. it's essentially the "how" more than the "what" imo. but do check out the series even if you don't post the reactions. storytellingwise it's just such a masterpiece because when you watch it the first time, several scenes and actions and dialogues and even silences don't make much sense but once you know what happens and are acquainted with the characters and their traits, every single shot has so much artistic value

it's especially fun piecing everything together once you know what happens because again, the storytelling is just that good and it relies so much on the viewer that even on a 5th rewatch, you'll still notice details you didn't before that will keep adding more meaning to the characters and the plot

Yes they are canonly a married cople, the untamed is a live action of the novel "Mo Dao Zu Shi" ( Master of the demonic cultivation) from the autor Mo Xian Tong Xiu Who has witren 3 BL novel counting this one. Just that since China is homophobic the laws don't ley them confim a homosexual relationship on TV so if You watch the anime ir the live action You won't see a confirmación. But still Wang Yibo an Xiao Zhang make a Greta job with their expresions and corporal lenguaje
