I’m seeing a lot of people in the comments say that they think they’re all actual monsters. Correct me if I’m wrong but I took the film to be a child’s take on domestic abuse and how it can make them feel: weak, scared, and gross. It also negatively warps the way a child views his or her parents. It left me feeling more sad than frightened.

Through a kids view... their broken family and she saw them all as monsters. I'm gonna say the dad was drunk and abusive and then they got into a fight and that's when the child's imagination acted up. This is very sad and scary at the same time. Amazing

Here is how I interpreted this story; The dad comes home late and is drunk, this causes an abusive fight to happen where both parents hit each other, the little girl sees them as monsters like in the stories the mother was reading to her in order to cope with what is happening, the parents notice her watching them and at this point it can go one of two ways. First is the parents are going for her to try to comfort her, the second is maybe the mother takes out her anger on the daughter as well (People tend to pick on those weaker than they are after all) but considering a toy was dropped on her in her room I would assume they where trying to comfort her. The toy was evil or "tainted" because in certain situations people may try to use gifts as a way to "make things better" (For example, if I buy my wife flowers I don't have to feel bad about staying out late) they probably just threw toys at her and called it a day since gifts are a "cure all" in some abusive relationships. The ending is the really sad part, the little girl looks in the mirror and sees her parents and herself as tainted evil monsters, people who are in abusive situations tend to grow up and be the same way, the toy tainting her can easily be seen as her also believing gifts make things better, and that its OK to act like this as long as you buy a gift and say sorry, she will most likely grow up to be just like her parents because its all she really knows. Monsters in story books aren't the true monsters, people are. Anyways, sorry for such a long comment. This animation was amazing! I really enjoyed it! >u

I know I'm late, but here is what I think is happening. *The parent were arguing and the girl came downstairs. My point of view: The mother is reading her child a scary story to keep her busy, then the father comes home drunk and when he slams the front door then the mother runs/speed walks down stairs to speak to him. The parents start to argue down stairs and the little girl hears them arguing so, she goes down stairs to see what was happening. The small child sees her parents fighting and hiting each other. Once she saw her mom fall and attack her dad she saw them as monsters. When the mom was thrown to the wall, the little girl backed away and when the mom was getting up she saw her daughter frightened so, as she got up she was quickly crawling to her daughter to calm her but to the little girl it seemed as if her mom wanted to hurt her. When the girl was going upstairs she thought her monster mom was trying to grab her foot, But for the mom she wanted to catch up to her frightened daughter and try to calm her again. Also when the little girl gets on her bed, a toy lands right next to her hand, and i think the mom wanted to trow it to her since she know shes afraid of having her and her husband close to her and she gave her the toy to calm her down and you can tell the mom gave it to her cause in the end when the girl screams the mother is holding the toy. In the ending part were the little girl sees herself covered in blood and then she looks up , she sees herself as a monster with her "monster" parents behind her, she screams and then smiles, i believe that her father was glad she was ok, same for the mom, and thats it. The monsters represents the fears that a child face, during abusive relationship of his/her parents. Reading horror story to a child signifies that the children are inherited these insecurities from their parents. That's the most terrible reality😥😥

The story should follow the child that we’re just call Femayle Young-Ling as a not-canon name because it sounds similar to female young king which is what the child is. Perhaps there would be different chapters, each one with a lesson. Wonder what the other lessons could be.

Just before I clicked it, all the memories that this short film gave me just suddenly came flooding back and idk if I wanna watch it again 💀

3:00 OH SHI- I really like the meaning of this animation and how easy it is to see. Well, I hate the meaning but I appreciate how easy it is to understand it. So from what I saw this is just how I interpret it. I apologize if it’s wrong. So here’s how I see it. The little girl is having nightmares about these monsters outside. Most likely due to what horrible things she has seen people do. At the age she is, most likely 6-8, she sees the people who scared her as monsters. As many kids do. She shows these pictures of the monsters and shows them to her mother who try’s to comfort her. But then hears something downstairs and goes to see what it was. The little girl is most likely panicked because she doesn’t know what’s going on. She hears yelling and things breaking from downstairs. And because her mother was down there and since most kids are extremely curious, she went to take a look. She then saw her parents fighting. Each scream becoming louder and more violent. One thing let to another and the girls father hits her mother. She gets terrified of her dad seeing what he had just done to her mother. She starts seeing her father as a monster. Then her mother sees her and try’s to calm her down. But the girl also sees her mother as a monster as well since she was involved in the fight. She runs upstairs in tarrier and her mother follows. She try’s her best to calm the child down giving her a toy but the girl still now only sees her parents as monsters. She refuses to take it, and ends up looking into a merrier. Seeing both of her parents upstairs with her trying to calm her down- she still only sees them as monsters. Because of this when she looks into a merrier, since she sees her parents as monsters, she starts seeing herself as one to. I Hope I got this right- the meaning could be completely different and just exactly what the animation shows, this is just how I interpret it. I had similar thoughts. I also thought when the mom was thrown at the stairs, the mom was beat up by the dad so much, that the mom looked "disfigured". The blood on her hands could have also been the mom's blood from one of the hits to the face. Great Storytelling and Art Direction for a short of this high of a caliber!

I was 8 when I first watched this and it scared me so bad. Coming back I finally know what this really means…

hey who else is here from Cory came here out of curiousity because he respects the request, and glad I did because this was FANTASTIC!

A nice, artsy little short horror film. :) I love how from when the little girl hears the first noises to the end, the whole thing is shown from her visual perspective - it gives the film a positive, VR horror film feel throughout her flight, which I guess makes it ahead of its time. I was also quite caught off-guard by the first jump-scare with the mother-monster. :) The 3D animation is beautiful - looks like a Pixar 2000s film, with the 2D wooden-story style further adding to that feel. :) Your design of the little girl is really adorable, making me really dismayed at the trauma she experiences in this story with her parents. The film has a really simple and ambiguous but effective story. I like to think the way the parents turn into monsters after the girl sees the father strike the mother means this is the first time she's caught her parents red-handed acting in this abusive way towards each-other, though it likely happened before. But with the jump-scare emphasis on loud noises before the mother catches them, perhaps the girl already fears her father's temper.

That was my worst fear as a kid. I thought my toys would come to life and attack me.

EXPLANATION: This is how kids feel if their parents are in an abusive relationship. That's why the kid was seeing them as monsters and drawing pictures of monsters because they keep hurting each other.

To those of you who are a little lost: I think the video is about domestic violence. The girl appears to be looking at her drawings on the tablet with her mother; you can even see the little girl in the drawings as well, cowering in fear of the monsters. Her mother goes to confront her abusive husband. They get in a fight and the girl sees her parents as fighting monsters, which would be any child's interpretation. Eventually her own mother starts abusing her, hence why the broken body of the mother kept coming after the little girl. The reflection in the mirror shows the little girl as a monster too because she eventually grew up to be just like her abusive parents. But that is just my take on the video. Anyways, great animation; I love it and the plot so much!

This actually made me scared.😣😣😣 I think this is supposed to be about when divorced parents are fighting and I gotta say, it pretty much is.

Horror stories in movies are scary. But real horror stories go a little more like this

I believe that this animated story symbolizes and represents one of the most horrible truths within a household, that sometimes, the parents are the monsters their kids hide in the sheets from.

I was a kid when I first watched this... it felt like "home"? Not in a good way. No kid would feel like home watching this unless there's something really wrong going on. And that's exactly the thing I felt a familiar connection with the little girl's feelings something haunting that I couldn't explain. Now I'm 16, the video doesn't scares me anymore in the way it did back then but I can still feel the pain. Family issues... it hurts. It hurts a lot.

Anyone else got traumatized by this video at a young age and came back after years so that they can check where it went wrong ???
