To all of the people trying to find the meaning of the story, that’s just it: the meaning is to make up your own. Your own meaning in life, your own meaning in thought, your own meaning in the message. Be original, creative, independent, and so on. You don't have to follow just one idea or believe in one meaning, because there ISN’T just one.

Something interesting: The guy, overall, is characterized by the colour blue, for example by his blue eyes, his clothes, the book he has or the bird that likely symbolizes a part of him. The girl is characterized by the colour violet, her clothes and fish share this colour. The other people are all grey, the only colour we can see on them is coming from their red books. But their is another person, of whom we know the face (the only other person in the animation, that has a face) and that is the big guy (the girls father?). He, overall, seems grey, but he wears a red scarf and has a red handkerchief. But what I find really interesting is the girl and "her" colour, violet. Why? Because violet is mixed up from blue and - you guessed it - red. What makes me think. Maybe she is like a "link" between the contrasting worlds of blue and red, knowing both sides (which the guy may not, maybe he was "born an outcast") but in the end, she chose blue. I really like the animation, it makes me think and is really well done.

Salbei17 I didn't even consider the colour choice here. Thinking further into it, perhaps the man selling books isn't just a book store owner. The book store is a symbol, perhaps of mass media in general. Where many people get their information, opinions, and overall personalities. This man is an authority, like how he seems to be the only person the greys recognize and listen to. Red is his colour, the lava monster is his bird/fish, and most other people adopt the red as their own. Again, because he controls media. Mass media also has a nasty habit of consuming things like lava, but the ocean is often all that can stop lava. Hence the girl being such a threat. The bookstore own is perhaps not her father necessarily, but he certainly wants to control her because, as you put it, she's in between worlds and thus works as a bridge of sorts. Maybe?

this is why people with disabilities, autism, adhd and other things alike are important; they stand out and are themselves alot more than normal people. if someone wants to have a conversation with you about their interest; let them go on! as an autistic person, it feels so nice when someone is interested and listens to you go on and on about your interest! for example, i and go on for an hour about cats, their breeds and fun little things about them.

In my opinion this represents a society that forces you to follow their rules, which are not necessary based on love and acceptance. It is a society that obliges you to be like the others, it makes people the same so that 'crossing the line'/ beeing different/ unique is strict illegal (it reminds me of communism). The boy is different; he has a blue book and doesn't wants to take part of that monoton society. When he finds the girl being as him they begin to fight against that world, even if they have to face obstacles (e.g: the girl becoming for a while part of the red society). At the end with the power of love, strong personality, determination they succeed in keeping their own characters unchanged. Their 'spiritual animals'(their souls) reunite so that they can't get corrupted anymore.

  • @Renserin

Pretty much what I was thinking, though I wouldn't attach any particular symbolism to the red book, other than it simply represents the current dogma. Though I do find the comment above about her purple to be a blend between red and blue, almost as interesting it it's own right.

This was really good reminded me of Paperman from the Disney shorts , and I understood the meaning of what was happening; the people with the red books were prejudice and plain well the two with the bluebooks were adventurous idealistic people. And reading the red books will take that away from them and they tried to stay who they are especially the guy and he tried to get that to her to never stop are. I definitely can relate I really liked it I'm keeping this is in one of my favourites I will come back to watch it again

I've never felt so deeply in tune with an animation before. And that's saying something, because I've been emotionally affected by an awful lot of animations in my time. Beautiful representation of those who go against the grain, following their dreams and embracing who they are as a person even though all of society (or just the people around them) rejects their uniquity and tries to force them to conform to the herd...

This says to me how, in a world full of conventions and rules binding everyone together (or in other words, how everyone should be the same), you should never be afraid to be yourself and look beyond the norm with imagination. That's why I write and read, so I relate to this on a personal level. BEAUTIFUL animation. The art, the music, the moral, EVERYTHING. Sharing this immediately, since it needs even more views. :D

Maybe it's just social norms. The two with the blue books are sticking out, so they are shunned, pushed away by everyone else. Then they meet each other, and realize they aren't alone, but just as they meet one is forced to conform, and the other is left alone again, until the one that was forced breaks free from standards and they are together again.

I LOVE this story. It portrays how society treats the out siders in a perfect manner. Artists, gamers, KZreadrs, writers, and other groups are seen in negative light because the older less open tv media makes fun of them. The representations are beautiful and deep. I can only dream of getting to this kind of level. "Average" people don't understand artist. Most think that artist starve for money unable to support their families or themselves for that matter when in actuality any person in any job can be confronted with this kind of problem. My mom supports my decision to draw and write. My father on the other hand is extremely old fashioned even if he thinks otherwise. He changes the subject when I talk about art or literature or even KZread and the community. The ONLY thing he use KZread for is to listen to his horrible music. Unaware of the communities or fan bases of KZreadrs. That's why stuff like this can help. We need to get out there and use our voices!

I’m pretty sure the books are just a metaphor for something different. The red book represents the mass majority of the population and their points of views The blue represents just a handful of people who are scared to share their opinions to the world knowing they’ll face backlash. The whole lesson of this, I believe, is don’t be afraid to stand out and be different

I really liked this film. From my point of view, he talks about a society, a dystopic society, which forces its habitants to read rudimentary, but not entertaining, things. The protagonist is not like the others since he has decided for himself to read what he wants, fantastic and wonderful things and not boring and rudimentary reading. He can't stay that long, as society pressures him to join them and read the same as them. She meets a girl who is just like him, but they force her to follow others. Moral: Being different is better than being like everyone else.

Wow. I am floored by the beauty of this animation. I love the use of symbolism to tell a great message of what a truely healthy and happy relationship is. It's about finding someone who accepts you for your true colors, rather than trying to follow other people's colors; in return you love her/him in return for his/her true colors. The boy, Charlie saw that in the girl, and wanted to lift her out of the oppression of her father (or whoever that is) in order for her to feel confident in showing her true colors, that he instantly felt a connection with. In the end, the boy's blue and the girl's pink blend beautifully together, creating a great symbol of friendship and/or true romance. As for the film itself, I was mezmerized by the fluid animation, the gorgeous art direction and character designs, the wonderful music, and the overall charming tone that this film sets. Beautiful work, amazing job :)

@@mightbeahuman3442 YES. That's exactly right. Angelus_Solus is spot-on. It's hard to articulate, but I understand what they're saying because I feel like that's where I am. The only reason I register to a party is because I have to, and I chose the party that is more likely to allow change than the other, but I'm not really affiliated with either. This is more true now than ever, and I know I'm not the only person in this position. I can understand why you may have interpreted this as a reference to the balance between the two parties, though. The system is rigged in such a way that the default is "one or the other", but there are more choices that we're just not able to see until we start looking. We, the people, are kind of like children stuck being forced to choose between Mommy and Daddy so fiercely that we forget to consider that Grandpa is an option too. I hope that analogy makes sense. I hope I understood Angelus correctly.

In that place everyone was reading and engulfed in the book of hate or just hate and the guy and girl both read the book of love. But when the book of hate was pushed in her hands she was being tempted into becoming hateful and monster-ish, to follow the path of hate, that's why it was terrible when she began walking on the same path as the others. The obstacles he faced represented the obstacles anyone faces when they are facing haters.Being bullied and hard times like that. When he let go of the book that showed him giving up the only thing that kept him separate, the book of fantasy or unreality of love, without it the world was bleak and miserable making you turn to hate, but he was willing to give up his shield to save her from being engulfed by hate.Him sort of drowning was portraying him just being sad I think, falling into not hate, but misery.I don't need to explain the rest. :P

What I love about this story and how it's told is that it's done in such a way that it's structured enough to get a solid idea of the story but vague and free enough that said story can be personally interpreted and individualized to the point that it can mean something entirely different to every single person watching and hit home for a lot of different people. It's cool to scroll down and see so many different interpretations and think "hey I could see that, thats a interesting way to look at that." And to just see that each of these different interpretations have value and especially mean something to the person saying them. I freaking loved this short.

This seems like the great depression era. Where one man rules the ppl, taking away their individuality, forced to only wear and read and do as he says. It seems like a conformity, but you cannot take away the essence of everyone. This is why I feel that the main characters kept their colors. Beautiful story.

+ZOOLOGY Actually, I can. If you look on the back of the bok it says, "The eighth story" which kind of makes it refering to ALL HP books. Which makes it the Eighth Harry Potter book.(but excludind the side stories like fantastic beasts / tales of beadle and bard

I think the people with the red books were conforming into a society that forced you to be a certain way, which would explain why everyone who was reading a red book walked in one direction. The people with the blue books were the people who were unique or were't persuaded by society, and had personalities which were represented by the little fish the girl had and the bird the boy had. The man with the red scarf could also represent society too, because it seemed like he owned the book store that was selling the red books. So, selling the red books could also be seen as selling the idea of being plain and not unique to people. He also forced the girl to read the red book. This can be seen as society forcing someone to conform.

This was beautifully done the emotions the animals the imagination the story line the scary ‘monsters’/red book people, how the red book people all walk with their head down. The way it keeps swapping between real world and imagination.

DJ_ Sparrow57 Ok first of all HARRY POTTER I IS BEST BOOK BESIDES MY FAVORITE BECAUSE LOGIC!!!!!! But I made a joke when naming two characters, they are twins who can read each other's minds (I know stereotypical) and there names are Cedric and Edward. There so close they're practically the same person.... (pro joke skills) but I made my friend cry because I was overly defending Harry Potter. I can't remember exactly but basically "I don't see how you can like kissy romantic vampires, and not like b@d@ss wizards?!?!?" I don't regret that.

My interpretation of it is that when we try to be imaginative and read, watch, or even animate things that are really imaginative and uplifting, the world around us tries to make us read, or watch things that are more angry or sad. I have had this happen with me a lot throughout the years. In school, I would read something imaginative and happy, and people would make fun and tell me not to. I don't know if that's what they meant, but it's what I thought.

It's really cute, but it's still nice to know what you're rejecting before you reject it. Popular opinion is not always wrong. It would have been nice if they read both books, compared them, and then made an educated decision.

Grim Reaper I think the books are a metaphor. Because in the description it says (more or less) that he is creative and thinks differently then others, and he is looking for someone like him. But yes without the metaphor you are correct

You: Have you tried being normal? Me: Have you tried being strange? You: I was emo in high school. Me: what's strange about that? You: ...well I, you know. I was really weird. Me: I don't believe you. You: Well have you tried being normal, yes or no? Me: Of course! Do you think it's easy being myself? I was just born with that kind of courage? No, I had to suffer for the privilege to be myself and you can go fuck your repressed self. You: O.k god, didn't think it was such a big deal. Me: Of course you didn't, it's easy for you to make assumptions about people you've never met before.

While I get the symbolism of being yourself in this, and that is a good thing, showing that anybody different from how you are, or (possibly?) attempting to be like another as something that's mindless and evil isn't such a good thing...

This is what society is like. Everyone reads a red book (the normal book) and it feels like you're the only one reading a blue book (the abnormal/weird book). Every day you're misunderstood and labeled as "different" or "the outcast". So when you eventually find someone who reads the same book as you, you desperatly want to hang onto them and never let them go because they're the only people who seem to get you and love you for being yourself. Wonderful story. :)

To me that was like how society tells you to be 'this way' and that man was fighting for those who want to be different.
